Eli Manning, Giants agree on 4-year, $84M extension

Eli Manning got his wish.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that the Giants and Manning agreed on a four-year, $84 million extension, according to sources close to the situation. The deal is expected to included $65 million in guarantees and has a no-trade clause.

Rapoport reported Wednesday that significant progress had been made in negotiations and optimism had grown that a deal would be in place before the Giants open the season on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

The deal is similar to recent extensions given to Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Manning's $21 million average per year salary is slightly behind Wilson ($21.9 million) and just ahead of Rivers (20.8 million). Aaron Rodgers ($22 million) is the NFL's highest-paid signal-caller.

No big-money extension is a sure thing as an investment, but Manning, 34, is pretty close. He has never missed a start in 11 seasons, has nearly every Giants passing record and, of course, owns two Super Bowl MVP awards. His agent, Tom Condon, made the fair point that Manning's unflappable nature in the New York spotlight is a factor in negotiations.

Whether or not he should be regarded as one of the game's top quarterbacks, the Giants are thrilled to stay in business with one of their shining sons.

That deal for Eli is the reason that team hasn't made the playoffs last couple of years and is likely to miss the playoffs the next few years. Eli is not Aaron Rodgers/Luck. Eli needs an ELITE supporting cast to win. Since a good chunk of the teams cap is locked up in an average QB (that comes up big in the playoffs) they are not able to go out and sign guys like Revis or pick up a mo wilkerson (if he ever became a free agent) to fill glaring holes.

Most QB's require that.  Rivers hasn't won anything but got his money as well.

Andrew luckdoesn't need a strong supporting cast to make the playoffs.  Neither does rodgers, peyton and a select few.  The point is that once you pay a QB like Eli big money it kills your team.

So you would have let Eli walk and start from scratch? If you have a good QB then you have to pay him the market rate.  I know it's a balance but your success revolves around the QB position.  We spent a ton of money and probably have one of the best defenses in the league but if we fail it will again be because of no QB.  And as you can see with these contracts that have been thrown around to many QB's it's because the prospect of signing a top non QB  player instead of your own good QB will not work.

no offense but you are dead wrong

first off they are set to have possibly more than 60+ mil in free agency next year

on top of that. Can you tell me all that talent Eli has had when they won the Super Bowl

elite supporting cast my ass

Eli is not elite. But he is consistently to 15. For that reason he's worth the money. With him there's always the chance they can compete. We haven't had a QB since 1998, and even that was only for a year. That's the alternative. You pay the guys at QB that can play at his level.

I don't get all the Eli negativity.  Yes he throws INTs and can be inconsistent.  But he won 2 Superbowls (and both against possibly the GOAT QB Brady).  The man can step up when it counts (not to mention he doesn't miss games).  If Peyton had Eli's ice-water veins, he would've won 3-4 Superbowls by now.  Eli is worth that contract IMO.  Potentially he'll falter going forward due to age but it was still a worthy risk for the Giants.

Eli the man who helped win 2 superbowls with his clutch play isn't worth the money

yes he has a clunkers at times and makes some bad throws , however that's all people focus on.

Not the other things he does

late game heroics. Being clutch

never misses games

true professional who works his ass off

still in prime of his career just had a career year with a make shift offensive line no Cruz and no running backs last year

highest completion percentage had a great season TD to int ratio

now comes into this season with hopefully a fully healthy Odell randle added Shane vereen who should be a monster Jennings who's healthy and In a few weeks should have Cruz back. Not to mention will have his second year in Ben mcadoos offense

i swear some of you just trash Eli because he won for a crosstown "rival" in the Giants

But that's ok that you can't appreciate good quarterback play cause I'm thrilled they resigned Eli the man who helped win us 2 superbowls

Eli is one of the most overrated qbs in NFL history.  His 'clutch' record isn't that clutch when you look at the statistics for comeback wins and note that he's quite average there.  The two Super Bowl wins basically were ok performances where his teammates bailed him out.  In the first one, in the last drive he threw a ball right to the Pats db who dropped it (which would have sealed the game and we would be talking about how unclutch he was).  Instead we remember a tossup ball that Tyree caught with his helmet.

He has consistently had the best wr duos in the league for many years, and up until the last two years has had really good OL play and good defenses.

He is just an average qb that had a great supporting cast most of his career, a great coach and happened to hit a hot streak one year in the playoffs.  We conveniently forget the many years of lost games/playoff fails and so forth that he was directly responsible for.
