Pete Carroll knows what the Patriots are planning

ORLANDO, Fla. — Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll got together for a little shop talk while here at the NFL’s annual meeting.

Naturally, Brandon Brown-er came up in the course of discussion, and so did Darrelle Revis.

“We were kind of kicking it around a bit,” Carroll said yesterday, flashing a smile after mentioning his conversation with Belichick.

Thanks in part to the Super Bowl success of Carroll’s Seahawks, defense is back in vogue in the NFL. While the league has been bent for years on maximizing offensive production, Seattle proved once again that defense still wins championships.

As NFL analyst Herm Edwards told the Herald last week, Carroll laid out the blueprint during the Seahawks’ 43-8 Super Bowl romp over the Broncos.

“People can talk about the rules, rules, rules,” Edwards said, “but if you watched the Super Bowl, the best offense in captivity had eight points. So you can still play defense. So I think you’re going to see more guys (going that route) now; if you have corners who have the ability to play bump and run, they’re going to play bump and run.”

The Patriots now have those corners. Both Revis and Browner can play press, man-to-man coverage, disrupting receivers at the line. It’s what Carroll initially had with Richard Sherman and Browner, and later with Sherman and Byron Maxwell, who took over at the opposite corner when Browner was suspended prior to Week 16.

Having press ability from two corners is a big part of what has made the Seahawks defense so successful.

“Nobody knows better than Bill. He’ll know what to do with them,” Carroll said when asked the benefit of having both Revis and Browner. “But when you play our style at the line of scrimmage, and you’re totally committed to it, I think it’s the most aggressive, dominant way to play coverage. I’ve been a believer of that for a long time.”

There’s no question the Seahawks were a dominant defense from top to bottom in 2013. It’s what the Patriots are hoping to become. The revamped secondary will help. Even Carroll sounded a little jacked and pumped about it.

He called the pairing of Revis and Browner “pretty cool, pretty exciting,” and is looking forward to seeing how it all works out for the Pats.

Carroll has a good idea how Browner will work out, having coached him the past three years.

“They’re getting a terrific football player. He is a great competitor, a fierce competitor,” Carroll said of Browner, who still has to serve a four-game suspension at the start of the season. “When he finally gets back to playing, I know he’ll work out really hard to get ready and all that. He’ll show them why he was part of a really good secondary. He’s got tremendous skills. He’s a very unique football player. He’s got a great sense for the position and he’s tough. He’s a real tough dude.”

In Seattle, it made economic sense to let the former CFL player walk. The Seahawks have a younger, cheaper option in Maxwell.

Carroll said that while the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Browner can play off the line, that’s not the best way to use him.

“He presses. He’s built for that,” Carroll said. “He’s so long and so big and so aggressive. That’s when he’s at his best.”

Belichick indicated Tuesday he will reserve judgment as to how and where the new parts will fit in his scheme.

Like most people, the fan in Carroll can’t wait to see how Belichick deploys his retooled defense, particularly the pairing of Revis and Browner.

“It’ll be fun to watch those guys play together. I’m anxious to see how they use them, how they do it,” Carroll said. “Bill’s a great football coach. He’ll figure out how to use those guys, but I’ll be curious to see how it works out.”

If all goes according to plan, Carroll has a pretty good idea how it will go. He’s already seen the end game.

Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick in a room discussing what wins championships, with Herman Edwards analyzing their discussion...I don't care what Browns fans say, being a Jets fan is the absolute ******* worst.

RIght?   Other teams just suck. We live in a torture chamber which never ceases to find new and creative ways to twist our souls. It's unreal actually.

Up next.. Foles goes down in week one and Sanchez comes in to lead one of the most proficient offenses in recent memory and plays the Revis Patriots in the Super Bowl.  ahhhh the delightful pain.

And then be lauded by the media for his ability to make tough decisions

No doubt.

Remember how stupid and asleep at the wheel the Jets were when Tannenbaum failed to land Adalius Thomas, Chad Johnson, or Albert Haynesworth? Those moves were examples of why Belichick's a genius.  When he cut bait with them - eerily close to the time they were brought in - were also examples of why he's a genius.

His Genius can be summed up in two words "Tom Brady" that is all...
