Bill Parcells has 'a high regard' for new Jets head coach Todd Bowles

Bill Parcells began our phone conversation by apologizing. Parcells, the Hall of Fame former Giants and Jets head coach, is described in the 2014 Cardinals' media guide as "one of [Todd] Bowles' mentors." Bowles, officially hired Wednesday as the Jets' head coach, had worked under Parcells three different times as Bowles climbed the coaching ranks in the last 20 years. Bowles, an Elizabeth native, had spent the last two seasons as the Cardinals defensive coordinator before the Jets plucked him to take over for Rex Ryan. I had left Parcells a pair of phone messages on Wednesday. When he finally called me back in the evening, he politely explained that he had gotten 20 or so requests from other reporters looking for anecdotes and color about Bowles. So rather than take any questions that would lead to him spinning yarns and staying on the phone a while, he offered up a few quick comments about Bowles instead. Bowles had played safety for Washington from 1986-90, then again from 1992-93 after spending the '91 season with the 49ers. He later worked for Parcells as a defensive backs coach with the Jets in 2000 (when Parcells was general manager), Cowboys (2005-07, when Parcells was the head coach), and Dolphins (2008-10, when Parcells was executive vice president of football operations). So there are lots of ties between the two men. Which is why, ever so briefly, Parcells just said a few words about how much he thinks of Bowles. "I have a high regard for Todd Bowles," Parcells said. "He has a lot of experience as a coach and as a player. And when I played against him—I was coach the Giants when he was a safety with the Redskins; he was running the Redskins' secondary, really, and making all the calls, and I noticed that. "I also worked with him in three different places—the Jets, Cowboys, and Dolphins—and I think he's a highly intelligent guy. I think he'll do well."
