UNC guys just can't stay out of trouble can they?

NCAA bans SMU from 2016 postseason, Larry Brown for nine games

The NCAA has banned SMU from 2016 postseason play and has suspended Larry Brown for 30 percent of the team's games this season because of a lack of head coach control, a source close to the situation said.

The 30 percent ban for Brown means he will miss nine games total. The school also will be hit with nine scholarship losses over the next three years, a source said, although it was two below the limit this past season so can count those toward the nine. SMU also has been placed on three years' probation.

The school can appeal the findings.

The NCAA is expected to announce the sanctions at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

This marks the third time a Brown-coached program has been sanctioned by the NCAA, with the others happening at Kansas and UCLA.

Part of the investigation at SMU stemmed from whether a former basketball administrator and ex-assistant coach Ulric Maligi helped Keith Frazier to become eligible to play there, a source previously told ESPN.

The school and Brown met with the NCAA's committee of infractions in late June. Maligi took a leave of absence in the middle of last season, but he was not found to be involved after the NCAA investigation, a source said.

A source said the former basketball administrator did not agree to speak with the NCAA about the investigation.

Brown did not have knowledge of any violation while it was going on, a source said. He learned about the violation after it occurred, but he did not promptly report the issue and was not clear about the violation with the NCAA's enforcement staff when he was first interviewed by the NCAA, the source added.

In addition to the major penalties, off-campus recruiting will be cut by 20 days, along with a reduction in permissible phone calls and communications with recruits, according to a source. The school will not be allowed any unofficial visits during the summer of 2016 for men's basketball, either.

SMU is expected to be a preseason Top 25 team and a contender for the American Athletic Conference title. An official at the AAC said the league would have no comment on the matter Tuesday.

Frazier, a guard, averaged 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 2014-15.

In March, the NCAA hit Syracuse's Jim Boeheim with a nine-game ACC regular-season suspension after an investigation found that the school and longtime coach did not control and monitor its athletic programs.

In 2014, the NCAA revised a rule, ensuring coaches have more accountability for what goes on in their programs and can no longer say that had no clue what had happened.

"An institution's head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members who report, directly or indirectly, to the head coach," the rule states. "An institution's head coach shall promote an atmosphere of compliance within his or her program and shall monitor the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program who report, directly or indirectly, to the coach."

Brown, 75, took over at SMU in 2012 after spending much of his career in the NBA. Prior to landing in the NBA, he led Kansas to the NCAA title in 1988. Kansas was banned from postseason play the following season and placed on probation for three years due to recruiting violations. Brown also coached UCLA for two seasons, and led the Bruins to the 1980 national title game appearance. However, that title game appearance was vacated after the NCAA found that the program had given improper benefits to players; the Bruins also were placed on two years' probation.

Brown has coached the Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks and Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA. He also coached the Nuggets and Carolina Cougars in the ABA.

Brown won the NBA title in 2004 with the Pistons.

Information from ESPN's Andy Katz was used in this report.

Larry has always been his own man, he learned the game of basketball from Dean but not his cheating ways obviously.  UNC made a great decision not to hire him after Roy decided to stay at KU in 2000 and Larry badly wanted the job.  one of the greatest coaches of all time but always was on the edge of the rules much like Belichick.

Apparently Frazier gave his username/password to Maligi who helped him complete the online course...I wonder how this got leaked in the first place.
