In addition to the news about the Jets and Jeff Cumberland in “serious negotiations” the Jets, it seems that the Jets might also have some interest in Jermichael Finley, by many the top tight end free agent in this year’s group.

The Jets interest in Finley is in no way at odds with any desire to bring back Jeff Cumberland.  Cumby has established himself as a good second option, but there is a gap if they want more production out of him.

Finley had a neck injury that will keep teams from investing much into him and it has recently been reported that the former Packer is “close” to getting his medical clearances.  While some teams might be squeamish, the Jets experience with Kellen Winslow Jr. might make them bolder than most.  Finley is by far the best player in a mediocre class of free agent tight ends, so would be worth a serious run thanks to the Jets more than generous cap space.

Either way, both moves don’t preclude them from still drafting a long-term solution in the mid rounds.  Cumberland and Finley can provide value here and now while a mid-round draftee will take a little time in acclimating to the NFL game.

I thought Finley's injury was career threatening.

Go get Pettigrew.

Petigrew sucks.  Draft a TE - there are a number of goodies in the draft.

C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa  6'5 265  round 4 or 5    Fiedorowicz had 30 receptions for 299 yards and six touchdowns in 2013. He did a solid job as a blocker for the Hawkeyes, and has more speed and athleticism than one would think. Fiedorowicz turned in a solid performance at the Senior Bowl and showed off more athleticism than one would think at the Combine.

Iowa had a down 2012 season, but Fiedorowicz was one of the bright spots. He hauled in 45 receptions for 433 yards and a touchdown. Fiedorowicz did a solid job as a blocker for the Hawkeyes. He had 16 catches for 167 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore. Fiedorowicz was used exclusively as a blocker during his freshman season in 2010.

Fiedorowicz definitely has the size and strength to be a good blocker in the NFL. He has the receiving ability to contribute for the passing game.

Pettigrew is already a good blocker in the NFL, as well as a viable threat in the passing game.  Really not sure at all how he sucks.  I actually like CJ as well, reminds me of a poor man's version of Heath Miller, but that doesn't take away from the caliber of player Pettigrew is.

Gil Brandt stated on the NFL Network that Pettigrew would not be a good option for the Jets......so maybe you're right.

Whether it's Pettigrew or another big-bodied TE, we need to add someone who's a good blocker as well as a receiving threat. No more one or the other types like the Matt Mulligan's of the world.
