Revis on the block?

Recommended Posts

Teams are exploring dealing for Bucs corner Darrelle Revis, according to league sources, with some believing there is a good chance he will be dealt by the start of the league year.

During the combine, sources from several teams began reaching out to the Bucs about the possibility they might deal corner Darrelle Revis, and rival executives believe a deal could be possible.

At this stage no one is making offers, and the Bucs haven't contacted other teams about the Pro Bowl player, and are not shopping him, but talks could certainly progress as we approach the start of the league year next month. Revis makes $16 million this season and counts $16M against the cap (that holds true for every season through 2018), and Tampa has several other tricky contracts to sort through, particularly along the offensive line with an aging and highly paid group, many of whom are nearing the ends of their contracts.

This is the first year of Tampa's new regime with general manager Jason Licht and coach Lovie Smith. They did not acquire Revis and Revis may not the best fit in their new defense, with more Cover-2 principles. Smith has talked about retaining Revis publicly, but as the free agency period begins, teams are seemingly more convinced he could be had via trade. Hence the calls of inquiry.

Revis got no guaranteed money, so he could be traded or released without cap or cash ramifications (no cap acceleration) and thus Tampa could conceivably get assets in return for him, and then use his cap and cash savings to address several other positions. A sampling of general managers during the combine asked what they thought Revis would earn per season on the open market, put him in the $8M-$9M million range given his ACL injury from 2012 and what has transpired in the corner market in recent years. They figured Revis might earn in the range of the Titans' Alterraun Verner, the top free agent corner, might get on the open market. Verner is younger.

Would all of that be enough to convince Licht and Smith to part with him? And how much could Tampa actually get in return for him?

League sources anticipate the degree of conversations to intensify as March 11 approaches. Revis had a strong return from his surgery and played at a Pro Bowl level last season, and his agents, Neil Schwartz and Jon Feinsod did a tremendous job in getting him $16M/season, or roughly $6M more per year than any other corner in the game. But with Revis turning 29 in July, there is a growing sense among general managers that Tampa could end up moving Revis in the coming weeks if there is sufficient interest.

La Confora gets paid to be wrong, but interesting nonetheless.

Sooo, $50 it is?

Hell yes Revis and Milliner at CB.

I'm off the Revis train. go somewhere else.

If they trade him, we still get their third rounder, right?

Looking it up and came across this gem:

The inevitable and the obvious finally happened Sunday, as the Jets traded Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's a stunning deal because it involves one of the top players in the NFL, albeit one coming off an ACL injury. But it's even more stunning because of how badly it appears the Bucs fleeced the Jets.

Does the pending third become a fourth if Revis is traded? If so, Idzik screwed up.

The language I saw said "on Tampa's roster the 3rd day of the league year"  That was from an article or two.  That would give Tampa until March 14 to move him.  With the draft set for May 8, they would have to really be shopping him to get rid of him that far before the draft.

1. Revis was so obsessed with the $/year figure he got no guaranteed money. Can you imagine if he reinjured the knee last season? Wow. Took guts but stupid nonetheless.

2. Would be funny if the Bucs went to him and said "pay cut or get packing" (preferably to the Browns or Jags). That would be some small measure of justice.

At $9MM, take him back, cut Cro and either resign him cheaper or move on.  Either way, that's a nice pipe-dream.  Don't see it happening but who knows.

Revis and a hopefully much improved Milliner, Wilson in the slot, send Cro packing for good. Then if Byrd is not franchised grab him and instantly have the top Defense in the NFL and use all your draft picks on Offense with still a decent amount of Money to spend on the OL and WR in FA and we would be in pretty good shape moving forward.

Lets face it Rex Likes his defensive backs and having a dominant Secondary allows him to get creative at the LOS something hes had to back off of the last few years since the numbers seem to Show Rex backing off the blitz more and more each year

Revis Byrd Allen Reed Milliner Wilson would be pretty formidable a group IMO and should leave plenty of FA money to spend on the offense along with a nice amount of draft picks.

It would only be any measure of justice if Revis cared about winning.  If he gets dealt, he gets his money, and he's happy.  He said it himself.

No, Revis needs to be on the Bucs roster on March 13th for the Jets to obtain their third round pick (#69) if he is cut or traded before that date the Jets get the Bucs fourth.

Stumbling block will be getting Revis to agree to restructuring his deal, trading dollars for guarantees. In other words, he's going to have to take $9 mil per, but get back a long-term deal instead (which isn't happening). If Licht wants to dump Revis, they're going to have to cut him.

Cant see another team picking up that contract. Could be wrong but thg only way i see him getting traded is if he takes s pay cut first unless there is a team that is willing to bssicslly do a one year rental at 16M. Otherwise he might be @gasp@ cut. Could happen with zero desd money implications.

I'm trying to think if TB would be willing to admit they got hosed on the Revis deal.

If they trade him, they basically got A $16 mil rental that cost them the #13 pick and pick # 101

If they keep him, he gets #16 mil and they give away the #69 pick

If they try to cut him and re-sign him, he may take a $16 mil, or less, 1 yr. contract from a team like Denver or NE to get that elusive SB Ring, & TB still gives up pick # 101

They are screwed no matter what they do! :bwahaharoll:

When Bucs started imploding and Schiano looked to be fired coupled with Revis 1 year deal, it was pretty obvious he was gonna be a 1 year rental in tampa. New coach/gm, 3 year rebuild mode, aand makes zero sense to keep him. He may get cut and rejoin Jets if no team willing to take his yearly 16M contract on via trade route.

I agree. Also, I can't see any team giving up much for Revis via trade at this point. To put this in perspective, the Bucs could cut Revis and have enough money to sign two Verner's. lol 16 million on the open market can buy you a lot.

While the new regime certainly frees Tampa up to flat out release Revis if that's what they want to do, there's just no way I can see him coming back to the Jets. Just don't think Woody or Idzik want that kind of headache around.

But it would be funny if he'd re-sign for $10M.

Jets get him off the books in 2013, when we were going nowhere anyway, to have a clean slate in 2014.

Jets get Sheldon Richardson.

Jets get Revis back a year later.

As much as that douche has pissed me off in the past, that would be pretty freakin' awesome.  You know, just as long as that new contract contains a "if you hold out you forfeit all future guarantees and the remainder of your deal is reduced to the vet minimum" clause.
