CLE Observations

Great post.

I agree on Jarrett, not Cros' fault. I didn't like the 4-1 - it was too early and the field position wasn't that great.  I disliked the 3rd call more than the 4th down call.

I posted earlier, 5 take aways and 4 penalties - fantastic.

Scrambling QB won't be an issue next week?

Marshall beasted; had he held on to that ball in the 1st Q (not blaming him) - this game could have been a blow out earlier.  Great first drive otherwise

Leonard Williams chasing Manziel around was awesome. Johnny can outrun most DL, but most QBs cannot. More often than not, Leonard is catching them on those plays. He was force the QB out of the pocket all day. I thought his play was standout, but just not as amazing as some of the other big performances we saw today.

I don't blame the D for letting Manziel get some yards. That's what Johnny Manziel does. He's slippery. McCown is another story

I can forgive the opening drive, because frankly it looked like Cleveland did a great job scouting mismatches in our D and executed, and I haven't seen a single defense come out and be stifling right from the get-go this week, and we improved as the game went on.

Bad

- Injuries to Cromartie and Mauldin

- Cromartie will get blamed for the long TD but Jarrett was responsible.  He

was supposed to give help over the top and after that play he never saw the

field again.  Also in a series before that Jarrett fell down in coverage against

a TE which allowed a 3rd down conversion

- Sluggish defensive start allowing a 9+ minute initial drive

- 3rd down defense early on was awful

- Need to do a better job stopping the QB scrambles.  That was the majority of

CLE offense

- Liked going for it on 4th and 1 in the first half BUT Bohanon???  Really???

- Bad info passed to Bowles in challenging the Hartline catch

- Awful punt returns by Kerley.  He never just catches it and gets vertical he

always dances allowing the tacklers to close in

Good

- The OLine.  You never heard any of the "big name" CLE defenders making a play

all game.  Particularly effective was Carpenter, he was able to neutralize Danny

Shelton 1 on 1

- Turnovers!!!  Five in one game???  We barely got that in one year!!!

- Penalties!!!  Four in one game???  We used to get four in a quarter!!!

- DLine run defense was outstanding.  CLE biggest offensive strength is their

OLine and we neutralized them.  Particularly effective was Harrison, he lived

in CLE backfield

- Good to see the defense and staff adjust to what CLE was doing and throw a

shut out in the second half

- Exactly the type of game from Fitzpatrick you want, efficient with a high

completion percentage.  I've been critical of his arm strength but his vertical

shots today kept CLE honest

- Well balanced offensive game plan called by Gailey.  And finally an OC who

pounded the ball with Ivory in the red zone inside the 10

- Marshall had only six catches but was terrific.  The strip changed momentum

in the game and his ability to take on and defeat a #1 CB was huge.  When was

the last time we threw a successful fade for a TD???

- Pryor finally had a decent game.  He forced the first turnover by knocking the

ball out of McCown's hands and finally was able to secure tackles in space.  He

had mixed results in coverage, one time he got lucky when McCown overthrew the

TE on the first series.  But another time in the red zone he did well covering

an RB

- Good game from our RB combo.  Ivory never goes down on first contact and Powell

is a well rounded back who picks up blitzes like a guard

- With Cro going down Williams is going to move up in the pecking order.  And today

was a good start with an INT and multiple pass break ups

Great post always look forward to your analysis after games and training camp. My fiancé and I have made it a ritual to read your posts. You're her favorite beat writer haha.

Yes carpenter played well too, oline should be solid this yr. Pryor played his best game to date. Forced fumble and 10 tackles. Owusu had a nice game too. Kerley never even had a ball thrown to him, really weird how the new staff has just buried him.

Carpenter did have that penalty that called back the TD - last year we would have only gotten a FG (or worse) after a TD was called back - team really battles back.

I imagine it isn't that the staff has soured on Kerley, as much as with Marshall (and Owusu), the WR depth is much better now.  Owusu has the speed and the size to be good.

That penalty was actually on Marshall...and nice to hear Leonard Williams admit that he needs to work on his conditioning

Luckily ... Don't expect Luck to scramble much next week

please God get somebody besides Kerley to return punts !?!?!

In his first 3 years he has 905 yards rushing and 12 rushing TDs...I'm not sure I would count on him not scrambling.  Just maybe not as much as Manziel...

Looks like Mauldin injury actually not that bad, but he'll still miss time. I'm seriously concerned about the lack of a pass rush. That's supposed to be a strength. Good QBs will eat our lunch unless we can bring some heat.

I'm not. It won't be easy dropping Manziel for multiple sacks. That's his best asset. He's quick. Most of the scrambles of his today would be a sack against most other QBs. In other words, I'm not giving the verdict just yet. We did manage 3 or 4 sacks n plenty of pressure up the middle.

Not too worried about the pass rush (YET); The Browns O Line is pretty good, Sheldon out, and the D still jelling.  It needs to get better, however, soon.

Agreed.  As I said in another thread, I think as the game when on they used the rush and blitzes a bit more to contain and were a bit less reckless than they will be against a pass first offense.

I expect to be running plenty and when he does they have to pound him.  He is a big boy, but it will still take away from his passing game.

Last time he faced a Bowles defense (bad day running and passing, but it was @ari):

Sun 11/24 L 11-40 20 39 163 51.3 4.18 17 1 1 21.9 60.1 2 31 15.5 28 0

Couple of other observations:

- Chris Owusu had a good game and his speed compliments Marshall and Decker very well.
With Devin Smith coming back we could have a very dynamic WR corps

- Interesting use of the TE's by Gailey.  They basically were used as "smaller OT's"
to give the OLine a 6th or 7th blocker.  Davis played clean and Cumberland actually
looked interested in blocking for once

Good point.  I remember Rex dismantling them, but Luck was a rookie.  I didn't think to check Luck vs. Arizona.  The game above is 2013.  I wouldn't call 2 carries for 31 yards a bad day running for Luck, but the Colts RBs had less than 50.  Seems like we should match up well with them, particularly with Hilton out.  Shame is that Moncreif and Andre Johnson should be more the type of WRs that we got Cromartie to match up with - you'd think Skrine/Williams/McDougle vs. Hilton.  I wonder if we will see more Walls.

A couple of other stray thoughts:

- CLE is not a great team and it's only the first game, BUT they do have:
  * A good OLine
  * An aggressive defensive scheme
  * Quite a few defensive playmakers (Shelton, Kruger, Dansby, Mingo,
    Whitner & Haden)
There are definitely things we can take out of this game and build on

- How great was it to see a "clean" game from the Jets:
  * No pre-snap offensive penalties
  * No too many men on the field
  * No too few men on the field
  * No problems getting personnel groups on and off the field
