Jetfan13 Posted December 30, 2013 Share Posted December 30, 2013 Mike Shanahan and his staff have been fired in Washington according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Leslie Frazier out as Vikings head coach After a season of promise dissolved in blown fourth-quarter leads and curious quarterback decisions, the Vikings fired coach Leslie Frazier on Monday, Chip Scoggins and Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Frazier, who has a year left on his contract, was 21-33-1 after taking over for Brad Childress with six games left in the 2010 season. The team weathered adversity that included the collapse of the Metrodome roof late that season, and Frazier was named permanent coach following it. The Vikings were 3-13 in 2011, but made the playoffs at 10-6 last season. Rather than extend Frazier’s contract, the team picked up an option for 2014, making this season make-or-break. The Vikings finished 5-10-1, losing four games despite leads late in the fourth quarter, and tying another under the same circumstances. Quarterback Christian Ponder was ineffective and eventually benched, and the team’s defense came within four points of setting a Vikings record for most points allowed in a season. Frazier, 54, was the defensive coordinator before succeeding Childress, and the team’s poor defensive play this season was a continual cause of frustration. Frazier’s hand-picked coordinators, Bill Musgrave on offense and Alan Williams on defense, struggled at times to match their schemes with personnel and left themselves vulnerable to second-guessing over their play calls, even inside their own locker room. After Sunday’s season-ending 14-13 victory over the Detroit Lions at the Metrodome, a win that left the Vikings with the NFL’s eight-worst record, Frazier hugged his players as they walked back into the locker room; most seemed to accept that the coach’s dismissal was inevitable. After the game, Frazier said he would face any decisions with peace. “I just have a lot of belief in my abilities as a coach and have a lot of belief in the guys on our team, a lot of belief in our staff. For that reason, you don’t have to walk in fear. You just know that things are going to work out.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Browns announce Chudzinski firing The Browns announced Sunday night they have relieved head coach Rob Chudzinski of his duties. The organization issued the following statement: "We appreciate Chud's passion for the Browns, and we have great respect for him both personally and professionally. We needed to see progress with this football team. We needed to see development and improvement as the season evolved and, unfortunately, we took a concerning step backward in the second half of the year. "Our fans deserve to see a consistently competitive team. We have high standards, and there's an urgency for success. When we believed we were not positioned to achieve significant progress in 2014, we knew we had to admit that a change was needed, and move forward. "Browns fans are the most loyal and passionate supporters in the NFL. We're fully committed to bringing them the winning football team they deserve." Jettington Posted December 30, 2013 Share Posted December 30, 2013 Like I said in another thread about how constant turnover isn't good for a team, the Browns firing Chudzinski after what amounts to less than a full calendar year is a joke, and one of the reasons the Browns occupy the basement of the AFC north on a regular basis. The Browns actually looked pretty good with Brian Hoyer at QB earlier in the year, but once he went down, they just couldn't get back on track. So now you have what essentially amounts to a wasted year for Cleveland, and honestly, what coach will want to go there If they set the precedent that you can be fired after one season? Who wants to settle their families down in Cleveland knowing they might get fired a season later? There are plenty of assistant coaches and retread HC's that will take any HC job offered to them. The Browns hired Chud on the thought that he'd be able to develop an offense there. They were one of the worst offensive teams in the league, so he was fired. It's the life of a coach in the NFL, NBA, and NCAA - you never know where you will be next year, no matter what you have done in the past. No such thing as job security, especially in the coaching world...Hell, there were plenty of people speculating Coughlin would be give the Axe when the Giants were 0-6 and the guy won 2 SB's the last 6 years or so. His dumb idea to make a defense that was custom built for the 4-3 play 3-4 (and not make the player changes to implement a 3-4)? They have a couple first round picks this year, a decent defense on paper, some talent on the OL and at WR. I could think of worse landing spots.
