EVERYTHING CHRIS JOHNSON: MERGED

As mentioned in the Revis threads. ESPN almost seemed like they already knew he was going to NE. I feel like that's the same case here. They have mentioned the Jets way too much at this point with such confidence that I feel like they already know but just are just protecting teams with tampering violations because all teams clearly do it.

The New York Daily News reports the Jets "really like" the idea of pairing free agent Chris Johnson with Chris Ivory, and that a potential deal will "come down to money."

According to reporter Manish Mehta, the Jets have no concerns about Johnson's work ethic. Johnson/Ivory would immediately become one of the league's best thunder and lightning duos, while CJ?K could operate as an every-down back were the injury-prone Ivory to miss time. Word has yet to leak of a Johnson visit to the Big Apple, but it's sounding like a good bet.

mehta already setting up the "cheap idzik" angle

The cheap Idzik angle is not a creation of the dumb ole press. There's a league floor and the Jets are below the floorboards.

The Jets have the lowest spending in the league right now, by far. 92 mil a full 10 million behind the Texans.

2nd most cap space available with about 28 mil free. That's with 12 mil in dead money.

Admittedly 12 draft picks is more than most but even if all make the roster it's not that much total on rookies (9 mil?)

Psshhhh... lighten up cat butt.

I was reading up on him back in the fall -- kid can't be stopped.  His 3rd year was a real let down, like he was a completely different player.  Definitely came back with a vengeance though.

At least some people get tongue-in-cheek. :)

Oh by the way, on the chance that let's say we do sign him- will Idzik get any respect for not guaranteeing $15 mil to the DRC's of the world? Because I have to think a nice piece of the would have been interested buyers are stuck now with a hand or so now behind the back in the cap.

no sh*t

what mehta is doing is eliminating everything else from consideration (team prestige, QB, HC, owner, stadium, weather, state income taxes, legalization of weed) and making it just about money to fit the narrative that idzik is cheap

he gave decker a boat load of money.  when he really wants a guy, he can spend

No idea if this is legit or not but this was just passed along to me

@emesola: Someone close to Chris Johnson told me that he's meeting with the Jets first. But also plans to meet with the Giants. Flew out of Orlando...

Erika used to post here. She is a legit reporter in Orlando. I wouldn't doubt if she has a source.

fixed

Or a top 5 safety, or a top 5 RB, or maybe they want to have a talk with possibly the best QB in the draft even thou he is rehabbing a injury ect.

You don't go to LSU's pro day for 1, or 2 guys, your looking at 5-10 players easy.

Free-agent running back Chris Johnson in New York; not scheduled to meet with Jets on trip

BY MANISH MEHTA    NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Published: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 10:28 PM Updated: Tuesday, April 8, 2014, 10:28 PM A A A

Chris Johnson is released by the Titans and is in New York on Tuesday.

The Daily News has learned that free-agent running back Chris Johnson was in New York on Tuesday night, but he is not scheduled to meet with the Jets as part of his trip.

The Jets are interested in the three-time Pro Bowler if the price is right, according to sources. The team is intrigued by the potential backfield tandem of Chris Ivory and Johnson, who was officially released by the Tennessee Titans on Monday.

The Jets have no concerns about Johnson’s work ethic, which was called into question in a report by the Tennessean newspaper over the weekend. Johnson, 28, has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his six seasons in the NFL.

Johnson tweeted Tuesday afternoon that he was traveling out of town from his home base in Orlando, but later clarified in a second tweet: “I’m traveling for personal reason no team visit today.”

The Titans had been actively shopping Johnson, who was scheduled to make $8 million in base salary in 2014. The Jets were among a few teams that inquired about trading for Johnson before he was released, according to a source.

Although Johnson hasn’t been able to duplicate his 2,000-yard season from 2009, he would provide a home-run threat that the Jets are lacking. Don’t expect the Jets, who have about $26 million in salary-cap space, to overpay for the speedy running back.

The depressed market for backs probably means that Johnson will be in line for $3 million-$4 million a year on a short-term deal.

Although Johnson wasn’t scheduled to visit the Jets’ facility in New Jersey on his trip, that doesn’t mean he won’t at some point.

General manager John Idzik and Rex Ryan will be attending LSU Pro Day on Wednesday.

Exactly,..but mehta will have half the fan base up in arms as if we blew off Barry Sanders in his prime to go see Stony Brooks pro day

looks like CJ is in the "we'll call you if we strike out in the draft" pile or he is asking for 10mm per

Yeah, it looks like he's in the cold dose of reality period of free agency. It's crazy how little speculation there is about potential suitors. The only info you're getting is when another teams claims DISinterest.

Agree.  If Johnson isn't looking for some ridiculous contract and comes at a bargain basement price, this would be a nice addition to the offense.

Ok I guess it is time for a decision-good move IMO to add him at a reasonable price
