Doctoring Balls...

Recommended Posts

So pitcher Will Smith of the Brewers gets an 8 game suspension for doctoring baseballs but NE fans are up in arms because Brady doctored the footballs and got to play in the AFC championship game and SB?

I believe Wil Smith was ejected immediately in that game as was pine tar neck Pineda. There is really no difference here. Both were altering the device used by both teams to play the game. And it's not about o everyone does it. The fact remains that said person got caught in an AFC championship game. And he's supposedly the greatest qb of all time.

The comparison doesn't hold water simply due to the fact that an 8 game suspension in baseball is the equivalent to a 1 game ban in the NFL, and Brady got 4.  If Will Smith was punished like Brady he would've gotten a 40 game ban.  Plus, that 8 game ban for a pitcher is only like 2 games since the 5 days rest.

So you mean to say Brady should have been suspended for the ONE game immediately. That game would have been the SUper Bowl.

The Pats got away with a little more than a slap of the wrist and were able to win a Super Bowl because of their cheating. There is no way they get by the Ravens without deflation.

This.  The biggest travesty of the whole mess is that he cheated in a Championship game was allowed to participate in the SuperBowl.

No, I did not mean to say that Brady should have been suspended for 1 game.

I'm saying the suspensions in MLB and NFL are apples and oranges.

That said, yes, Brady should've been suspended for the Super Bowl, especially since he cheated in the AFC title game.

Perhaps the Colts had less of a case with their 2nd half performance against the Patriots but certainly the Ravens would have had a case that doctored balls may very well have influenced the outcome of that game the week before.  Anyone in the playoffs could have made the case that a season of ball doctoring was the only reason that the Pats had home field advantage to begin with.

Given what we know now, the commissioner should really have benched Brady immediately and since they were not in a position at that time to know what we do now, the end result, a Patriots Superbowl, has inflicted even more damage to the integrity of the game.  Cheaters cheated and they won because the cheating could not be established quickly enough.

Unlike others here I am actually pretty sure Belichick knew about the ball pressure modifications and that this nugget will come out eventually.  When it does I think the limit of any additional punishment to the Patriots will be difficult to calculate. Bringing the game into disrepute does not even begin to cover it.

Never understood the morality in this argument. 'Yeah, they cheated, but they won by so much it didn't matter...'

That's like 'The bulls got to shoot on a 9 ft rim the first half but they won by 25 so it doesn't matter'.

Huh?

Your logic is not correct.

An eight game pitching suspension would be equal to 25 = 50+ games that he's being suspended from, based on rotation. That would be equal to a four-game suspension in the NFL.

Please stop trying to manipulate the difference between baseball and football.

Agreed, it a one argument in a long list of dopey arguments presented by Pats fans with the intent in this case to deflect from the real issues at hand.  The trick with this one is simply not to get trapped into litigating it at all except on laps two or three after the real debates have been settled.

I am just astonished by the assumption of Pats fans to think that anyone would feel that the Patriots would try out a new form of cheating for the very first time in the AFC championship game.  If you do not make such an assumption (and only an idiot would do so) then you only have to go back seven days to find a game whose outcome was on a razor's edge until the last few seconds.

Is it a reasonable question to ask when they started deflating?

Or are we still expected to take their word that they did not cheat?  Is that a reasonable thing for them to ask the public to do? To take their word for it

I think we can be pretty sure they cheated in the 2009 season. Watch the highlights from their 2009 Titans game:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81382f02/Patriots-59-Titans-0

Any honest person who watched that game will notice something was really amiss. The Titans are fumbling all over the place while the Cheats don't fumble at all. You'll notice that Brady is taking snaps from shotgun, doing gimmick plays like flea flickers, and has a record setting day while Collins, taking snaps from under center, was throwing interceptions, and was 2-12 in pass attempts.

This game also indicates to me that the coaching knows very well about the ball being deflated. Calling for a flea flicker in a game like that? C'mon...

In good weather Peyton Manning and Brady's stats are very similar. However in cold weather, Brady's passer rating is a respectable 91.4% while Manning drops down to 68.8%. Basically all other QBs show similar drops in performance like Manning in crappy weather except Brady Weird, huh?

It's also interesting that Brady's receivers drop their passes 3x less than Manning's.

http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/79050/tom-brady-thrives-in-new-england-weather

Brady is either immune to cold weather or he cheats.

We already know one of these to be true.

You are dead wrong.  SMC is correct.  When a pitcher is suspended for 8 games, that means 8 of his team's games, not 8 starts, which means 1 or 2 starts depending on the rotation and schedule.  Oftentimes, pitchers will temporarily appeal a suspension and then drop the appeal right after starting a game so that they only end up missing one start.  A healthy starting pitcher usually starts at least 30 games a year.  So an 8-game suspension for an MLB pitcher is basically a slap on the wrist.  The immediate ejection is actually much harsher as it can cause the team to burn through bullpen arms.

Less fumbles, easier ball to throw

Not in the case of Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens. Their suspension was based on rotation not on actual physical games. that is what I'm basing evaluation on.

They cheated in far more games than just the AFC title game. This has been gong on for a long time.

It's pretty self-evident that they have been doing this since 2007. When Spygate stopped, Deflategate started up.

It's also why they can never point to the success they had after Spygate and claim it didn't make a difference.

But Will Smith got suspended 8 games which is 8 games of 162, not 8 starts. You're simply incorrect when it comes to Smith's suspension.

So in no way was I manipulating anything because you were simply mistaken with the Smith suspension. Same thing happened with Pineda. He got 10 games for pine tar which were only 2 starts.

So in any other sport. If the player was found to be cheating. He's ejected immediately. But for some reason the NFL needed an investigation for this.

The qbs are responsible for the balls. So pretty easy to find the culprit. Especially when your tipped off a head of time. In my opinion the penalty should of been ejection from that game. End of story. Than none of this would even be a story right now.

When umpires are made to make that call immediately on the mound. NFL refs can do the same.

Thats not what he said.  He was addressing the OP who was trying to show that a baseball pitcher was punished harsher for a similar violation because he got 8 games and Brady only received a 4 game suspension

Give him a positive rep. I hope you have enough going on in your life to not pick up unwanted confrontations on the webz. If you have an original football point let me know. Otherwise you are wasting my time whining about your bruised vagina.

Get a grip on yourself, you were the one whining about something I wrote. Not the other way around. Not only are you a whiney twat but a delusional one. Something tells me you have no life to waste, seem quite interested in telling people what and how to post in a forum. Move on
