Cimini's take: Trade Hill for a corner. Pryor the real deal.

On Hill:

If I were the Jets, I'd look to trade him for a cornerback. He might draw some interest because of his potential and his reasonable contract. Asked about Hill's lack of progress, Rex Ryan praised his blocking, akin to complimenting a blind date on her great personality.

On Pryor:

After a slow start because of a concussion, rookie safety Calvin Pryor is starting to assert himself. He's feeling frisky, and that was evident in practice, particularly when he jolted wide receiver Saalim Hakim on a crossing route. The Jets' first-round pick can expect a heavy workload Saturday night against the Cincinnati Bengals. He'll play a little with the starters, a lot with the backups and some with the backups' backups. "I think the guy has a chance to be big time," defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman said Tuesday.

Trading Quinton Coples would be the far better decision if we're doing a player for player swap.  He has value as a 4-3 end.  Hill has very little value in the trade market at the moment so we might as well see if the lightbulb can ever go on for him.  Just because we have a lot of bodies at WR doesn't mean we have depth there.

Tanny just took a job with some team, I think he's giving them advice on smoothie making and blockbuster trades. DO IT.

The Dolphags, right? That would be awesome.  Think they'll come off on Grimes for him?

That time he lit up Salim Hakim in practice tho

Why did you come back?

The site really was actually getting back to being a place you could have a decent Football conversation.

Did you see Babin trying to set the edge Thursday night?  No thank you.  Do you really want to go with Garrett McIntyre at OLB all year?

The Jets should be listening to all offers, but if they hear this one, they should turn it down.

If a guy like Enunwa is really making a push to start, then dangling Hill makes sense. At least to see if anyone wants to bite. Otherwise, with the depth they have on their DL, I'd move Ellis or Douzable for the right CB.

Not particularly but if we're going to put anyone on the block Coples makes the most sense.  I wouldn't take anything less than a solid # 2 corner for him though.

No, he doesn't.

He's the team's starter at OLB. They can trade backup DL that can start on other teams for a backup CB who can start on the Jets. That's how you get a deal done, by putting together a trade that helps both teams more than it hurts. Trading Coples would hurt. Losing their starting OLB for a starting CB is probably a net negative move for the Jets (depending, of course, on the CB). Losing a guy like Ellis or Douzable, though, would barely be noticed.

To channel my inner stoicsentry, where was Idzik back when it was a buyer's market? Pulling Patterson out of the scratch and dent section?

It never was a buyer's market.  Even with as many CB's available on the market as there were they were all getting paid ridiculous sums.  DRC got $8M per despite finding his way off of 3 different teams.  Alterraun Verner, pretty much a pure zoner corner, got $6.5M per.  And Vontae Davis, the guy who made the most sense, did not give Indy a hometown discount whatsoever.  He got $10M per.

The franchise number for CBs this year was just under $12M, it's a premium position. The only guy on the market who got more than was -surprise!- Revis. With Milliner looking pretty good, and only in the second year of his rookie deal, the Jets could've comfortably afforded a $10M/year guy on the other side. Which, for the position, isn't ridiculous.

This is precisely the logic that governed every decision Mike Tannenbaum ever made.

The market cap of $12M became a reality because of the Asomugha deal with Oakland.  Just because it set the bar high for the elite corners doesn't mean the CB's available this offseason were worth the coin they got.

We were looking to fill the # 2 CB spot, not the # 1 CB spot.  The money being given to 2nd-rate corners like DRC and Munnerlyn wasn't the kind of money Idzik was willing to throw around and rightly so.  Milliner was drafted to be our # 1 CB and it shouldn't require spending $7 or $8M at the other spot to make our defense successful.

Yeah, I'm not down on the vast majority of the guy's moves. I had no problem with going safety in the first round, I have no issues with the way he's trying to build the OL, and i didn't mind not taking a QB on the first couple days, etc. But at CB, I think he screwed up, Played it too conservative or took too much of a risk, however you want to look at it. They've got @ $25M in cap space right now. A $10M/year CB with a deal light on guaranteed money would not've hurt them this year or going forward - even if he didn't pan out.

So when Idzik was pursuing Davis, you don't think he was aware that he'd have to go over $7-8M/year? I think even he might disagree with you there.

Munnerlyn signed a three year, $11.25M deal. Outrageous.
