EVERYTHING CHRIS JOHNSON: MERGED

Recommended Posts

I expect this to happen. Rex liked veteran backs before Idzik got here, and Idzik likes veteran backs.

well that, and the market is dry enough for Johnson that he'll accept Idzik's low ball offer

Idzik can change the face of this offense by signing Johnson and Jackson makes us an immediate Super Bowl contender.

If Idzik thinks the Jets don't instantly improve the RB position and offense with signing Chris Johnson then he's an idiot.   Ivory-Powell-Goodson-Green worst RB corps in the NFL

Well, this is embarrassing.

There has been much speculation around the possibility of ex-Titans running back Chris Johnson joining the Jets.  Looks like that speculation is about to get a lot more intense.  Adam Schefter is reporting that Chris Johnson is currently at Jets facility training facility.

Chris Johnson will be 29 years old this season, so the Jets would be looking at Johnson to be part of the solution at running back.  It isn’t believed that he would be the featured back, so the Jets won’t break the bank to bring him here.  Much has been made about John Idzik’s pursuit of value in regards to signing free agents.  Chris Johnson was released from the Titans earlier this month, since he is still available he could be just the value the Jets (and John Idzik) need.

Although Johnson had his lowest rushing average last year (3.9) he has rushed for over 1,000 yards every year that he has been in the NFL.  Johnson and Ivory would be an interesting one – two punch.

Please be sure to check out our New York Jets message board for the latest updates on Chris Ivory.

I think this was Idzik's plan all along in regards to Johnson. Have him sit around and wait to drive the price down. He knew that teams like the Browns or the Dolphins couldn't make a play for them since they already signed a running back, so he sat back and waited so the price would come down.

Just for perspective, if Idzik does get Johnson he would have signed the best WR available, the best QB available, and the best RB available during this free agency period. There were a lot of people freaking out during this free agency period, but if the beginning of the free agency you were told (stoic) that we would sign those guys you would be happy. Yes, he missed out on some defensive players that would have been useful, but it is pretty obvious that Idzik is not going to reach, and maybe that is better.

Yeah, absolutely. CJ's choices right now could be either accept Idzik's offer or see what teams are offering after the draft.

Took too long. Sucks.

These would be better moves of they were all made 30 days ago. And if all of them got another $3M/year apiece.

It still comes down to the draft picks & who we get. But so far on paper I like this off-season. I think there are a couple of positions we're likely to grab (CB, WR) but those are supposedly the deepest positions in the draft so either one can wait and we're not locked into either with any round pick. If value is there in rounds 1-2, grab one. If not, that's the value of a deep draft: no need to reach for need early.

After the draft or after he can run again. I wonder if this is a "make an offer" meeting or one of those meetings where they discuss interest, parameters and terms for when he can work out.  The Jets had Cribbs in a couple of times before he actually signed.  They waited and didn't clear him and the Raiders signed him first and cut him in August.  The Jets didn't have him back in until later.

Bingo.  And of course there's definitely some risk there.  Sure, he could wait until he's completely healthy to potentially help his market value with that, but of course the need at the position is only going to further decrease once teams have added rookies into the fold, at a position that already doesn't have the same level of interest it once did.  From Idzik's perspective, it looks like he feels confident Johnson will be healthy during the season and making a move now can get him at a cheaper price while cutting down the list of needs come draft day.

Completely agree and while some moves still need to be made there, another thing to keep in mind is that for those two biggest positions of need, WR has already been clearly upgraded and, given how awful Cro was last year, CB should be about the same and, if Milliner's play at the end of last season is any indication, potentially upgraded just based on further development from a very young group of CBs.  So it's not to say that those positions couldn't clearly use some further help, but the Jets are not finding themselves in a situation where the offseason has seriously hurt them at these positions and they're desperate to just try to replace a key player via the draft, as that's typically the biggest recipe for disaster.

Is it just me or does anyone else think it's amazing and great that not one person has known what FA are coming to visit.

Ian Rappaport found out he was already in the building today ? Decker was spotted on a plane headed to NY ?

The best part of this off season so far is that no one knows anything. No reporter no fans. Just how it should be.

The Jets apparently think this a 2011 Fantasy Football draft. He hasn't been a great player for a very long time.

He won't be brought in to be a great player, he will be here to be a complimentary player and will be paid as such. No one is expecting him to be the workhorse, just to be lightning to Ivory's thunder.

Chris Johnson was met with a very cold market, as have all running backs this off-season, he's most likely not going to get a huge contract. He is also not going to be asked to be a feature back, it's very much akin to the LT singing a handful of years ago.  You really just seem to look for things to complain about don't you?

Then it's a meh signing that doesn't really improve the team that much and just adds to the rest of the off season that they came into with a terrible roster that they haven't improved nearly as much as they needed to.

Thanks, typically do more reading than posting, but will try to post some more, especially when there is more things to talk about

Hopefully the Jets make that possible!

CJ is exactly what Jets need. A catcher out of the backfield that can take it to the house. receiving handoffs is usually what gets CJ those negative plays. We got a guy for that already.

bad year to wait. not like there are first round RBs that a team will miss out on and be forced to pick up the phone and call CJ's agent.

Agree.  If Johnson isn't looking for some ridiculous contract and comes at a bargain basement price, this would be a nice addition to the offense.

Any bargain basement price would be a nice addition. He won't be a bargain basement price player. If he signs with the Jets he will be given a contract based on his value, and he's not a bottom of the barrel project/RB. He will be paid more than that given that Ivory is an injury prone back, which means that Johnson may have to carry the load. That will/should be part of the conversation by his agent.

None the less though, Idzik has shown that he will place value on a player and will not stray too far from the price ask Austin Howard.
