wait to spend big $$ in 2014/15 in FA after seeing what this years draft brings to the team. I dont think spending $$ this year helps anyways  cause I dont think Jets are a SB valid team this year. I think if we hit it big with draft and another year learning  MM's Off system etc then 2014/15 would be where we spend the $$ on holes in team. Let the 2012 draft address current holes while team in in semi rebuild mode. When SB run ready, then spend the bucks.

But I'm an old man, so who the hell knows, carry on my fellow Bleed Greeners no matter what side of a opinion we may take..

I'm all about giving Geno another year to define/refine his game and put some additional pieces into the offensive puzzle, but our defensive backfield has potential to be horrific and it's not like we're rich in the safety dept either.

I'm elated Idzik realizes this, but expecting rooks to come in and fill those gaps effectively isn't realistic and I don't know what he thinks he's going to get/give in the trade market. To spend money frivolously today on offense while we've got a D that could be worse than last year's isn't smart in my book.

good post SJ.

as we have let FA settle and now appear ready to pass on DJax, I am feeling OK heading into the draft and the rest of the offseason. we're not the Redskins with 6 picks. we have 12 picks, 6 in the top 4 rounds. 12 frecking draft picks in a deep, deep draft. huge. and we may be in on CJ2K, would be a solid move.

our secondary as it currently stands is average in my opinion. it's not some barren wasteland like some people think it is. couple more pieces back there and a solid training camp, we could be OK. strength of the D will be the front 7 anyway.

hey man chill out they appreciate in value it's a good investment

That was literally the funniest part of the whole thing.  I suppose anyone that actually thought they were buying into an investment of some kind go exactly what they deserved.

I pointed this scenario out earlier in the off season. I think this is exactly the thinking behind it by Idzik. He doesn't feel like we are ready to take that next step this year. I think he wants to give Geno one more yr to get accustomed to the NFL. Once in his 3rd year, Idzik will provide him with more weapons. Let the 2014 left over cap carryover to 2015 and then use all that cap to pick up several key FAs while having the flexibility of resigning all of our own FAs regardless of how great they perform in 2014.

The only defensive player we lost this year is Cromartie, who, by the way, was ranked 102nd out of 110 or so Corners. As bad as Cro played in 2013, we can draft a 1st/2nd day rookie, plug him in and still get similar results....all while Dee Milliner seems to fit right in to the NFL. Remember, Revis struggled in his first few games as well so its not like Dee Milliner is a bust.

I think the funniest, most ridiculous insinuation is that we're not spending as much as we could in FA this year because Idzik & the rest of the FO think we're a 10-win team already so their work is done.

To me, Idzik is operating this offseason like he thinks that, with Geno Smith starting, we're a 6-win roster with a dozen draft picks coming up.  With Vick - if Smith is just that bad this summer - it might be a couple more wins until he gets hurt, in theory.  But even when he was putting up good fantasy points on the field these past couple of seasons, the Eagles were losing football games left and right until Foles stepped in for good.  But hey, Vick sure had his way against the Bolts early last year.  I mean so did Terrelle Pryor, but like, whatevz.

If Smith takes a big leap forward, awesome for us.  If he doesn't, it sucks, but it would suck worse if we just spent our cap flexibility on guys with inconsistent careers, while we again begin the search for a new rookie QB in 2015.

Pretty much. He's playing the risk management game. It makes sense to leave multiple escape strategies at the beginning of your tenure because it means you can change directions quickly. Outbidding everyone when you have the cap space is easy, but franchises can't and don't engage in it regularly because the Winner's Curse in the NFL is much greater than other leagues. For a team like the Giants, it makes sense to say **** it because they're screwed for the next few years if Eli is done regardless of how their cap looks.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2014/03/21/2015-nfl-free-agency-colin-kaepernick-cam-newton-earl-thomas/6680079/

A glance at the list of players currently not under contract following this season suggests the 2015 NFL free agent class might be the best ever.

However, a mechanism in the three-year-old collective bargaining agreement was triggered for the first time at the end of the 2013 regular season, and teams must decide by May 3 whether to activate options for 2015 for players taken in the first round of the 2011 draft.

That means Pro Bowlers like Cam Newton, A.J. Green and J.J. Watt -- all likely to ultimately receive huge extensions from their clubs anyway -- almost certainly won't reach the market next year.

"(The new rookie contracts) cover a long period of time with less opportunity to get out and no opportunity to negotiate in the first three years," ESPN sports business analyst Andrew Brandt, formerly a vice president and salary cap specialist for the Green Bay Packers, told USA TODAY Sports. "That gives the team more negotiating leverage. Theoretically -- Newton, Watt, whomever you want to name -- they're under contract for two more years, which gives their teams great negotiating leverage."

Even if, as expected, teams use the 2015 options on the affected players in the next few weeks, they can still cut them before the 2015 season, as long as the players are not hurt.

"Locking a guy in for an injury guarantee is not a big deal," says Brandt. "It's a real bonus for teams. There seems to be little harm or downside to using the option."

However, players picked after Round 1 in 2011 will have the chance to break the bank sooner than their peers who entered the league with more fanfare. Day 2 and Day 3 draft picks can cash in with the franchise tag a year from now if they don't sign bigger deals first.

I expect the following players to improve this year among the starters:  Geno, Milliner, Winters, Kerley (by virtue of playing a full season, I hope), Cumberland, D'Brick (I see no reason why he does not bounce back.  He is still young for an O lineman), Coples, Wilkerson, Richardson, Davis, Barnes (by virtue of health)  I expect all of these guys to have better seasons than they did last year.  I do not think it is unreasonable.  Now since I think the Jets were lucky to win more than 5 games last year they may only win 8 or (could it be magic?) 9.  If they won more I would happily faint.  And you are right, any scrub we play will give us a better performance than Cromartie.  Now, taking all this into consideration, we are also drafting 12 new players.  Some of them will prove to be upgrades as well.  I do not understand all the tragedy on the board.
