DB Patterson to visit Jets today

Pro Football Talk reports that former Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Dimitri Patterson will visit the Jets today, and it looks like there’s a good chance he could be a key member of the team next year. Last year’s first-round pick Dee Milliner is locked in as a starter after improving down the stretch, but the Jets need a starter next to him. Patterson could be that guy, but I wouldn’t rule out the Jets signing him and still drafting somebody with a high pick this year. They have interest in Justin Gilbert and Bradley Roby, who would be excellent picks if they slip a bit so that the Jets could draft them in the first or second round, respectively.

Patterson played in just six games last season after a nagging groin injury that eventually caused him to hit the injured reserve in mid-December, but the 30-year-old was very good when he was healthy. He had something of a surprise six-games for the Dolphins with four interceptions, six passes defended, and 19 tackles, and he would be a solid signing for the Jets due to his affordable price tag.

Bottom of the barrel time!

The Jets are hosting free agent CB Dimitri Patterson on Monday.

Patterson is a 30-year-old slot corner who could be viewed as a value pickup at this stage of free agency. He consistently earned positive marks from Pro Football Focus in Miami, and was always a tough match for inside receivers.

Dimitri Patterson The Jets, who are in need of cornerback depth, are hosting a veteran corner with starting experience on Monday.

Dimitri Patterson, who intercepted four passes in just six games for the Dolphins in 2013, is meeting with the Jets on Monday, PFT’s Mike Florio reported.

An eight-year pro from Tuskegee, the 30-year-old Patterson has started 20 games in the last four seasons in stints with Philadelphia (2010), Cleveland (2011-2012) and Miami (2012-2013). He was limited to just six games a season ago with the Dolphins because of a groin injury. Miami released him on March 10, one day before the start of free agency.

The Jets released cornerback Antonio Cromartie on March 9.meeting with Jets

Oh no. Not depth.... Anything but that.... We don't need a well rounded team or a dime corner! We need superstars! We need names, people, names. If he isn't on espn what worth does he have to the jets?

Yeah, I don't think I've heard of him enough, so definitely don't sign him.

Those are pretty good stats for a six game season.

If we use the Stephen-Hill-method-of-stat-projection, he would have been good for 10 interceptions, 16 passes defensed, and 50 Tackles. Solid.

Depth is great... when you have starters in front of it. When you don't, it's just called "being a bad team."

Interestingly enough, it doesn't seem like on this board, it's the young kids who are calling for this.

Maybe some of the old guys are feeling a little rushed for time?

So you think the Jets will be a bad team next year?

At this point, I think they're an 8-8 team, give or take, because:

1. They overachieved a bit last year,

2. The schedule is tougher this season and,

3. They haven't done enough to improve the team this off-season.

The draft picks will help, but I still don't think that gets them above 8-8. It's easy to forget that every team has picks, so every team improves in that way. What is really comes down to is that we have 2 extra 4th rounders and a few extra 6th and 7th rounders as an advantage over the rest. That's not much of an advantage at all.

This thread could have been about literally any NFL player with a heartbeat, and just because he has that heartbeat, he's "depth." Sorry, just the fact that a guy exists does not automatically make him a good signing.

Finally you get it now extraploate it to all the people you wanted the Jets to sign

I've never been against discrimination---picking and choosing which players do or don't fit your scheme, who you think you can get better value out of, etc.

The thing is, it's not my job to figure out which guys do/don't fit the scheme or who is going to provide more value per dollar. That's Idzik's job. His job is to find those guys and improve the team, and he has failed miserably at that job this off-season.

Your previous post seemed to suggest that the Jets were following the approach that a bad team follows.  Now you say they are an 8 and 8 team. So just to clarify, are the Jets a bad team in your opinion?

At this point in time? If you want a specific answer, I'll say that they're a slightly below average team. I don't know if that's "bad" to you, but it's definitely closer to "bad" than to good.

To be a little clearer on my problem with the potential signing: it's nice to sign a decent backup safety or corner. It would be even nicer to sign a legitimate starting safety or corner.

Then why are you whining so much about passing on FAs?

You mean, because you haven't heard of him, he obviously can't be good?  When he grades our positively, that's ya know, a positive. Those are not bad signings.
