Why the Jaguars can win Saturday Night.

Although I wanted the Pats to face the Jaguars instead of the Steelers, this upcoming game is no slam dunk. Some recent events have me scared.

1) Karma Lets not fool ouselves into thinking that the Pats REALLY wanted to win the game yesterday. If that were so - the starters would not have been pulled by the start of the second quarter, Cassel would not have been the number two QB, Flutie would never have dropped kick in lieu of "automatic Adam" and Branch would not have come in for one play in the fourth in order to get his 1,000 yards (he did - but was negated by a penalty - he remains at 997). Now, this sort of thing could bite the Pats in the arse. The whole "be careful of what you ask for." Are you telling me that the Jags will not find yesterdays performance a sign of disrespect? It was. Absolutely, it was. Jags will be pissed off. DelRio will use this "disrespect" as motivation. No one knows this tactic better than the Pats and its fans. Add to that, that the Jags (a 12 win team) are 7.5 dogs and well, there you have it. All the motivation a team needs.

2) Jaguars QB Who is the Jags QB? The rusty, but veteran starter Byron, or the mobile Gerard? Do you go with the hot hand or will DelRio be loyal? Pats must game plan for two different QB's. A heavy load indeed.

3) The Bruschi Factor This is especially true if Gerard starts. Defensive run lane dicipline is paramount. Bruschi - the defensive capatin and signal caller - is the epitome of dicipline and leadership. If he starts and plays, the run can be stopped. However, if he can't go....the Pats play Beisel. Beisel who has all the dicipline of a toddler at Toy-R-Us. Beisel who over-pursues and ends up out of position all the time. Vrabel is terrific, but he's not Bruschi. Bruschi is the leader of that defense. No Bruschi could be a scarey proposition.

Here is my fear about this game.

Leftwhich starts the game and stinks up the joint because he hasn't played in 6 weeks.

Gerard comes in and lights the joint up.

I'd much rather face a rusty Leftwhich than Gerard.

Completely disagree. There's one game in the first week of the playoffs that's a steal every year; this is it. This is God's annual gift to degenerate gamblers. Bellichcik and Brady at home vs. Del RIo is a steal, even at 8 points.

Could happen, TX. Stopping the run is the key to a Pats victory. This is why Bruschi MUST play....even at 75%. A 75% Tedy is far superior to a 100% Besiel. Neither Jags QB scares me through the air. Perhaps I am being foolish. I think the Pats could tee-off on a still injured Bryon. LB blitzes could work well here.

I'm hoping for 10 degree weather and snow showers.

nice rose-smelling arse....

'wanna know why I post here more than Patsfans.com. Here is why. Homerism to the point of nausea sometimes. If I did not know any better, I say the mighty midget himself wrote this post:

Flutie's Drop-Kick... this should be his legacy!

I've been a fan of this guy since the "Hail Mary" - I loved the USFL and was happy to see him join the Generals in 85.

We got to see him in action during the 96 Grey Cup in Hamiltion in the CFL and I followed his herky jerky jaunt through the NFL.

One thing he always did was bring excitement to the game.

NOW FOR HIS LEGACY:

Okay, yesterday's drop kick was pointless (pun intended) and Doug himself said that the play has no real application in the NFL.

But, what if the NFL rules committee enacted a "FLUTIE RULE" - that is, make the drop-kick extra point another option for the two point conversion.

This would probably have the effect of making the overall 2-point conversion rate go up as defense would have to defend again a pass, run or kick...

and, the NFL would have an exciting new play with a "real application" that draws from its past.

....however, my guess is that Pitt defeats Cincy. That would have the Pats play Denver IN Denver. Denver ALWAYS gives NE fits and Denver usually wins. This may sound nuts to some - but I bet TX and PFSKH would agree: Denver is a more formidable foe that Indy.
