Michael Vick can't win.

He entered the offseason determined to land a starting job, only to be told by the New York Jets months after signing that the quarterback competition was rigged in Geno Smith's favor.

Vick came to grips with his role over the summer, fading into the background while offering unwavering support for Smith as the face of the Jets' offense.

Smith has always been viewed as general manager John Idzik's guy whereas some members of the coaching staff had visions of Vick running the offense.

In fact, some Jets coaches have "privately expressed disappointment that Vick didn't show up more hell-bent on winning the starting job," according to The MMQB's Jenny Vrentas. At the very least, they wanted Vick to make the decision tough for coach Rex Ryan, adds Vrentas.

That's interesting logic.

The coaching staff set Vick up for failure. Now they're holding it against him that he's accepting of his role as Smith's mentor and caddy.

"The last five years I spent in Philly, I had some great years and played in some great games and went through a lot," Vick explained. "Now it's an opportunity for me to refresh myself and take a step back away from the game."

Make no mistake, Vick wants to start. But he also understands that's not going to happen unless Smith falls flat on his face.

"I'm kind of relishing the moment that I'm in right now," Vick added. "I am not required to have to do a lot. Preserving my body right now is very important to me, and making sure I can make a strong push late in my career in case I am needed."

Vick has adopted the ideal attitude for a veteran backup, ready to shed the visor and clipboard at a moment's notice. If the Jets coaches wanted a more cut-throat Vick, they should should have opened the competition.

Who cares. It's better he knew his identified role on the team from the on set. Makes things easier if roles are established earlier. Then if things changes later on then fine.

I like Vick better knowing he knew the role from the start. I'm the #2 unless called upon. Way easier on players mentality across the board in team sports.

I have never seen more written about a non-story than what's been going on with Vick and Geno and the starting QB position.  It seems like every day there are 5-6 articles on the same thing lambasting Rex and Idzik for not naming a starter.  This has to be unique to the Jets and NY media, right?  This type of BS journalism can't possibly be going with other NFL teams can it? I don't think Pettine had to deal with this with Manziel/Hoyer.  I don't remember Parcells having to put up with this, so maybe its just a lack of respect toward Rex...

It's interesting how it's a story no matter what. If we have a bad backup (e.g. Brunell) then it's a story. If we have a good backup (e.g. Vick) then it's also a story.

I think this crap will continue until we have a QB that has established himself, whether that be Geno or the next guy up.

Meeting for writers:

Cimini: Who's got a controversy we can swirl up, this camp has been way too boring. I try to mention Tebow in every article I write but it doesn't have the same effect anymore.

Mehta: Well I lost my source, but I can just make something up.

Cimini: Mehta we all know you make stuff up we might have to go in a different direction this year, you've gone too far.

Vrentas: Oooh I think I got something. I might have heard from some coach or intern or something that MM and Rex wished Vick tried to get the starting job harder.

Cimini: Well that's crap, but lets turn it into a s**tstorm. Jenny you shouldn't write it we need someone else to write it for you so that it seems legitimate.

Wesseling: I'm not above trashing the Jets, I'll quote Vrentas

Cimini: Good let's make this bulls**t work.
