Bleedin Green
Meh, rumors were that the number for a kicker was going to be under $3 million (not sure if official numbers ever came out). That's a good bit less than the crazy contracts that have been getting handed out at the position this offseason, so if the Jets weren't going to use it on Howard, then why not? JetNation
The New York Jets have placed the franchise tag on kicker Nick Folk according to their official twitter account: We have placed the franchise tag on K Nick Folk- http://t.co/NjZXMBttja pic.twitter.com/wJr6E7YgOI — New York Jets (@nyjets) February 28, 2014 View the full article
Bleedin Green
Seriously? Couldn't work out a deal with him? Terrible. Can't blame them if they didn't plan on using the tag on anyone else. Gould got $4 mil / year, Gano got over $3 mil / year. The tag was probably a cheaper option than a long-term deal. Plus, this way we still get to keep on using the same jokes about how Folkin' great it is every time he hits a game winner!!!
joewillie78
Well, HE's stoked. Being the face of our franchise and all. The NFL needs to pass a rule that the Franchise Tags have to be used on football players.

Stonehands
This is a non-story. Just keeps him from being a free agent. He will either sign a longer cheaper deal or be cut at some point. Cap space right now is not an issue.
BroadwayJoe12
You assign a franchise tag so as you can try to hammer out a long-term deal, step off the ledge.
denden29
The team and Folk have until July 15 to work out a long term deal. This Tag just prevents him from hitting the open market and gives the Jets some leverage in negotiations.

This Tag just prevents him from hitting the open market and gives the Jets some leverage in negotiations. I think it's probably likely they won't come to an agreement. Folk had a great year, and probably looking for the crazy money other kickers got this year. The tag allows the jets to not have to offer that big contract based on this past season. Let's see him start off and go through a majority of this coming year and see if he is worth that big money.

stoicsentry
So he might make 2 or 3 million this year. So what? Folks, we have plenty of cash to spend. I'm not going to complain about a very good kicker receiving 2-3m. Folks!

bitonti
Folk was 91% last year the problem is he's not 91% every year. This is a fair compromise between a mega deal and letting him walk. The Jets won 8 games last year somehow and a huge part of it was Nick Folk. I'm glad he's here for another year. Finding another PK, that good, isn't easy. Sperm Edwards
How on earth would someone complain about this? Who else were we going to use the tag on anyway? We get to keep him for another year at least, and it's supposedly over a million less than the nutty money kickers were getting recently. Plus it gives us extra time to work something out long-term (if a deal can be struck). Smart move.

I agree but the term 'FRANCHISE TAG" and the term "KICKER" seem to go together like " COORS LIGHT" and "BEER".

That's sad.
