Cimini & HC Odds

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the next Jets coach is...

Possible replacements for Herm Edwards and the odds they'll get the job: Mike Sherman (7-1): Former Packers coach enjoyed five straight winning seasons before the bottom fell out this year. Warning to reporters: Silence your cell phones.

Jim Haslett (10-1): Ex-Saints coach knows adversity and turmoil, so he'd fit right into the Jets' culture. His New Orleans teams were known for underachieving.

Mike Heimerdinger (12-1): The Jets' top in-house candidate. He was dealt a bad hand last season because of the injuries on offense. Owner Woody Johnson is said to be reluctant to promote 'Dinger.

Al Saunders (15-1): Dick Vermeil's offensive guru in Kansas City. GM Terry Bradway knows Saunders from his K.C. days. A Herm Edwards for Saunders trade?

Jim Fassel (17-1): He went to a Super Bowl and knows how to handle New York, but Jets could be wary of a recycled Giants coach.

Donnie Henderson (20-1): Fiery coach can get a defense to run through a brick wall, but might be too high-strung to manage an organization.

Cam Cameron (22-1): The Jets have a lot of respect for the way he has coordinated the Chargers' offense. Too bad he couldn't bring L.T. along with him.

Maurice Carthon (25-1): A Bill Parcells guy who was interviewed by Bradway in 2001. Carthon has paid his dues and might be ready to move up.

Eric Mangini (25-1): Patriots defensive coordinator is a chip off the 'ol Belichick. Former Jets assistant is one of the top young coaches in the NFL. Turns 35 next week; Jon Gruden was only 34 when he got his start with the Raiders.

Joe Vitt (25-1): A Bradway crony, took over for ailing Mike Martz midseason and won four of 11 games with Rams.

Marty Schottenheimer (25-1): Chargers coach is also close to Bradway and may be on the outs with his GM in San Diego.

If you go the retread route go Fassel.

If you go with a 1st timer go with Mangini.

Or you could stay in house and go with Dinger or Hendu..I'm so happy the BBQ Man is gone I think anyone is a improvement..But with TB still the GM Tags just may have another AA Candidate waiting in the wings..I wouldn't mind the Mangina though..

I do not want a coach that has already failed in New York. If we go with a retread, I'd rather it be Mike Martz. We need an offensive coach and a coach that is great at developing young quarterbacks. I think Martz is a arrogant, egotistical prick, but he has done a great job with Marc Bulger. Martz also sat down an aging Marshall Faulk in favor of the young stud. On the flip side, I have seen games where poor decisions by Martz cost the Rams victories.

As for a first timer, Ferentz, Kubiak, Rivera, or Mangini would be A-Ok with me.

i don't like martz because his teams are very reckless with the football. maybe in october vs the cards you can do that but in the playoffs martz teams always seams to turn it over WAY too much.

I'm leaning towards Fassel because:

1. He can put a staff together, efficiently.

2. He can make a proper assessment on the damage Herm left behind.

Mangini because:

Great pedigree.

I don't want any ex-players like Carthon. They end up trying to be "one of the fellas" and I've seen as much of that crap as I want to see in a lifetime.

I wouldn't touch Jim Haslet with a 25ft pole.

Talk about getting nothing but inconsistant play from your team.

He would be the worst HC choice out there.

i couldn't agree more man. his teams GAG in december too. i think they had 3 years in a row where they had chances to get themselves in the playoffs but gagged vs bad teams in december.

That's dead-on. In the past five years, I have seen Haslett coach more than any other coach besides Edwards. Haslett basically IS Herm, minus Hermy's love affair with the media. Haslett's Saints were notorious for their weak starts and hot finishes. They were even more inconsistent than the Jets. The only thing that managed to do consistently was manage to just avoid making the playoffs. Haslett also kept Mike McCarthy at offensive coordinator for years. McCarthy, of course, is a Hackett disciple. I don't even remember if Haslett was the Steelers' offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator before latching on to the Saints. That's because he appeared to not do much of anything.

If we hire Jim Haslett, I may not watch a Jets game next season.

Its hard to call fassel a "failure" . He took his team to the super bowl....in my book thats better than jusy making a few playoff games

"Offensive guru" Jim Fassel went 60-56-1 in seven seasons with the Giants, including a trip to the Super Bowl in which they were completely blown off the field. Other than that, he was 2-3 in the playoffs (Sound familiar?), and this great offensive mind's Giants highest finish in points per game was in their Super Bowl year, where they finished FIFTEENTH.

Pass.

Jim Haslett (10-1)

That makes me want to puke.

His resume...

2000 nor | 10 6 0 | 1 1 |

2001 nor | 7 9 0 | 0 0 |

2002 nor | 9 7 0 | 0 0 |

2003 nor | 8 8 0 | 0 0 |

2004 nor | 8 8 0 | 0 0 |

2005 nor | 3 13 0 | 0 0 |

Playoffs only in 2000.
