flgreen
Geno Smith on ranking as NFL's worst QB: 'I laugh at that' July 29, 2015 2:35 PM By KIMBERLEY A. Photo Credit: Andrew Theodorakis ADVERTISEMENT | ADVERTISE ON NEWSDAY FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Geno Smith just shrugged and smiled. For the second straight offseason, he was ranked the NFL's worst quarterback in a recent ESPN poll of 35 NFL insiders, including league executives and coaches. But the Jets signal-caller simply waved off the criticism on Wednesday. "I laugh at that," Smith said hours after he and his teammates reported to the team's New Jersey practice facility for training camp. "I laugh at it. It's hilarious. "It was hilarious last year, too," he added. "It doesn't matter at this point. We've got to work on us as a team. That's why I hate to talk about individual stuff because it's a team game. No matter what they rate me, wherever we finish at the end of the year is most important." Smith would rather not focus on his past struggles. Instead, he would rather look to the future -- one that, he believes, is bright thanks to the roster additions of receiver Brandon Marshall and cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. But in order for the Jets to be playoff-bound in 2015, they'll need quality quarterback play. And if Smith expects to keep his starting job against veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, he has to be on his game. And, according to him, he will be. "I just think I've been improving overall," said Smith, who is 11-18 as a starter and has committed 41 turnovers the past two seasons. "Going into my third year, I'm definitely a different player that I was when I came in. Definitely a different guy. So, I think the biggest thing is that I continue to improve and I continue to work hard and keep the same mindset so that I can eventually reach my ultimate goal. "I expect to do well," Smith said. "I expect our team to do well. and I understand that it takes a lot of work. It takes a lot of hard work." Asked specifically how he's gotten better as an NFL quarterback, Smith pointed to his age. "Well, for one I'm older," said the 24-year-old. "I've just got a lot more experience, a lot more things that I know. You don't know what you don't know, I guess you could say that. I've learned a lot over the course of these two or three years and I'm just getting better overall. I think I have a better understanding of what's expected. With that being said, I just want to go out there and continue to lead."
NJ
Geno Smith on ranking as NFL's worst QB: 'I laugh at that' I'd love to laugh at that. I'd be in position to if he wasn't the incumbent starting QB on the team I root for.
FidelioJet
Yeah, it's not all that funny. It's hard to argue - if he's not the worst he's certainly close.

peekskill68
What exactly do people want him to say? People would find something wrong with any answer he gave. As a general rule people hate BS. If he just says "I know I've sucked the past two years but I've given it my all getting ready for this season learning a new system" he probably buys himself some time/space. People generally give slack when you admit you screwed up. If he makes it look like the evaluators' opinions are garbage, he keeps more pressure on himself for no reason. Not as bad as Milliner's "I'm the best CB in the league" stupidity, but unnecessary just the same...
jetfrantik
Geno's right. Football is a team game. Jets have some big time talent, after one of the best offseasons in the history of the team. Looking forward to the new offense under Gailey. I think he will have a decent year.
jeaniec
Well, it's like they say: "If you don't laugh, you'll cry". Yes and another saying is that some things are left better unsaid. The news could gave done with this blurb.

win4ever
Lol, this is what I hate about the media. This is a non story that needs to be blown up for no reason. What did people want him to say? "Eh, you know what, they are right, I feel like a loser, I'm not sure why I'm even being given this spot"? Especially after all the hoopla with Mariotta and how the QB needs to a man among boys and be a leader? I sure hope he finds it hilarious, because I don't want my QB going into the season thinking he's happy to be a bottom 5 QB. I want him to actually have the belief that he can be better, so the whole team can take the lead and actually play passionately. One of the biggest highlights of my Jets fandom was defeating the Pats in the playoffs, but before that game, pretty much everyone went against them, laughed at their chances. The team rallied around it, got angered by it, and probably played the best game I've seen in years before or after. I want Geno or whoever is being ridiculed to react in that fashion, to actually have a problem with the report, than the BS of appeasing self centered reporters, whom have the biggest incentive to sell papers rather than do straight reporting. fltflo
Again folks, third year, solid support, friendlier system more suited to his skills, hopefully a much slower game for him now, there is no reason we should not see improvement from him except one. That being, he is not a starting caliber NFL QB, so it's on him to prove the doubters wrong this year. If not, he becomes just another NFL journeyman holding a clipboard for five different team for his career

JETSfaninNE
This is pretty much a non-issue but since this is a message board I'll chime in lol I don't think he should have responded with hilarious or thinking its funny. Instead he should have just said "I obviously have a lot to prove but with the support the organization has provided me I'm hoping to go out and lead this team to the playoffs." If he said that I would have been all up on a geno crush thinking the kid really has matured and is ready to take the next steps. But the comment he made showed a lack of refined maturity still. Its a defense mechanism that he projected by saying its hilarious. As if he isn't taking his previous performances seriously.

Freemanm
I think Geno has the talent to be a great QB, and under Gailey's tutelage, is going to have a break out year. He has receivers who can actually catch the ball and run routes. I'm not saying this simply to be positive, I'm saying this because I actually believe it, and all of you should too. To hell with the doubters, Geno's going to be great this year.
