I will readily admit that Ryan is a good defensive coch, better than Edwards, Groh or Mangini(do you see a trend here about what this franchise overvalues in a coach? in draft picks? ). The central conceit of all this Rex loving is the guy, like his father, is worthless when it comes to offense. Again, you can overvalue the wins in December vs. the hapless Browns and Dolphins. That is the definition of a small sample size. The Big Picture which no one can refute is the Points Per Game went from 28th to 29th.Morninheg certainly apers t have a better grasp of things, but the stats aren't showing dramatic improvement.

So our coach in 5 years is a nonfactor when it comes to offense, Keep in mind that what ever you think about Bellicheat at least recognize a successful head coach has to understand the other side of the ball. Heck, if you're a defensive coach a least you might recognize how a good offense might attack any defense. Our guy doesn't do that . And he needs all the top picks spare the biggest mistake in Pick 6. But recall he was all in on that debacle.

WRECKS IS GREAT! YEAH! WOO HOO!

Not having a QB usually hurts your chances at fielding a good offense.  I know, its Rex's fault he was stuck with Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith.  Its totally what Rex would do with his first pick as a head coach, trade up for a sh*tty junior QB with 1 year under his belt.  That was toally on all on Rex as it follows his logic and passion through and through.  And of course, he was screaming for Geno Smith to start last year.  That was his ideal situation for a head coach on the hot seat.

And BB was a mastermind before Brady.  Oh wait, actually, he was a perpetual loser but yeah BB knows all and Rex doesnt like HOF QB's.

Here's what happened: When the Jets went to work out Sanchez at Mission Viejo High in California on March 24, he was so impressive and cast such a presence on the practice field that Ryan turned to Tannenbaum and said: "This is our guy. Let's go get him."

Bill Bilichik once put together a "lowlight" reel of Bernie Kosar to present to the front office as justification to sit him in favor of Todd Philcox. Philcox went on to complete less than 50% of his passes while throwing 7 TD's and 9 INT's.

“What’s up, Franchise?”

That’s how Jets coach Rex Ryan greeted Mark Sanchez at the Jets’ training complex in New Jersey the other day. It’s not a rare thing. “That’d be taboo for a lot of coaches to say to a player, obviously,” Sanchez said late Sunday afternoon, soaking in the biggest win of his, oh, eight-day pro playing career. “It’s the elephant in the room, but coach Ryan just goes ahead and talks about the elephant. I like that.”

So unfair how Rex had Sanchez forced on him

Then what happened?

The downtrodden New England Patriots hired him. He showed the world that his 5-11 record the previous in Cleveland was no fluke by producing an identical record with his new team.  After that, Tom Brady rescued him from what was a lifetime of being an excellent defensive coordinator and convinced people like you that he was a genius despite a sub .500 record up to that point.  That's what happened next.

At what point did I say that?  I said Brady rescued BB. Rex just needs a QB who can muster a 1/1 TD/INT ratio and the Jets will be vastly improved.  How Rex keeps winning more than three games a year with the QB's he's had is crazy. BB produced losing records in five of his first six seasons as an NFL HC...far worse than Rex.  We should still fire Rex though, and just hire one of the dozen or so posters on here who would do so much better.

listening to the show the other day

you guys had a dispute whether 10 years was a realistic window for a SUper Bowl win, and the host said 3-5 years or bust.

Here's the hard truth, all of it is unrealistic. the idea of the Jets winning a Super Bowl, every year, is a 1 in 32 chance (it could actually be lower if we consider the QB situation).

so yeah. Rex needs Tom Brady. Carroll needs Russell Wilson. Tomlin needs Big Ben. No coach can win it all without something special at the QB position. Firing the coach doesn't change that winning it all is unlikely, every year. Just wanting it doesn't change anything. Everyone wants it.

Any coach, no matter how good, needs the horses to get it done.  What's the old saying?  "It's more about Jimmys and Joes than x's and o's"

So many coaches have success without a QB.  Its like, very common in the NFL.  Teams win SB's with Mark Sanchez type talent every season.  Just look at Pete Carrol and how awesome the Seahawks were before Russell Wilson.

Drew Bledsoe was more responsible for that first AFC Championship win.  And Brady might have been the MVP of that first super bowl win, but he didn't exactly play that great.   It was the defense that won that game and a kicker.   If Adam misses the FG, nobody thinks much of Brady.  And who knows what happens going forward.

People forget that the Patriots were a pretty damn good team those years and Brady had some Sanchez like numbers.   Sanchez actually had a decent postseason, even though he was a terrible QB.     A big part of being a coach is developing players.    Rex has been awful in developing players.  He took over a 9-7 team who should have been 11-5 if Favre and Mangini weren't idiots.   And after a few years, this team sucked.  Now it's rebuild again.     Rex seems to be a great coach when it comes to 8-8 like seasons.  Beyond that, I'm not so sure.

Blame it on Tanny, blame it on Idzik, blame it on all the assistant coaches and OC and so on, but somehow Rex gets a pass after 5 years as a HC.  People say Gruden took over a super bowl winning team.   Well Rex took over a team who was like 8-3 the season before with Favre before they choked down the stretch and Favre was injured.    I'm not sure why Rex gets a pass 5 years into his HC regime and the Jets are pretty much in a rebuilding mode.    He's a good enough coach to always have a good defense and keep the team in most games, but he doesn't seem to have a clue how to improve the team.

The Jets have pretty much struggled to be 8-8 since Rex has been HC.   Blame it on whoever you want, that's who he seems to be.. Lets hope the offense improves and he gets as much as he can out of the young defense.   But who knows.  5 years as a HC isn't exactly no time at all

Jets fans seem to forget our history.

This is a franchise 66 games below .500 all time.

Rex is the 2nd winningest coach in Jets history, behind Bill Parcells. Both Rex and Bill have AFC CG Loss as their best run. Except Rex did it twice.

He's the all time leader in playoff wins.

yeah "somehow" he gets a pass

Here's the thing about Rex; after 2 seasons he was the chosen one. After 3, it was hey, he's never had a losing year. After 4, it was 2 AFCCG's FTW and only 1 losing year. After 5 it was he's only had 1 losing season and 8-8 is the greatest accomplishment ever. So every offseason is essentially another episode of Lowered Expectations in the exact order that it's supposed to be happening, and what this all is headed towards is Woody making a dejected dating video where he states what he's looking for in his next head coach.

Here's the thing about NFL coaches in general: it's about as hard to find a even just a good head coach as it is to find a franchise quarterback, maybe even harder. It's stupid to fire a coach for the sake of firing him, bad organizations do this, good ones don't. Bad organizations have a lot of coaching turnover, good ones don't. There's a reason the Browns were considered a laughing stock for firing their previous HC after less than a year on the job.

Rex has a better playoff winning percentage than media darling Jim Harbaugh and has just as many rings to show for it, Rex has the same number of playoff victories and a better playoff winning percentage than Belichick during his time as coach. Rex is a good football coach; I'm not calling him great, but he's good, but even good is hard to come by in the NFL. Just look at some of the head coaches that were recently hired these past two off seasons, would any of you seriously be content with Jim Caldwell, Rex disciple Pettine, Gus Bradley, Rob Chudzinski, Doug Marrone, etc.? We probably would have given the job to a candidate from this crowd of recent hires and none of them would encourage me about the future of the team.

Did you even watch football in 2001?    Or are you just making stuff up.    Brady had like 1 TD & 1 INT in 3 postseason games that first super bowl run.

Sanchez had 4 TDS & 2 Ints.

The Patriots defense held what might be the best offense of all time to 17 points.  And the Patriots scored 20.    Yeah it was all Tom Brady.

And Rex took over Mangini's team and Favre was gone.   The offense became far less explosive with Sanchez and Rex loved the ground and pound.  It worked out to an 8-8 like season, save for a gimmee vs the Colts.  Which jolted them into the playoffs and they had a great playoff run.   But the Jets were 9-7 the year before Rex and 9-7 his first season.  And they only made the playoffs because the Colts sat Peyton Manning and a few starters.  Yeah that had nothing to do with it.

2009 with rookie Sanchez (and Kellen Clemens starting 1 of those 2009 wins that everyone forgets about and attributes to Sanchez) and wins the same # of games that his predecessor did with Brett Favre. Lol, I'm sure Mangini would have won 9 games with that team with no Brett Favre and no Kris Jenkins. Because Mangini constantly fielded great defensive teams without a true NT; he was such a great adaptor. Plus Vernon Gholston eating up 5% of the team's cap - with tons of pressure to spend (waste) a ton of time/resources on him and turn him into something - is always a big help also for a new HC. From '09 to '10 no UFAs were permitted per league rules (other than the value of UFAs we cut), so the best veteran upgrade we could pick up was a has-been backup OLB (Taylor).

With only 1 month of Kris Jenkins, and with a rookie Sanchez (and Kellen Clemens) replacing Brett Favre, there is absolutely zero chance the 2008 Jets win 9 football games.

As though any other QB in the league could have caused a loss in that week 6 game against Buffalo. Since every situation would change, for all we know if Sanchez wasn't such a worthless sack of garbage who put double pressure on the Jets D, then Kris Jenkins doesn't get injured that game. Seriously, how is it even possible for a QB to blow a game when your defense is showing up AND you get over 300 yards on the ground from your 2 RBs? Rex's fault.

About franchise QBs; there was a 21st century Fran Tarkenton available when the Jets drafted. And they took a safety. Now perhaps Manziel will suck. I dunno; hanging 600 yards on Bama strikes me as awfully good. And if Seattle is your argument why do you not take a guy who is measurably comparable to Russell Wilson? And has T0m has noted repeatedly, why does a defensive genius need every 1st round pick?

Dude, stop it. Just stop it. Stop trying to talk about odds or anything to do with math because this is 100% ******* false.

it's cocktail napkin math. my point is just wanting it and firing people every 5 years is not enough. Rex does what he does if the team can get better on offense (without his help) they can do something. If they fire him they have no offense AND no defense. How does that help their chances?

There is alot of truth in this post. Manziel would have been a great pick. I wonder if he really had Pryor graded out better. It would be an interesting fact that no one outside of that room will probably ever know.  I still think Houston made a mistake passing on Manziel so Im kinda biased about the whole thing.

What I think happened... don't believe that Pryor was a Rex pick. it was an Idzik pick trying to Earl Thomas the place up.

Rex could have wanted to trade up for Watkins... or taken Manziel... or maybe taken the corner probably. Rex doesn't get to make that pick (and he didn't make the Sanchez pick either).

But Idzik focused in on Pryor, and when guys get focused they can't process the fact there's a QB still on the board. Idzik also did not want to give up on Geno and that's what drafting Manziel does. It's understandable from his job security... it has to be a priority to make Geno turn out well.  Can't just burn 2nd round picks and keep your job forever.

Keeping Geno and not drafting Manziel is a classic example of shortsighted throwing good money after bad. It's the most important position and if you have a bad QB you wind up trying to make up for it everywhere else.Smith is a bad QB and the jets historically have wasted draft picks like most people change socks.

I personally totally agree but the contra case is Pryor starts and Manziel is playing on Cleveland's 3rd team right now.  If you draft first rounders that don't start it's hard to make the case that the team got better.
