WR Miles Austin A Potential Jet If Released

Miles AustinThe New York Jets will be looking to improve their receiving core this offseason considering every available option. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin is a New Jersey native playing collegiately in the state at Monmouth University.

The Cowboys are in bad financial shape and with second year wideout Terrance Williams set to play a bigger role in their offense Austin will likely be a salary cap casualty. In order for the Cowboys to gain much needed cap space this year they need to release Austin after June 1. This will provide the team with $5.5 million in cap space on June 2 but push a $5.1 million charge for Austin into their 2015 cap, known as dead money.

If the Jets are interested in Austin they would prefer to try and negotiate with him as soon as possible. The Cowboys could release Austin on March 12 with a post-June 1 designation, each team is provided two of these per year. This would allow Austin to become a free agent immediately instead of having to wait till June 2 but the Cowboys would get the salary cap relief they desire on June 2, just as if they had waited till then.

Austin will be turning 30 in June and had a down injury plagued season last year with 24 receptions for 244 yards as he dealt with a hamstring issue but did have 66 receptions for 943 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2012. When healthy Austin is a speedy reliable playmaking receiver who could be had on a reasonable one-year incentive laden type contract.

It would certainly be worth exploring bringing in Austin as the team is poised to lose receiver Santonio Holmes and could use a veteran presence to go along with the likely rookie receiver or receivers they draft this year.

Austin has the potential to be very productive with the Jets, basically a low risk high reward signing for a guy with local ties. If released general manager John Idzik and the Jets should definitely take a good hard look at bringing him in.

Did we almost trade a 2nd to Dallas for this guy?

yeah and he hasnt been healthy since...bad hammys

Actually the Jets were pushing hard to get him in the 2009 offseason.  His next 4 years were:81 for 1320 with 11 TDs, 69 for 1041 7 Tds, 43 for 579 and 7 Tds, and 66 for 943 and 6.  They were poised to get him at exactly the right time.  The boards were bitching because prior to that he had like 300 total yards in 3 seasons, but he would have been a good get.  Last year was the first time he was pretty much a zero.

Yes. I was pissed at the time why we were bringing him in considering we had to give up a 2nd for a player that only had 18 receptions in 3 years for just over 350 yards. He had 5 receptions in the first 4 games but then exploded with over 1200 yards, 76 receptions and 10 TDs in the next 12 games.

When healthy, he is an actual monster that can eat ur secondary with blazing football speed. Keyword: When healthy!

He was on the injury list every wk. It was very disappointing for the Cowboy fans knowing how much talent was on the bench. No one is giving him a monster contract so his best bet is to take a one year prove it deal, possibly around $3mil salary with a chance to earn maybe another 3-4mil in incentives.

Could you please explain why this is so "painful" I'd appreciate it.

The tense is wrong. He isn't playing collegiately anywhere. He played collegiately at Monmouth.  I know it's just a blog and there isn't any kind of journalistic aspect to any of this at all, but it makes it hard to read or take seriously.

Back on topic, I don't think he's any better than Kerley and he's never healthy. It would have to be on a 1-year "Show Me" deal.

He has an entirely different skill-set than Kerley.

One is a quick-twitch short area guy

The other is a seam stretcher.

Having a different skill set doesn't make him any better. Also, Austin was not the seam stretcher, that would have been Bryant. Austin worked the middle.
