TaborJet
Is working for me. I started on Tuesday, and I'm down 6 lbs. I know, it's probably water weight in the beginning, but I did this diet a couple of years ago, and lost 20 lbs. in 2 weeks. It really works. Max, are you getting all this? Arsis
Bump for 2008! The Mrs. and I are starting this diet together again. The diet does work! The problem for us is sticking to it. No diet with a name works, it just doesn't. None of these diets have any scientific basis and they're generally bad for your health. You're just going to end up with the yo-yo effect of losing and gaining water weight. Instead of looking for a magic solution, you know what foods are good for you and which ones aren't. Use common sense and combine that with actual exercise and you'll see yourself losing weight and getting into shape.

Use common sense and combine that with actual exercise and you'll see yourself losing weight and getting into shape. South Beach is actually a very healthy diet/lifestyle to follow. This isn't the Grapefruit Diet, Hollywood Star diet or Cabbage diet... those 'named' diets are absurd. This is not Atkins that promotes fatty bacon, fatty meats, fried eggs and no carbs. That will clog your heart in a year. And you know there is no scientific basis because....? This diet was designed by a cardiologist who is the professor of medicine at the University of Miami. Our bodies are fine-tuned machines... that are not so fine-tuned because of all the crap out there we consume. Self-admitted, I ate the trans fats, I ate the pizza and the fried chicken, and the innocent looking baked crackers loaded with calories, etc. I ate it. But this diet is all about consuming the right carbs, proteins and fats... something a lot of people are oblivious to or can't easily do in today's hurried world. This diet is an approach that is very achievable and doable long term if committed to it. You are getting plenty of energy and all the proper nutrition you need. Anyone who has ever struggled with a weight problem knows it's so much more than eating in moderation and getting in some exercise. If there was a magic bullet, I would have sold my first born for it.

JerryK
My dad has been on Atkins for years. He always "started yesterday". The food network has a guy who does low-carb cooking. He's about 30lbs overweight. The show's in it's 2nd year. He's still about 30lbs overweight. I have about 40lbs to lose, but I'm not going to start until I have time to commit to a gym for 10 weeks. IMO, a decision to start a diet is a decision to avoid exercise.
Sperm Edwards
20 lbs in 2 weeks? Enjoy your gallstones. See a doctor and a nutritionist if you're losing weight anywhere near that rate. Not everyone's body reacts to deprivation of certain things quite the same. Mrs.T in particular should worry about long-term osteoporosis with a diet like this. For either of you - you're better off staying a little overweight than losing it & gaining it back & repeating the cycle. You will die of heart disease. In the end, use your own common sense. Personally, I wouldn't follow any diet that says eating french fries & bacon is ok, but I should avoid apples & oranges.

I would think me being in shape would make me more qualified to speak about it not less. I don't really have any before pictures but I was once 270 lbs once in my life which is about 70lbs overweight for my height. All I did was find out how many calories my body with it's current weight needed to function and ate 500 less calories a day(avoiding excess fatty foods and simple carbs) and jogged for 20-40 minutes a day 5 times a week and the weight came off at a very healthy pace. Most of these diets you're not going to be able to follow for the rest of your life. As soon as you stop following the diet you're going to gain the weight back. The gaining and losing weight cycle is one of the worst things for your body.

I usually stay within 10-15lb's of being in shape in the winter. and I always lose it in the summer because I'm more active and I sweat more. I'm about 220lb's right now. if I get to 200lb's I start to get ripped, not just skinny. I don't try and lose it in 2 weeks. more like 6 weeks to 2 months. BTW..good for you, that's a lot of weight you had to lose.

The first pounds come off easily, mainly because you are losing water weight first. I know you are joking when you mention eating french fries. They are not on the diet. And the only bacon is turkey bacon, which we don't eat all the time. Lean meats and veggies.

I know you are joking when you mention eating french fries. They are not on the diet. And the only bacon is turkey bacon, which we don't eat all the time. Lean meats and veggies. I'm not joking about someone who should see a nutritionist when losing that much water that quickly. You should have blood work done & shown to a nutritionist (or a doctor who actually knows) to determine if this type of diet is safe for you. For many, particularly those who go on & off this diet as they gain/lose weight, this is not nice to your heart to say the least. He doesn't mention this in his book, though he clearly should know it as a cardiologist. He does advocate Canadian bacon, 2 slices of which is even higher in sodium & cholesterol than 2 slices of (cooked) regular/fatty bacon; also about the same number of calories, and nearly as much saturated fat (1.4g vs 2.1g). While regular bacon is probably close to the worst food you can eat health-wise, Canadian bacon is hardly "healthy" either. And on page 54 he states that French fries and potato chips are healthier choices than baked potatoes because of the "fat in which they're cooked." Check out a lot of info - there's plenty available online - about it & don't only look for advocates of this or any other "trend" diet (or from the author himself).
