Interesting read on picking a new QB

Found this on Fox Sports from Lions fans...

"There are at least two quarterbacks on benches of other teams who will end up being starters in this league, and possibly stars. It's my job to find them. And I have. Here are the guys I looked at: Matt Schaub (Atlanta), Billy Volek (Tennessee), David Garrard (Jacksonville), Philip Rivers (San Diego), Dave Ragone (Houston), Cleo Lemon (Miami), Ryan Fitzpatrick (St. Louis), and Bradlee Van Pelt (Denver). Two of these guys will be stars, and possibly more will be good starters in the league.

So now I have to weigh what it would cost to get them... a cost benefit analysis if you will. Atlanta's on record as wanting a first rounder for Schaub. I'm not giving them a first rounder, so mark him off the list. I thought Lemon could be had cheap when he played for San Diego, but I imagine Saban saw the same thing I did in him, and I don't think he would come so cheap. He has a price, but not one I'd be willing to pay. Volek, since he's got so much experience could be expensive, but of all the guys on the list, he's my least favorite. He puts up good numbers, but he doesn't win. I have a problem with that, so I'd probably pass. Garrard is similar, but he wins more. It's not pretty, but I think he could be a decent QB in the league. Ragone, Fitzpatrick and Van Pelt would be the cheapest, but also have the highest risk. Ragone was a stud in NFL Europe, and that's a decent indicator of success. Fitzpatrick has looked good in relief of Bulger, but his price may be going up. We know he's smart, but is he a leader? Van Pelt is the opposite, we know he's a leader, but does he have the skills? All that being said, I'd take a leader over someone with the skills any day of the week (and I know, I know, that's what they said about Garcia, but for awhile it worked... and Van Pelt's got a much more powerful arm, he's just as good an athlete... his accuracy is the only question, and it would definitely have to be analyzed before pulling the trigger on any deals).

So that brings us to Rivers. He would certainly cost a lot, but he's also my favorite on the list. He's had some seasoning sitting behind a great QB, in an offense similar to what Detroit should be running, and in college, he carried his team. That's the kind of QB I'm looking for. I would offer San Diego a third for him, which of course would be shot down, but I'd be willing to give up a second rounder (and maybe I could entice them with Charles Rogers also... their WR crew is getting up in age and has no deep threat... and Rogers isn't going to do anything for us). If they demand a first rounder (and they might, considering there will surely be plenty of bidders for his services) I'd have to wait and see what happens. Seems steep to me, but I'd certainly be tempted.

So all things considered, here's how I would rank the options (also, no matter what the option, I would bring in a veteran to compete... sort of a worst case scenario offering, just in case of injury or bad judgment, which I highly doubt... someone like Brad Johnson, or Jon Kitna, or Chris Weinke, or Trent Dilfer): 1) Philip Rivers, 2) Dave Ragone, 3) Bradlee Van Pelt, 4) Cleo Lemon, 5) David Garrard, 6) Matt Schaub, 7) Ryan Fitzpatrick, 8) Billy Volek, 9) Draft a Rookie."

SJ Thanks

Ragone is an interesting name no one has really mentioned before-

R44 can give you lots more about him than I can

What I do know is that in NFL Europe he was really good and sitting behind David Carr has no future there if they continue with Carr

JMO the chargers will keep Rivers and get rid of brees (and maybe Marty Schott too while they are at it) -

Good read thanks

bit, i agree 100%,,,,,,

i have felt from day one that if Chargers didnt make playoffs this year it would make it easier for them to dump Brees (which they originally wanted to, but Rivers holdout forced Brees to play and have great year),, AND to say 'see SD fans, this is why we drafted Rivers, he is our strter now'..helps front office save face...

question is,, would u take Brees for a 1st rounder or Abe?

Abe yes, 1st rounder no.

Maybe a first next year.

You need to get more value for a top 3 pick than just Brees, if you are going to trade it.

The nice aspect of the deal is that both players would need to be franchised, and teh new clubs could work out deals that are beneficial to their cap situation.

ya agree,, would let a 2007 1st rounder go in a heartbeat though

I have a hard time thinking that SD would get rid of Brees.. he is a proven commodity and has great chemistry with Gates, McCardell and LT. Why give up the known for the unknown. Get what you can for Rivers and move on.

u forget that the stubborn GM drafted Rivers,, the same one who blew playoffs by sittin Gates vs Dallas..
