Who Goes Where ?
The Ideal New York Jets Offseason (Part One)

Tagged: Dalbin Osorio, Free Agency, New York Jets, NFL, offseason

NFL Free Agency, or Christmas as it’s known around the TOJ office, begins March 11th, 2014 at 4:00 PM. We’ve been chronicling the available free agents that the Jets could potentially target all off-season long so far (we only have Safeties left), but now it’s time to focus on the actual holes that the Jets will have to fill. I’ll be outlining the current 53 man roster (including players on IR) with predictions on whether they will be wearing Green and White next season and, if not, where they will end up. If I note that they will be released or traded, the cap savings will be written at in parenthesis (all cap numbers are from Spotrac.com). The second part of this two part series will deal with how I would ideally fill the holes the Jets will need to fill, very similarly to this amazing piece done by Cole Patterson. As always, your comments will be appreciated.

Just a few updates, as we have no real FA thread. (All per rotoworld.com)

Steelers assigned the transition tag to OLB Jason Worilds.
Essentially extinct since the league made it fully guaranteed, the transition tag has now been used twice in one afternoon. It's a one-year, $9.754 million tender. It functions similarly to the lowest restricted free agent tender, giving the Steelers the right of first refusal on any offer sheet Worilds signs on the open market. If Worilds signs elsewhere and the Steelers decide not to match, they receive no compensation. The Steelers are saving $1.7 million by not using the franchise tag. Stilly only 26, Worilds was expected to generate major interest if he reached the open market, and that will still be the case. It's possible the cap-strapped Steelers will be forced with an offer they can't match. Eight of Worilds' 18 career sacks came in 2013.

Titans re-signed SS Bernard Pollard to a multi-year contract.
Pollard broke the news on his Twitter account. Aside from the fact that it's a multi-year deal, terms are unavailable. One of the league's hardest hitters, Pollard is coming off a typical season, racking up 99 tackles, three interceptions and 0.5 sacks. Pollard isn't much of a center fielder, but sets the tone against the run. The Titans liked the "edge" he provided in 2013. Pollard turns 30 in December. He's been with four teams in his eight-year career.

The Ravens didn't use the franchise tag on free agent LT Eugene Monroe by Monday afternoon's deadline.
It means Monroe is now free to hit a market that could also include Jared Veldheer and Branden Albert. Although there's more high-end tackle talent available than usual, there's also more league-wide cap space, as well as plenty of teams who need to upgrade on the blindside. All three players are in commanding negotiating positions. Monroe is Rotoworld's No. 1 ranked free-agent tackle.

The Packers didn't use the franchise tag on CB Sam Shields or DT B.J. Raji before Monday afternoon's deadline.
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports the Packers have made little progress in long-term talks with either player. The Pack have been talking with Shields' agent since January, but the sides are reportedly more than $1 million apart annually. Shields is fully expected to reach the open market.

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans "aren't close" to a deal with free agent Alterraun Verner.
The Titans failed to apply the franchise tag by Monday's deadline, meaning there's now nothing standing between Verner and the open market. Still only 25, Verner is one of the top two corners available after Brent Grimes re-signed with the Dolphins. He's going to get a fat contract.

Free agent Aqib Talib wasn't franchise tagged by Monday's deadline.
Talib wasn't tagged last year before ultimately returning to the Patriots on a one-year deal just a few days into free agency. There's reportedly mutual interest in a new deal. The sides have until Saturday to exclusively negotiate. Free agency begins March 11.

Maybe we should bring back Tannenbaum for a guest poison pill contract. Worilds is a guy I'm definitely hoping the Jets go after.

Agreed. Him and Verner are two guys who I would like the Jets to go after.  Both are in their mid 20s and should be in their prime for the majority or entirety of the contract, in addition to they probably won't require top 5 type money, even if Verner graded out as a top 5ish talent.

If I had my wish list it would probably be something like: Sanders, Verner, Worilds and Nicks.  Talent wise, Byrd is definitely up there, but I'm just not sure I would want to spend $8+ million per on a safety, not positive the return is there.

Not that I don't like Worldis and Verner, it's just I don't see CB and OLB being as big a need as some others here.

We already have Milliner, Wilson, and most likely Cro. And if u add a playmaking safety like Byrd, you have a dynamic secondary. Instead of adding another good CB and having mediocre Safeties.

At OLB we already have Coples, McIntyre, most likely Pace and Barnes. We have potential pro bowlers at 6 of our front 7, do we really need a 7th.

I say go get Byrd, one of the WR, Sanders, J. Jones, Nicks, and Pettigrew and call it a day.

Now, this is the type of deal I could get behind, but then again, I imagine so could the other half-dozen WR-needy teams in the league.

The Denver Post expects free agent Eric Decker to command $8-$9 million annually.
It's a realistic number. The Post cites the annual average salaries of Dwayne Bowe ($11.2M), Greg Jennings ($9M) and Mike Williams ($7.2M), and the NFL's salary cap is increasing by $10 million. So even if Decker's 172/2352/24 line over the last two seasons has been inflated by Peyton Manning, he's still going to get paid. The Broncos are not expected to pony up the cash as they look to 2015, when Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas need to get locked up. Source: Denver Post Mar 5 - 9:30 AM
