NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Mount Sanchez erupted back in August. We’re just now feeling the tremors.

 

According to the NY Post, the Jets’ former starting quarterback screamed at general manager John Idzik in the aftermath of the preseason game against the Giants in which he suffered what has now become known as a pretty significant shoulder injury.

 

 

We all know the original story. Sanchez was put in late in the third preseason game against the Giants — behind a mostly inexperienced offensive line — and was clobbered by former Giant Marvin Austin. Initially it was believed that Sanchez suffered just a bruise, but as the days stretched into weeks it became more and more apparent that he had done significant damage to the shoulder.

 

 

That injury opened the door to rookie Geno Smith getting the starting job in Week 1 of the regular season and the Jets have gone a surprising 3-2 since.

 

 

For his part, Sanchez has always been the model teammate with the Jets, extremely supportive and rarely, if ever, one to put his personal gripes with the coaching staff or management ahead of the best interests of the team.

 

 

However, as the Post reports it, Sanchez lost it on Idzik, screaming at him in the trainer’s room after the game, according to witnesses. The fifth-year quarterback was apparently furious that the Jets would play him that late in an otherwise meaningless game behind what amounted to players that had very little chance of actually making the team.

 

Sanchez, who led the Jets to AFC championship game appearances in 2009 and ’10 but later fell out of favor with the fans due to his penchant for turning the ball over, tried for weeks to rehab the injury in the hope of returning at some point this season. However, he eventually settled on surgery and went under the knife on Monday, effectively ending his season.

 

It’s believed Sanchez will miss four to six months and will likely be cut by the Jets in the offseason.

The team hasn’t commented on the Post report.

There was a debate at the time if Rex put Sanchez in, or if he was forced to by Idzik.  I dismissed it being Idizk because I didn't think he was that stupid to interfere with CS decisions at that level.

Those are the breaks.  Not surprised, or saying I'd do anything differently, but it goes with his MO of never taking responsibility for his actions. Ultimately it's his fault for not clearly beating out a rookie QB, it's his fault for not getting the ball out sooner and avoiding the hit and he should learn that sh*t doesn't flow up hill. I'm not trying to bash Mark too badly, as it's a tough injury, he's always said and done the right thing and seems like a decent enough guy, but it's the mark of a child when you yell at someone else for your own misfortune.

Seriously.  It was probably dumb for him to be in the game.  However, barely beating out Geno Smith at that point is what put him in that position.  But, more importantly, had he shown he could play in this league at any point, there would have been no Geno Smith on the team, nor any QB competition to be had.

Sanchez wanted to be treated like a player who had achieved the stature of a bonafide NFL starting QB when he hadn't achieved that.  The fact that he was even lit up on that play displayed his lack of awareness for a guy with 4 years of NFL experience.

I've been seeing this narrative out there that Rex and Idzik have had a subtle antagonistic relationship, and that Rex possibly inserted Sanchez into the game in order to try and make Mark look like the hero in the face of Geno's poor performance against the Giants thereby making his guy, Sanchez, look better than Idzik's guy, Geno.

 

I feel like if this story is true, it totally discredits this narrative, and Rex and Idzik might be more on the same page than any of us realize. There's all this speculation about Rex's job security going on in the media, but management hasn't given us an indication of anything. All Woody said on the matter when asked about a contract extension for Rex is that they don't conduct such business during the season, a sensible move, but not exactly telling.

Not only that, hasn't the media and fans figured out by this point that Idzik's biggest point of emphasis seems to be focusing on the present and not on the future? Its clear that this has permeated throughout every single aspect of this organization. They refuse to talk about anything past this week. Its clear in Woody's comments this week about Rex (In refusing to say whether or not he will be back next year), in Idzik's approach to Rex, and in Rex's handling of Geno (refusing to officially name him the starter for the year). I know some people don't like it, but I personally love it!

Curious timing for this story to leak.  The media-heads would not have sat on this nugget, so basically it means the team kept in under wraps until Mark got the surgery, ending his season.  Kudos to the team for that; gone are the days of anonymous tattle-telling. 

 

But what isn't sitting right with me is the fact that Mark kept wanting to get into that game.  IIRC, Mark wasn't noticeably upset until the doctor pulled him from the game.  He's a competitor, and wanted to win that game to shut everybody up.  If true, his post-game outburst can be chalked up to displaced anger.

Unless it was a cheap hit or foul (it wasnt) you shut up realizing its part of the risk you take anytime you step on the field.

Lets see........who would Chad have blamed for his 48 shoulder surgeries or Joe's knee injuries behind those awesome 70's O-lines.

Report: Sanchez irate with Idzik after shoulder injury

With Mark Sanchez finally deciding to have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, we’ve almost certainly seen the last of the quarterback in a Jets uniform.

That means time is running short for stories about the dysfunctional relationship between the team and Sanchez in the last few months of his tenure. Brian Costello of the New York Post gets one under the wire from the night that Sanchez was injured against the Giants in a preseason game.

Costello reports that Sanchez’s “emotions came out in a behind-the-scenes fit” after he was hurt in the game. Sanchez was inserted into the game with second and third string players in the fourth quarter after the Jets pulled Geno Smith. According to Costello, Sanchez screamed at General Manager John Idzik and was “furious” that the team put him into the game in that situation.

Tension has existed between the team and Sanchez since then, which presumably put the icing on the farewell cake that many expected the team would bake for Sanchez at the end of the season.

A good portion of the criticism heaped on the Jets for playing Sanchez at that moment had to do with the perception that Sanchez had become the starting quarterback by virtue of Smith’s struggles against the Giants that night. With Sanchez out, the Jets had no choice but to start the rookie. No one can know how the last five games would have turned out had Sanchez been in the lineup, but Smith has shown enough positives in those games to fully turn the page from the Sanchez era even before Sanchez officially did it by having surgery.

Matt Simms goes out there with the scrub patrol and is fine. Why must Mark get hurt trying to make that play? Why is it 100% certain that Mark would get hurt in that game? He got hurt scrambling around, throwing a ball that should have been gone many seconds earlier.

I can't believe some nobody who isn't even on the Giants anymore knocked Sanchez out of the 2013 season in preseason and ended his career here. What a way to go. What a Sanchezesque ending

I seriously wish Sanchez the best of luck. Yes, he has some major shortcomings as an NFL QB, but has always been a class act and, say whatever you want (and we have) did give us some exciting moments in his first two seasons. I'm sure he'll land as a backup somewhere, maybe even with the Patriots.

Why does Peyton Manning not take the same hit? The answer is what I am referring to. Manning never gets himself in the situation. He either throws it sooner, throws it away, or does a better job of covering up and protecting himself. Of course, Manning never butt fumbled either.

Unless those same football gods were about to unfold a story like nothing we had ever seen, Mark Sanchez would never wear a Jet uniform after this coming December 29th anyway.

Agreed.  If this story is true, then Mark is a spoiled brat who threw a hissy fit because he didn't get his way.

 

That said, nobody was named on this as being a witness.  With the media's track record, I've completely lost my trust in them to report the truth unless it comes directly from a named source. They've given us no reason to just take their word on it. So if there's no one named as a witness, then I simply don't believe it.
