Coach Bill Belichick on Thursday acknowledged that he was "shocked" this week to learn of the NFL's investigation of overly deflated footballs allegedly used by the Patriots during the AFC title game.

Addressing a swarm of reporters, Belichick addressed the controversy with a prepared statement:

"When I came in Monday morning, I was shocked to learn of the news reports about the footballs. I had no knowledge whatsoever of this situation until Monday morning.

"I would say I learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than I knew or had talked about it in the last 40 years that I've coached in this league.

"I had no knowledge of the various steps involved in the game balls and the process that went through -- that happened between -- when they were prepared and went to the officials and went to the game, so I learned a lot about that.

"I obviously understand that each team has the opportunity to prepare the balls the way they want. Give them to the officials and the game officials either approve or disapprove the balls, and that really was the end of it for me, until I learned a little more about this the last couple days."

Belichick went on to say that his personal coaching philosophy has always been to make conditions as "tough as possible" for players in practice. He insisted that any current or past player of his would attest that the footballs the team practices with are "as bad as they can be," and "however bad we can make them, I make them, and any time the players complain about the quality of the footballs, I make them worse."

Said Belichick: "We never use the condition of the footballs as an excuse."

Belichick argued that quarterbacks, kickers and specialists have certain preferences on footballs and "know a lot more about it than I do, and are a lot more sensitive to it than I am," adding that "there is never any sympathy whatsoever from me on that subject -- zero."

Talking of his star quarterback, Belichick said of Tom Brady: "Tom's personal preferences on his footballs are something that he can talk about in much better detail and information than I could possibly provide."

Belichick repeatedly denied "any explanation" of what happened to his team's footballs against the Colts.

"I can tell you that in my entire coaching career, I have never talked to any player, staff member about football air pressure. That is not a subject that I have ever brought up," Belichick said. "To me, the footballs are approved by the league and game officials pregame, and we play with what's out there. And that's the only way that I have ever thought about that."

Belichick promised the team would "take steps in the future" to ensure the Patriots don't find themselves in the same situation again, before noting that the franchise has "cooperated fully, quickly and completely with every request" of the league's investigation.

The coach went so far as to say that he has "never touched a game ball, that's not something that I have any familiarity with," reiterating that the entire controversy was a mystery to him until Monday morning, while saying: "I really can't think of anything that I would have done differently based on what I knew then."

"I have no explanation for what happened," Belichick said. "And that's what they're looking into."

I never used performance enhancing drugs.  Everyone's head expands as they grow older.  It;s a natural part of the aging process.

It was B12 he was injecting into my arse.

"Overly deflated"  That just sounds weird.

He could be telling the truth. But when you foster an environment of cutting corners and cheating, you can't be surprised when others in the organization get in on the act. Just this morning the Patriots dietician was spotted on a security video at a quick-e-mart near the practice facilities.

I am normally a huge benefit of the doubt type of guy, but is there a fan of the NFL out there anywhere that actually believes BB knows nothing of the specific rules surrounding the proper inflation of the football?  He didn't say he has only a rudimentary knowledge of this particular rule, he seemed like he was surprised that there even was a rule!  Hell, I knew there was the rule years ago, not what the specific pressure was, but the fact that there was one!  This is a guy who has developed and relished in his reputation of knowing all facets of the game and exploiting any subtle nuance within, or outside of the rules in an effort to gain a competitive edge.  Here is the bottom line, he may know more about football and the rules than any other human being on the planet alive or dead, but his cold fish, antisocial personality and limited ability to interact with other humans is his downfall because he cannot articulate his stance or provide a decent self defense of his clearly subversive techniques.  He is socially inept and that is what will lead him into the lion's den.  Brady is equally as guilty, but he at least has a minute ability to be human and speak freely on a subject, which may help him in the long run.

I was really bummed last weekend.  The Packers lost in heart breaking fashion and even though I am not a great fan of their's  I felt bad for the guys who blew such a winnable game and imagined if if the Jets had lost like that.  Then the Patsies destroyed the Colts and I thought that this was the most miserable football season I had ever seen.  Monday morning came and this story about deflated footballs made me chuckle but I didn't think it would be that big a deal.  Now as this thing has exploded and I watch the fall out with Belly squirming and Brady about to be called to the carpet I can forget about world terrorism, global warming, stagnant wages and other assorted problems and just escape to revel in the fantastic sh!tstorm that is engulfing the most hated franchise in all of sports.  It couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of a-holes and I am enjoying the hell out of it.  I only hope it is capped off with a gigantic beat down of New England in the Super Bowl by the Seahawks.  It makes me feel that maybe people do sometimes get what they deserve in this world.

I could almost believe him if he said he didn't know anything about it Monday when the story broke, but what about over the last 3 days?  Are we to believe that he didn't ask Brady or the ball boy what the hell is going on?  It is so ridiculous to believe that after 3 days he wouldn't find out what is going on with his team if he really didn't know about it ahead of time.

My wife is from Boston and all friends familiy still up there - anywho she told me its the talk of the town up there and there is some reporter to is claiming it is a known "fact" that every team video taped hand signals....blah blah blah

Thought that was funny some of the stuff they saying up there to make themselves feel better

these are some of the other arguements

"How do we know when the balls got deflated"

Its all Belicheck fault not Brady (i tho that one was interesting)

They dont believe the balls were deflated at all

everyone is just jealous

there is just a tit for tat going on because the patriots accused Jets etc...

crazy stuff they saying...basically anything and everything to discredit anything bad about the pats...I think it is quite comical.

So how's this for a scandal.... Bellicheat say he doesn't know anything about what's going on and doesn't worry about balls. Kinda said you'd have to ask Tommy how he likes his balls. Then Tommy comes on his news conf and says he is responsible for his balls, but he tells Bellicheat everything....

one can only hope lol...

Tom Brady does anything he wants with the footballs. He doesnt need to run it by bellichek.

This is all on brady, not the coach.

You are wrong if you think Bill isn't in the know about everything that's going on, especially the things that create advantage by breaking rules.
