Smizzy
MLB | Blockbuster Trade Talks Sun, 1 Jan 2006 14:35:56 -0800 Roger Rubin, of the New York Daily News, reports there have been talks of a four team trade involving the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The trade would send Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez and Devil Rays RP Danys Baez to the Mets. Orioles SS Miguel Tejada and Devil Rays CF Joey Gathright would go to the Red Sox. The Orioles would acquire Devil Rays SS Julio Lugo and possibly Mets SP Kris Benson and Red Sox SP Matt Clement. The Devil Rays would receive young prospects like P Aaron Heilman and SP Jae Weong Seo from the Mets.

mbn007
Good deal for the Mets (in spite of taking on a lot of salary) and the Bosox (in spite of losing perhaps the best run producer in the game). So-so for teh Birds, as they lose a slugger, and do not replace him. Bad deal for the Rays.

SOOO make the trade...get manny in Flushing, get Baez in flushing...and we are talking Playoffs for the METS and Yanks because...the Red Sox are weakened without MAN-RAM in the lineup! Mavrik
This trade just doesn't make sense for the Orioles. The O's need to address their pitching situation, which is a given, but doing it by trading your most significant source of runs and RBIs? This is going to leave a GAPING hole in that Orioles lineup. The Orioles do not feature one player that can contribute as much as Tejada does. With Tejada, Palmeiro, and Sosa (who was useless anyway) gone, a lineup that looked promising has turned to utter garbage. Ramirez for Tejada would have benefitted the O's. This is a wash. AFJF
I'd hate to see the Sox get Gathright. He was a guy I was hoping the Yanks would target if they couldn't get Damon. Damon is the better option today, Gathright is a better long term solution. I realize he hasn't proven much on offense at the ML level but at the very least he offers elite speed in the OF and on the bases while he learns to be a bit more patient at the plate. Joey probably does not contribute much offensively in 2006, but his speed an OF play should help somewhat. But if he learns patience, and works at it, he will be much better for 2007. BTW - If I'm the O's , I would rather Arroyo instead of Clement.
