Trading Down (Draft Day)

Recommended Posts

In my opinion having the number 6 pick in the draft makes it a certainty that we'll negotiate a trade with the Browns.  Do you think it would be at all possible to land both their 12th and 19th overall picks by only giving up the number 6th overall and a later round pick (hopefully 4th-7th rounder) ?

I'd rather the jets take an elite player for once instead of relinquishing that right just to get a couple of good players. If we don't like Mariota, take Cooper or White and don't think twice.

There are no guarantees in the draft that any player will be elite in the NFL. By multiplying picks and trading down you increase your chances of getting a few top level players.

Stay at the top of the draft and take an elite player.

One of the following: an elite pass rusher (Fowler, Ray), a blue chip offensive lineman (Scherff), a game changing receiver (White, Cooper) will be available at #6. Take one and call it a night.

I used to love talking about trading down. In the last ten years we really dont do it. This is a new GM so theres hope but I wouldn't count on it.

You see very few 1st round trades...especially when QB's aren't involved...

And if the QB is there at 6 you have to take him...

Yea a perfect example of this (so far even though it's still early) is the draft two years ago with Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson.

Dee hasn't exactly lived up to expectations but I think Sheldon has been pretty good for us.

Browns have 12 & 19. Eagles have #20... just sayin....

There's no way a 6 equals out to a 12th and 20th. They also have the 19th, not the 20th. And this "certainty" stuff is delusional, but I like your confidence. LOL

Leap frogging 6 spots from 12 to 6 would involve a swap of the pics and probably a 3rd rounder this year or as BEST, next years 2nd.

I usually love the idea of trading down. But after 12 players last year, who still have the jury out on them, I rather see our new GM, who is a scouting expert (I have heard) use the #6 pick in each round and show us what he and our new scouting department has got.

If we were to throw in a 4th + 5th and let's just theoretically say that Mariota is on the board there.  IF the Browns really want him they could possibly be talked into giving up both their first rounders.

Mariota is not the perfect prospect.

But anyone that follows the draft knows this:

1- You do not draft high enough to get a chance at a Franchise QB yearly.

2- When you get a chance at a Franchise guy - and you dont have one: You can't pass it up.

Last year Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater both had warts. Minn and Oakland look brilliant now. And with how cheap draftpicks are now if Mariota sucks you can simply cut him or get a new guy in two years - just like we did with Geno.

Better chance of getting an elite player with two picks instead of one and you could end up with two elite players.

Ehh, I disagree. There's a better chance of getting an elite player when you pick at that top, not in the middle or bottom.

Yeah but that takes a huge backseat to learning how to win with meaningless games in December.

It's about the same. Look back just in the 2000s.

Why the hell would the Browns move up to #6? Unless Winston is available this makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I wouldn't mind us trading down. Trading down to the mid 1st round and pick up an additional 2nd round pick maybe if "our guy" isn't there at #6.
