GreenBeans
With Edwards having two years left on his contract, with the Jets clearly in a major rebuilding mode on offense in 2006 and with a number of NFL jobs likely opening shortly after the season, there will be continued speculation about Edwards. Jets owner Woody Johnson, who by all accounts likes Edwards as the face of the franchise, can put a quick end to it all by extending Edwards' contract by two years to show more solidarity. If he doesn't, Johnson, who doesn't speak to the media, risks watching a team like the Chiefs coming after Edwards with a more attractive financial and long-term offer, asking the Jets permission to speak to Edwards with a draft-pick compensation offer. EXTEND EDWARDS CONTRACT??? http://www.nypost.com/sports/jets/59678.htm
mudcat21
Go eat another donut Fat Boy. If Woody Erection extends Hermie's contract after a 3-13 season, the guy is a bigger moron than Edwards and Cannizaro combined.
LionelRichie
i really thought tagliabue put an end to the whole draft pick for coaches transaction after the gruden deal. how can cannizaro not know these things?
mudcat21
The Daily News also states we'd get draft picks for Hermie. I'll volunteer to drive Hermie to the airport right after the game Sunday with a one way ticket to KC. There will several head-coaching vacancies next week. Unless Edwards is fired - and that appears unlikely - he's not allowed to speak with other teams unless granted permission by the Jets. They would be entitled to compensation in the form of a draft pick (or picks), which could be a stumbling block for the Chiefs.

Bugg
Thing is, all the "cannot trade picks for a coach" stuff goes by the boards if one team claims and wins a tampering claim. As per PFT, Peterson was in NYC the night before the Chiefs played the Jints, and adamantly denied meeting with Edwards, claiming he was already in Miami, when in fact the Jets didn't leave until Saturday and he could've easily met Hermie that Friday night. Question is, is Johnson aware of all this, or is he still buying Edwards' BS? Canizzaro must take crack in his coffee to keep up this "extend Hermie!" nonsense. Creating speculation out of snippets of media reports through "sources" is silly. This is a cat and mouse game of poker at its highest level. As fans, all you can really do is let itself play out, because you are not going to get a real accounting of what is going on. Same as the Belichick deal. Seriously, how many times in the history of NY sports has a coach of a 3-13 (most likely) team had a reporter push for a contract extension? Preston Howley III
Seriously, how many times in the history of NY sports has a coach of a 3-13 (most likely) team had a reporter push for a contract extension? Herm's first extension came after a 6-10 season, and that was good for two years. I figure a 3 or 4 win season has to be good for at least 4 more years. In Woody's alternative universe, anyway. BaumerJet
Vermeil speaks up for Edwards Thursday, December 29, 2005 BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The Herman Edwards-to-Kansas City buzz has started again, with Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil saying Edwards should be Coach of the Year for the job he has done holding the Jets together and keeping them competitive in the face of an avalanche of injuries. Vermeil is extremely close to Edwards and his comment isn't surprising, but it indicates how highly the Chiefs organization thinks of Edwards. Should Vermeil retire after this season, the Chiefs will likely ask the Jets permission to speak to Edwards at the very least. "If somebody offers something crazy, Herm would listen," said someone close to Edwards yesterday. Edwards, who has two years remaining on his contract, has said repeatedly that he plans to stay with the Jets, and owner Woody Johnson made it clear he wants Edwards to stay. But the person said Edwards could be lured away with a mind-boggling financial package that would set him up for life. Edwards is currently among the league's lowest-paid coaches at about $1.3 million per season. And it is due to that fact that I still do not believe that Woody Johnson will let him out of his contract. He (Woody)is just too cheap, even if it HELPS the TEAM! NorthCoastJetsFan
Not to defend Herm or Canizzaro here, but I think you'll see that it's a common practice in the NFL to extend coaches' contracts in the last year so they are not lame duck coaches. Many times, the coach sees none of that money, as they are fired and it's not guaranteed. It's more of a tool to ensure the players don't blow off the coach during the season. I believe Edwards has 2 years left after this year. yes, teh money IS guaranteed, so if you extend someone, then fire them you are still owed to pay them teh balance of the contract

MiamiJet
Insanity. After five years, and some results, Cannizarro suggests that Woody should extend Herm, since 2006 is a rebuilding year? If that is his logic, what has Herm, or this regime, done to deserve an extension? Why should Herm and Terry be trusted with rebuilding this franchise? This, in my opinion, is faulty logic. If the thought is to prevent Herm from being a lame duck coach, he need not be extended another two years. He doesn't deserve it. If I were Woody, I'd have to think that Herm could rebound from this injury plagued season. If I don't believe he can, or he proves me wrong, fire his ass after next seaosn and go in another direction. This is bullsh*t. Herm has two years left on his deal. If this team cannot rebound and make the playoffs, while retooling, then it makes no sense to give this man another 3 years to rebuild. Woody should seriously consider looking at a GM that has a track record of excellent drafts or extensive scouting. Let the new GM handpick his coach, and wipe this thing clean. I'm all for giving Herm a mulligan, but enough. No extensions. He came here, and made the decision to try and win with Parcell's leftovers, but also mixed in his own players. I do not want to excuse mediocrity. Bradway and Herm were a work in progress, and now this team is facing a complete overhaul, while we sit and hope they've learned enough on the job to be able to complete the job.
