Schefter: Bills Trade for Shady McCoy

That's fine. I'm not trying to come across as though this is grossly imbalanced. I think what tilts it in favor of Philly is that McCoy's numbers can be replaced and they had no Kiko, so it improves them at a need position with a guy with more football left in his career and a better cap number.

Buffalo takes on a huge cap hit, a player whose best season already happened and literally did nothing but replace the numbers they already had coming from RB. Just with one player, as opposed to a committee. Meanwhile, Alonso added into the mix on that defense might have actually helped perpetuate the mirage that Rex is somehow improving an already great defense.

I think I'm mostly amused by Buffalo becoming a dumping ground for Chip Kelly's unwanted RBs.

If McCoy is still the player he was for 3 more years, this is a good deal for them. But that's a big if

I think McCoy makes that offense the same, frankly. I think the combination of Fred Jackson and Spiller and whoever else is on par with McCoy and whoever else has to spell him. Same numbers. It gives the Bills a better fantasy running back though.

For the fact that McCoy can actually stay on the field I will give him the advantage, but I see you point.

Agreed.

I'm saying all this after having watched him last year. He looked spent, like his workload from 2 years ago when he was super-stud, spent his legs (and vision).

I was just reading that Chip Kelly was using Sproles as the receiving back and Chris Polk as the goal line back. McCoy went from 5+ YPC to 4.2.

Yeah, he phased him out. They also plucked Kenjon Barner off the Carolina P-squad didn't they?

Bills D was ranked 3rd last year without Kiko. They just got a top 5 RB in the league. Bills got better period.

lol, nevermind the fact that are installing a completely different defense. Yeah.

Jets suck vs speed backs. When we played Charles/McCoy and they run that stretch play more then often we're screwed.

Jets aren't running Rex's defense anymore. Forget what you know about how we used to get chewed up by teams with fast players at teh line of scrimmage.

Another good point. I was just looking at it from the perspective of having him in the passing game and how effective that would be against our slow linebackers. Granted, Davis is fast but he's not really that great in coverage unless he's blowing up the screen game.

Interesting trade a couple of things if you're BUF:

- How much tread does McCoy have left on his tires?
He's touched the ball over 700 times over the past two
years

- Why trade a talented, young LB on his rookie contract who
already proved he can play in Ryan's defense?  Remember in
Alonso's rookie year he played for Pettine

- If you wanted to get an RB to make a "splash" why not go
after DeMarco Murray?  That way all you give up is $$$ and
you keep Alonso

- Is Ryan actually planning to replace a young, talented and
fast LB with David Harris???

Also let's stop projecting what our defense did in the past under Ryan to

what we're going to do under Bowles.  Yes we had certain issues that

continued to plague us under Ryan that doesn't mean they'll continue to

haunt us going forward

The Bills will be the Jets in 2009. #1 overall D. #1 running game and a playoff run.

Seriously dude, stop pretending to be a Jet fan! Rex just traded for a RB making 11 million dollars!

With a draft coming up loaded with RBs?

F*cking brainless!

It's not that easy. You have to include all variables in order to get the real truth.  Money, need, the attitude of a player, the available talent etc all have an effect here.

The problem is that I don't believe the Bills brass are including all variables. They're excited to get a ground and pounder.

Straight up in a non inclusive world, I may choose Mccoy, but it's not that easy.

He traded the DROY runner up two years ago for an $11 mil Rb in a year where a very good RB can be had up until rd 4 or so.  Not good management.

Add to that that it's most likely including rex's boner for Harris and it's that much more blind of a move.

Of coarse it's not that easy. It's just a simple question to say who doe you think is overall more valuable. Just for discussion. Obviously all the variables need to be considered.

Well, McCoy is 26 years old and has not shown any signs whatsoever of slowing down so I think the Bills will get about 3 years out of him. Kiko didnt prove that he can play in a Rex Ryan defense because he never played for Rex Ryan, though I think Kiko is a fine player. But when you get a season ending injury and someone basically can in on a "plug and play" and the defense ended up as one of the top defenses in the league, when a guy who doesnt get injured and looks to be at the top of his game is available for trade, then you do it especially if you need help on that side of the ball. McCoy is a better answer than Spiller. You dont go Demarco Murray because Murray is a one year guy. Murray hasn't had the career that McCoy has had, and he's not as durable, playing an entire season for the first time this year. That would be a "splash" but not as smart as this.

How you replace Kiko? Draft maybe? I told someone earlier that I think along with the WR's, the linebacker crop this year is pretty nice. If the Bills draft Paul Dawson in the 2nd round then they have their replacement right there.

By the time they pick in the second the top 3 (possibly 4) RB will be off the board. By round 3 no telling if any high upside RBs will be left.

What QB is taking the Bills to the Super Bowl? I must have missed that signing.

In my honest opinion, the Bills were better off keeping Kiko, resigning Spiller, and going from there. LeSean has a massive CAP number, a ton of mileage and is reportedly already incredibly unhappy. The Eagles just freed up a ton of CAP space, got an absolute STUD linebacker, and can replace McCoy in FA or the draft with a younger and cheaper player with less wear and tear.

This move is a major win for the Eagles. McCoy was set to count against the Eagles cap at $11.95 million while earning a $10.25 million salary. Neither number should ever occur for a running back in today’s NFL and it is possible that McCoy would have been released had he refused a pay cut. If the Eagles had released him they would have owed McCoy $1 million, the amount of his salary that was guaranteed for the year. Instead they get a young linebacker in return who will earn $795,946 for the season. This will clear about $7.75 million from the Eagles salary cap this season.

For the Bills they will now take on $10.25 million in cap and cash obligations for McCoy, essentially eating up 1/3 of their projected cap room. One would expect the Bills to immediately rework his contract for more cap relief. McCoy has three years remaining on his contract. He will earn a total of $15 million in the final two years of his contract, though none of that is guaranteed. I would expect the team to add two more seasons to the deal to maximize the cap savings.

It is a large price to pay for a running back especially one who struggled at times in two of the last three seasons when his offensive line played poorly. The Bills offensive line is a trouble spot for the team and they will need to upgrade significantly to make this work. The Bills declined usin the franchise tag on pass rusher Jerry Hughes, which may have been an indication that the money was needed for the offense. The team already signed Richie Incognito to play guard, but arguably need three more lineman to allow the running game to excel.

The move will likely mark the end of CJ Spillers career with the Bills and could spell the end of veteran Fred Jackson’s. Releasing Jackson would save the team $2.7M in cap room. Spiller is a free agent.

No trade can be made official until the first day of the NFL League Year so its possible that the trade could never happen if someone gets cold feet, but it sure sounds like it will happen.  The Eagles will have well over $40 million in cap space to use to improve the team and should be expected to be a big player in free agency.

Exactly!!! If they let McCoy go Foles is def available. We need to pull the trigger NOW. We will attract way more free agents with a real QB at the helm.

As for the trade. Alonzo is completely unproven. Coming off a major injury. Yes, he's one hell of a talent and he's cheap for the next 2 years. But trading a guy who could easily be the best RB in the game, straight up, for a potential one year wonder coming off a major injury sounds like a coach who was given too much power playing madden with a real franchise.

Hope he does the same sh*t with us and Foles. LOL

Well, if what Chip wants and is crazy as hell about is Mariota, we can't pull any trigger now.  We have to wait til the 6th pick comes up, hope Mariota is there, and then pull the trigger (and also be ready to actually draft Mariota).

But hey, maybe he's crazy enough to trade him for less than that.  Would anyone here trade Snacks for Foles?

Not so fast!

In response to the report that the Eagles will ship running back LeSean McCoy to the Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso, agent Drew Rosenhaus contends that the deal isn’t done yet.

“I just spoke with the Eagles organization and there is no trade for LeSean at this time,” Rosenhaus said on Twitter.  “There have been discussions but nothing finalized.”

Nothing can be finalized until Tuesday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. ET.  So the information the Eagles provided to Rosenhaus is correct, even if the two teams have struck a deal in principle.

Even if an agreement has been reached between the two teams, either side can back out.  If McCoy makes it clear that he’s not on board with the deal, the Bills may not want him.  So, basically, stay tuned.

If Rex was a big part of this decision I guarntee you are asking way more questions then he did.

Whaley:Rex, McCoy for Alonzo?

Rex: Who's Alonzo again, I've been busy shooting dominos pizza commercials and Adam Sandler movies, haven't gotten around to the roster yet.

Whaley: He's a brillant young LB who is coming off a major injury.

Rex: And, McCoy is that guy from Philly... right?

Whaley: Yes (SMH)

Rex: Let me ask you this... who has the catchier nickname?

Whaley: Shady McCoy .... by far.

Rex: Well, you just answered your own question didn't you?

Whaley: I guess so (puts gun to head, cocks the hammer)

Rex: (goes back to youporn.com)

Ummmmmmmm hell yes!

It just is. You must be absolutely out of your mind if you disagree.

It just is. I see. Kind of like when Rex chose scrub azz Geno to start the season over Vick.  That was his choice. I don't think Rex has the input power like Chip Kelly does. Overall, two great players trade places but it doesn't make sense for the Bills who could have just resigned Spiller and kept Kiko, who is a phenom in the making.  Rex is a defensive coach. I cant see him signing off on this.  And yes you are right - I am out of my mind. In Buddhist philosophy, one strives to be out of his mind. It is when one is in ones mind that he is not in touch with reality and is obsessed with his own thoughts.  Ever see a  guy walking down the street talking to himself. He aint on a cell phone. He's wrapped up in his mind.   Absolutely out of my mind. Yes I am. Thanks for the compliment.

I happened to be watching NFL Total Access on NFL network live & their guest tonight was the one & only CJ Spiller!

It was surreal!

CJ finds out while he's on the show! So they start talking about teams where CJ can land & Solomon Wilcox says, "I know a place where your old coach Chan Gailey is coaching".

It was funny & CJ had a HUGE smile on his face & said "had my best year under Chan"

I'll take a MOTIVATED CJ trying to burn his old team.
