This image actually doesn't show Kyle Wilson as being too bad.  He's a step behind the ball, but the receiver is clearly reaching way out, looks like he's diving for the ball almost, and the ball is on the tips of his fingers.  If the pass was merely good-right in the receiver's chest-Wilson was in position to make a play.

By "make a play", in Wilson's case that means knock the WR's hands away from the ball before he can pull it in, which he sometimes actually does.  Forget about knocking the ball down before it gets to the receiver, he never turns his head around to do that.  But he sticks with his man pretty well and sometimes, on a really good pass, he really does grab the receiver's arms and prevents the completion.

The reason Wilson and other CB's do this is because when you turn around to locate the ball, you lose at least half a step.  You have to be completely even with the receiver to do this or you fall back and when the ball goes over your head it looks like you were outrun or beat.  So they stay a half step behind the receiver and when he tries to bring it in they get their hands in and try to break up the pass. Sometimes it works.

Not totally sure about the idiots part, but Wilson is an above average outside guy, played well in 2012 when Revis went down, and a very good slot guy.

The "idiots" part is the only thing I am totally sure about.

This all comes down to the extremely Jet-Centric point of view that so many posters have here.

Kyle Wilson has been a solid player for this team.  He's not great.  But, he's been good.  You're not going to have pro-bowlers at every position (ode to smash).  He's not a pro-bowler.  That's okay..

It reminds me of the old No Fear shirt... "I've never lost... I've only been a few points behind when time ran out."  That's the expectation of so many fans.  In reality, the other guys get paid too.  Kyle Wilson is a solid player who WRs, who are professionals who get paid to get open, sometimes get open on.  Same goes for teams that come out and beat us.

The reason we hate Wilson are threefold:

1 - he's been a disappointment considering where he was drafted.  the secondary is the weak pt of the defense and it seems like all we do is use high picks on DB's.   In the last 5 seasons the Jets have committed: 3 1st's, 1 2nd, 1 3rd and we are going into the season with UDFA and late rd picks geting playing time.

2 - the finger waving.   How many times do we watch Wilson get beat deep and then start with the finger waving when the pass is overthrown.   He talks more sh*t after getting beaten like a drum than any player in the NFL.

3 - not turning his head to find the ball.    this is DB 101 and really an indictment of the Jets scouting dept under Tannenbaum.    How can you pick a DB that doesn't play the ball?    We are 5 years into the Kyle wilson experiment and he still refuses to turn his head to play the ball.   he has not improved a bit in his time in the NFL.

If he was mickens-like in the slot I could see justifying the pick.   As it is he is another wasted 1st rd pick and an unlikeable player on top of it.

Cornerbacks are a super headache. i think the league is waking up to the fact that one does not need 10 million dollar corners to win. It will be interesting to see how these big mouths handle it when the price goes steadily down

Problem is Rex has already said Wilson is one of the smartest guys in the secondary. He can play every spot on the edge and slot and knows all of the assignments for all secondary positions.

Rex has got to stop complimenting guys. His credibility will drop through the floor.

He may know his assignments but he doesn't make the play....I can't think of a single play the guy has ever made...64 games played , 3 int 17 passes defended

Yes .... and sadly therein lies the problem ...  he's probably a nice individual ... even has a buddy that posts here ... just sucks large as a defensive back.

If that sh*tring Holmes makes the Bears squad  - and other than a physical problem he most likely will - we will see Greenie's prophesy come true from this afternoon when he went on record that Holmes would win at least one game for the Bears this season.

When we play them on 9/22 and Brandon Marshall is doubled as is Alshon Jeffery ... even those here who think that Kyle Wilson deserves to wear an NFL jersey - please answer me what kind of chance WaggerBoy has of keep Santonio Holmes out of the endzone?

I think no chance. But on the subject of chances, what chance would he have of keeping Marshall or Jeffery out if they were his coverages? Me thinks the same zero. Make him go away.

Santonio 4 catches 113 yards and 2 td's.....kyle Wilson celebrates 4th quarter incompletion that hits him in back of the head

This.

As is the Jets fan way, for whatever reason, people evaluate their opinions of a player about 5 minutes after he's on the team and refuse to ever change their beliefs after that.  Which is why ever since the messy start to his career, so many refuse to acknowledge any degree of ability or success.  It's the same reason for the endless blind support any Jets QB who isn't awful out of the gate gets for the rest of their lives, no matter how badly they fail afterwards.

He's a disappointment for sure, but nowhere near as bad as so many around here claim him to be.  What makes this thread so amusing is that the vast majority of the folks on this board endlessly curse Wilson's name, and it's seen as blasphemy any time someone has a single non-insulting word to say about the guy.

Being over drafted means he's gotten WAY more playing time then he's deserved.

I would agree if it weren't for the fact that there hasn't exactly been anyone being held down below him on the depth chart.  I suppose you could argue that his draft position kept them from making a distinct effort to replace him (although they did re-sign Cro and draft Milliner), but there was never really any better options below him on the roster.  He's certainly not a playmaker, but he's been a solid nickel and they'll let him keep that exact role until he plays out his contract.

There is something I don't get and it's that a decent amount of jet fans dont seem to think Wilson is a bad corner. He's a terrible corner. Here's a typical game for Wilson....look around pre snap shaking your head cuz you don't know what the hell is going on....you stand in place as the receiver comes running full speed at you and you begin your backpedal as he reaches (and subsequently gets a step or two one you)....finally ball is thrown, you have no idea what to do while it's in nth air and lucky for you the receiver was overthrown and catch not made..now celebrate. If this guy is a starting corner I will lose my mind. I've resigned myself to the fact that Kyle Wilson will be one of those players who is here forever, and like Bryan Thomas he will be remembered for being a "jet for life" who "wasn't all that bad." Remember this guy was taken round 1 and has been nothing short of disappointing his career.

Well, considering Rex would rather move his starting FS, ex-linebacker, over to corner and shuffle things from there than start KW...should speak volumes. It's not that he's just an irreplacable dime specialist.

I was thinking the same thing, but then wondering if he wants to use the pre-season to see what Allen can do.  He's seen all the other CB's play the position extensively.  Why not throw Allen out there for a look just to see how he handles it?  I think he was covering well enough in TC to warrant it.
