NFL | Chicago mayor would like second NFL team

Fri, 30 Dec 2005 21:15:42 -0800

The Associated Press reports Chicago mayor Richard Daley believes getting a second NFL team would increase the city's chances of winning an Olympics bid for 2016. Daley claims a second team would make it more feasible to build an 80,000 capacity dome. Daley said, "This is a great city, a great sports town. If it can handle two baseball teams, it can easily handle two football teams." Daley has not yet approached the NFL about gaining a second franchise.

I read somewhere that in the 1970's the NFL paid a company to decide expansion plans based on profitability. They came up with Chicago and Long Island -- a 3rd NY area team.

NFL, scrapped the report/study, after paying a ton for it.....

They went with Tampa Bay and Seattle as expansion teams.

No need for a second team in Chicago. They would be 2nd class citizens worse than White Sox are.

I would go more into detail, but I have disdain for most politicians, as the folks at JI political board can attest to :x

never really think about how we have 2 baseball, 2 football, (2) basketball, and (2) hockey teams.

we are spoiled.

of course for some reason i had to root for the Jets, Mets, and Knicks. At least i got to see the rangers win a stanley cup... when i was 9.

The Islanders don't count as a hockey team?

chicago's not in the same league as NY or LA in terms of TV homes, which is all that matters to the NFL. NY (7.3MM) is in a class all it's own, w/ a comanding lead over LA (5.3MM), LA is also in it's own class with a commanding lead over CHI (3.4MM). CHI is not that far ahead of PHI (2.8MM), SF (2.4MM), BOS (2.4MM), DAL (2.2MM), DC (2.2MM), ATL (2MM), DET (1.9MM)... that's the rest of the top 10.

How is the 4th largest population base in the United States not in the top 10 of TV markets?

What the hell, don't they count 13-inch B&W TV's with coat hanger antenneas?

Those numbers aren't right. Detroit has a population of less than 900,000 in Detroit proper. If they count the tri-county area, then that might be more accurate.
