2014 New York Jets Mock Draft V. 2.2 "Post-Combine Mock"

I'll probably do a couple more mocks one once we're well into FA, and then one more a couple days before the draft. I know I'd be extremely happy if this is how the draft shakes out.

1) Kony Ealy - DE/OLB - Missouri

2) Austin Seferian-Jenkins - TE - Washington

3a) Jarvis Landry - WR - LSU

3b) Robert Herron - WR - Wyoming

4) De'Anthony Thomas - RB - Oregon

5a) Dakota Dozier - OG - Furman

5b) Brett Smith - QB - Wyoming

6a) Michael Sam - DE - Missouri

6b) Colt Lyerla - TE - Oregon

6c) Walt Aikens - CB - Liberty

6d) Tre' Boston - FS - North Carolina

7) Storm Johnson - RB - UCF

1 - As far as Ealy goes, his stock has taken a huge rise since the combine. Some projections have him going as high as 15 to the Steelers, others at 20 to the Cardinals and 24 to the Bengals. I think he's a similar prospect to Richardson, kind of a cross between Richardson and Coples if you had to compare him to Jets players. He'd fit as a OLB/DE hybrid. Imagine if we had 3 DE/OLB/DT's from Missouri, I  think that'd make for some good chemisty and they're all beastly players. I'll post the description I have for Ealy in my other thread:

"Richardson: 294 lbs, 6'3, 40yd: 5.02, bench: 30 reps, vert: 30in - Ealy: 273 lbs, 6'4, 40yd: 4.92, bench: 22 reps vert: 31in

Pretty close to identical stats, but the one thing Ealy beat every other d lineman in was the 3 cone drill with a 6.83. The only defensive players other than corners and safeties to have a better cone time than Ealy were 2 linebackers. He can move in space and could also play OLB for us as a hybrid.

He's a lot like the former Missouri player in Richardson; with similar intangibles. They've both played together as well. This kid is a hell of a prospect, and with Evans, Lee, and Ebron off the board I wouldn't mind us going D with the first pick. Again, I'm also assuming that we will pick up at least one big WR in FA. Ealy had 9.5 sacks, 14.5 TFL, a FF, and 6 PDs. He is also very versatile, and can play coverage."

2 - ASJ's stock has also risen recently and now getting him at 49 might be a bit of a stretch; although I could see it happening because after Seattle at 32 there aren't a whole lot of teams in need of a TE. ASJ will also miss his Pro Day and undergo a fairly mild surgery in his foot for a stress fracture, which will almost definitely decrease his stock a bit further down the road. If not ASJ though, Troy Niklas would be a nice alternative. Either way, we need both a TE and WR in at least 2 of the 4 picks we have in the top 3... if not more.

3a - Landry isn't as explosive as Odell Beckham Jr is, the other WR out of LSU, but he is a high value pick for a 3rd rounder. Landry got almost 1,200 yards receiving and 10 TDs his Junior year.

3b - Robert Herron of Wyoming, I've seen this kid play first-hand and his stats don't do his play-making ability justice. Herron has sure hands, and good burst off the line. I think he's well worth a 3rd rounder. If we pick up a top-tier WR in free agency like a Hakeem Nicks, or a Emmanuel Sanders and combine them with Landry, Herron, ASJ, and JK that's a pretty solid lineup.

4 - De'Anthony Thomas is one of the best pass-catching RBs in the draft, if not the best. his rushing stats are: rookie - 595 yds 7 tds, sophomore - 701 yds 11 tds, junior - 594 yds 8 tds; receiving stats: rookie - 609 yds 9 tds, sophomore - 445 yds 5 tds, 246 yds 1 td. that's 1,200 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns his rookie year. This guy could be just what the Jets need to have the perfect backfield

5a - Dozier would also be a value pick at 5 as well, he is a big mauler and probably one of the best potential run-blocking guards in the class. The Jets will be in need of a good run blocking guard too with Willie Colon probably on his way out.

5b - I've also seen Brett Smith play first-hand, and I'll be the first to tell you he's better than most of the QBs that received combine invites this year. 3375 yards 29 TDs passing, 573 yards and 4 TDs rushing his senior year. Smith also had 710 yards and 10 TDs rushing his rookie year. In interviews he attributes the drop off in rushing yards to a new coach and coaching style. The Jets would be lucky to grab him in the 5th round.

6a - Michael Sam... Yup. Well, I'd like to get Sam because despite the fact he's gay and has attracted a ton of attention he is actually a decent, and productive football player. If we had 3 guys from Missouri who all played together and are all on the same D front, that'd be something. It'd only add to our already solid D-line. Many scouts and mocks have Sam dropping and possibly being undrafted  because of a poor combine performance, as well as the media attention he will bring for coming out. I think if we could grab him at a 6th rounder that would be a safe investment.

6b - A lot of people on these forums are high on Colt Lyerla, but he hasn't gained a ton of national attention. I think his stock will continue to rise, but not much. I think he could get up to 5th, possibly 4th round. I'd say a 6th rounder is a safe bet though. He'd be good depth behind ASJ and Cumberland.

6c - With Cromartie either being cut or coming back on a cheaper deal we will be on the hunt for some new secondary blood. I think Cromartie will be gone next year, and we will sign a FA CB. I personally like Munnerlyn, and I think Walt Aikens out of Liberty would be a good complementary back who could play some nickel and switch of with Kyle Wilson who probably won't be around too much longer. Aikens had 3 INTs his senior year, and 7 in his career.

6d - Boston has a 6th-7th round grade, and I think could turn out to be another Antonio Allen except better. Allen was a 7th round pick by the Jets in 2012. He would add some depth to our safety position at low cost.

- Storm Johnson would be a good addition to our backfield; think of the options we'll have in training camp if Goodson is ready to go. Ivory, Powell, Goodson, Thomas, and Johnson. Idzik preaches competition, well that'd be a hell of a competition for the 3-4 RB spots on the roster.

In my opinion this would be a fairly ideal draft situation... I'd be quite happy if this is how our draft class ended up after May 10th. Let me know what you guys think, also be sure to check out my top 32 1st round mock.

I'm not sure how Ealy's stock is rising after a some pretty subpar combine numbers. Especially as a 34 OLB.

He's neither overly explosive or fast (in shorts) and as far as production, he was outmatched by his teammate, Sam. He'd be one of my least favorite picks for the Jets in the first. Jmo. Not saying he can't play in the NFL, just don't think he's an elite prospect, especially as a 34OLB.

Fwiw, I don't see the burst on tape either, he's weak in pursuit and I didn't really see him use his hands one on one.

Against Florida, his one big play (strip sack) was an overload blitz where he was unblocked.

He went on a small, little spree in the Cotton Bowl which was against OSU's back up LT. First sack was an inside stunt, unblocked. Second he beats him outside on a 3rd and long. But the rest of the game he was really/sorta non existent.

When you watch Missouri and pay attention to Ealy, you basically miss all the plays Sam is making.  Ealy looks like he can play in the NFL but he doesn't look like a major difference maker you take in the first round. JMO, I realize I'm somewhat in the minority.

Read the comparison I have to Richardson, as a DE he had pretty good numbers. Take a look at these videos below; the first are highlights in general but the second compares him to Aldon Smith and shows why he'd be a good fit at either DE or OLB. The first play is the overload blitz, but there are other plays where he forces his way up field to get sacks and tfls. It also shows him tipping passes in space to get ints. He might not be ridiculously fast, but he's more than quick enough to be a high caliber player as a OLB/DE hybrid. Take a quick look... together both videos are under 5 min:
