The new Cap'n Munnerlyn thread.

There are multiple reports that Captain Munnerlyn, a cornerback, is scheduled to visit the New York Jets in the coming days (along with WR James Jones, as we noted earlier). Munnerlyn is a nickel cornerback and operates almost exclusively out of the slot. At 5'8", he is not much of an outside cornerback.

That said, Munnerlyn is one of the best in the league at what he does. What's strange is that so is Kyle Wilson, who is still under contract and is also one of the best nickel corners in the league. Where does this leave Wilson? It's not clear. But Munnerlyn is extremely good and is a ferocious player. He would definitely add some needed edge to the secondary. Could a trade be on the horizon for Wilson? We'll find out soon enough.

I'd be OK with the Jets trading Wilson and replacing him with Munnerlyn. And I can see how Idzik could take a CB in round 1 to be across from Milliner.... but we certainly better have some good Safety play if we're going to do this.

We all bash Kyle I'm obviously guilty myself but he's better than you think.

Munnerlyn is a guy way more physical than Wilson(though smaller) and actually gets his head around! I'll have to see how they compare with PI penalties and celebrating in the end zone when your receiver catches the ball but fails to get both feet down as if you defended the pass!

You really think so?

I actually thought this would be a good signing.

He had his best year last year. He is only 5'8'' and was really not thought highly of coming out of South Carolina. He could though serve as a kickoff and PR.

There is still a number of CB's out there that IMHO would serve the Jets better.

I thought he was like a Ray Mickens. Really good short area quickness to guard against the slot. I could see the Jets using him and Wilson together in a platoon like situation. That was my initial thought anyway.

Wilson one of the best nickel CBs in the league? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Gonna need some evidence.

PFF has consistently had Wilson listed as one of the best nickles in the game for years.  Jets fans are just morons.

That said, him being consistently rated as one of the better slot guys in the league doesnt mean you dont sign Captain.  He's a game changer, ball hawk type and does stuff Wilson cant do, like find the ball.  Wilson is just a solid coverage guy who doesnt give up YAC, which is very important out of the slot.

Interesting, I'll have to look that up. I always thought he would be better outside, since his ball awareness doesn't seem elite and he doesn't have to worry about shadowing WRs.

Pretty much, although I'm not going to pretend to have the greatest grasp of Munnerlyn's skill set.  And as much as I know this concept haunts some people, there's also a very real possibility that, if the Jets sign Munnerlyn, Wilson finds himself in competition for the Jets' #2 CB job.  He was solid enough in that capacity in 2012 and I'm pretty sure graded out as the Jets' best CB last year.  If they have another option at nickel, there's a real chance they let him at least fight for the job with whoever else they bring in at the position, especially given that the CB market in FA is starting to dry up a bit and we learned last year you can hardly blindly count on rookies at the position.

Ihedigbo is visiting Detroit. Can't imagine why we wouldn't be interested. He was really good in Baltimore last year and we have basically nothing at safety.

A few people like this idea. I don't.  I don't think that highly of Ihedigbo in coverage and I think he tends to duplicate (even if an upgrade) the skillsets of the guys on the roster.

That's exactly what I'd expect to happen. They also have Lankster and Walls under contract. They could fill out the group with an early/mid-round pick, or maybe bring in someone named Cromartie after the money dries up around the league. I think they're ready to go with Milliner as their #1 CB.
