Price is exactly what the Sox needed. Should have just resigned Lester. Comparing Price to CC is apples and 300 pound apples.

CC had a rubber arm and threw a lot of innings for a long time.  Price has thrown a lot of innings in MLB, and will be 30 next season (August).  No way he stays good for that contract.  2-3 years, sure, but those last 3 at 93 million or so will be awful.

There's an opt out after 3 years so..

I doubt Price will ever use that opt out, 30 million a year is something he won't get again in 3 years.

You don't know how the market is going to be then. No one thought A Rod would opt out. And then the Yankees paid him anyway.

Lets be honest, any talk of money in an uncapped league is fruitless. Everyone has a chance to spend that money. We'll see how it works out. Bottom line is that the Red Sox are now a favorite in the AL.

you have every right to be excited and happy Carl, not trying to ruin your parade. We'll see how it turns out. Personally don't think he'll opt out, that could end up working in your favor anyway.

Have to remember Ortiz off the books next year. Buchholz too. That's 29 million right there. Most of their core is on relatively cheap contracts.

Price has AL East experience, a great track record in Fenway, and is one of the best in the game. Money aside its a great deal. Price, Buchholz, Porcello, Rodriguez, and Miley/Owens/Kelly is a solid five. Bullpen is better with Kimbrel and they're going to hit just fine.

I could see them spinning off Miley and putting Kelly in the pen. His arm could be well suited there.

Boston the Jekyl an Hyde team in baseball- one year they spend like crazy then they do not spend and them they spend like crazy again

The home grown way was not exactly working.  :)

Plus, after three last place finishes in four years, they needed to spend.  Can't charge high price tickets, rake in money hand over fist through your cable channel and run out Porcello as your ace.

Nice signing. He was getting his money.

Love the Yankee fans raising an eyebrow over contracts. If the Yanks did not already have some of the worst contracts in baseball they would have been all in on Price.

Hey, who better to learn from those mistakes.

Thing is Boston was on the hook for some bad contracts, and the Dodgers kind of helped them out.  Now they have signed the Panda, Ramirez and Price to huge deals.

Price is excellent.  No argument.  But 30+ million a year for 7 years for a starter is nuts.

that's what an ace costs now in free agency.  They're talking about Greinke getting an even bigger deal.

Tanaka for $155mil looks like a bargain now.

How many of those mega contracts actually work out?  At least CC was big in helping get a ring.  But almost all of those huge deals for guys 28 and older are bad.

it was a no brainer for the Sux.  They get a legit ace and don't have to give up Betts or Bogaerts like they would have for Harvey

Exactly.

The Sox needed an ace.  If you do not want to spend that money, then you end up with Rick Porcello.  Who had his moments, but he is what he is....a few notches above JAG.

and tanaka is 27 without the mileage a Price or Greinke have with $60 million less owed

the move screws the mets which I like because they won't get a real package in exchange for Harvey when they have to trade him in about a year
