Former Packers GM Ron Wolf to consult with Browns

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam will consult with former Green Bay Packers general manager and Hall of Famer Ron Wolf at the end of the season, according to ESPN Cleveland and multiple media reports.

Wolf, 76, retired from full-time work in the NFL in 2001 after 38 years in the league. He started in 1963 as a scout for the Raiders, followed by a stint with the Buccaneers before returning to Oakland, where he helped build two Super Bowl-winning teams.

Named Packers general manager in 1991, Wolf hired coach Mike Holmgren and traded for quarterback Brett Favre. Those moves helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI in the 1996 season.

Wolf was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year.

This would not be Wolf's first experience with the Browns. He was hired by the team in 2004 as a personnel specialist but left four months later after a rift developed between him and then-coach Butch Davis. Wolf later recommended to then-owner Randy Lerner that the Browns hire Holmgren as team president.

It's unclear what, if any, moves the Browns will make in the offseason, though general manager Ray Farmer and coach Mike Pettine could be on the hot seat as the team enters its final game of the season with a 3-12 record.

So CLE is back in their "annual clean house" mode???  Shocking!!!  And they wonder why they never

go forward

True, but how many fans have said that we should have gotten rid of Bowels after 8 games? It is understandable to want to make a change (and I think Cleveland needs to) but you should not respond to knee jerk reactions to a bad game here, there, or more.

It's the end of year #2 for Pettine, and the team regressed, badly from year #1.  He's got malcontent, misbehaved players, which suggests leadership and accountability are a problem.  Cleveland is near the top of the league in penalties, and there's been a demonstrated problem with in-game coaching gaffes (poor use of timeouts, game management issues).

In other words, this apple didn't fall far from the tree.

If Cleveland fires its GM, they should fire the coach as well.  Pettine might be better in a second stint as a HC, five or ten years from now, but I seriously doubt he brings the Browns to a respectable place in this situation.

Mr. Accountability himself fired his QB coach for not doing a better job of holding Manziel accountable last season.  Yes...the head coach, fired a position coach for allowing a player to be out of control.

REX and Pettine will both be DCs ....  Very soon.

Not so sure about that.  I think Rex goes to TV one year later than @T0mShane said he would.  Pettine?  He hasn't done a whole hell of a lot as a DC/HC since leaving the Jets.  Wouldn't be shocked if he gets a gig though.

well....  The fall of character in NFL announcing certainly supports your theory.  If a murderer can get a gig, Rex can.

but...  Emmitt Smith hasn't been around a lot and Joe Montana failed as well.  At some point. Rex will grow old on TV.

IMO....  He is a fraud and blowhard.

I recall zero people calling for him to be fired after 8 games.

I remember that going on, but I don't have the time to go back and check; we had a lot of people calling for change when we hit that loosing streak ... either way, my point is that although Cleveland does need to make a change, owner, fans, talking-heads are too quick to pull the plug.  Forget bowels, how about Fitz sucks and will never win 6 games, he can't stay healthy, Pryor is hot garbage, etc.

I recall plenty of (totally justified) criticism, but no one called for him to be fired in week 8 or between weeks 8-9. Not unless you want to count a potentially sarcastic remark, like someone calling to cut Cromartie mid-season, but I don't remember that either. Even if you found one bloviating maniac that suggested firing him, you can find one person to say just about anything.

Your post alludes to some serious "fire Bowles" movement that was very common among many (enough people that you felt the need to find fault with all of them now). In reality, I can't recall one, let alone so many that you would recant with a "remember all those people?" type of question when you ask "How many fans have said..."

It's nonsense. No one called for him to be fired right after week 8. Maybe one or two saying, at that time, IF he didn't show something or turn things around by the end of the season (i.e. after a 4-1 start, go on to lose 9 of the last 11 with a comparatively healthy roster), but again even that was maybe one poster out of everyone here and that's about as strong as it got.

No one said he should be fired right after week 8, let alone lots of people.

Here is one: http://forums.jetnation.com/topic/124577-bowles-i-will-say-it

My point is that people are always calling for a change.  He is hot garbage, he can't coach; Fitz sucks, on and on, it isn't a scathing indictment on this site or anything else.  The above post says if we finish with 6 or 7 wins pull the plug. I am glad that we have won 10 so far, but that doesn't mean that Bowels has long term success (I remember Rexs first 2 years).  I am just saying sometimes it takes more than a year for a player or coach to start hitting his stride.  In the case of Cleveland, def a time for a change.  With Rex, it took too long.  Also, sometimes you make a change for the worse (eg Idzik).

People can call for someone's head whenever they want.  Media too, but I am saying there is a tremendous lack of patience and even though many teams/fans have been hurting for quite a while, stability also plays into the consideration.

Uh that is precisely what I said. Read the thread starter and my post. Even in an extreme position like this the one poster you found wasn't calling for Bowles to be fired after week 8. Exactly as I wrote, if Bowles lost 9 of 11 (with a healthy roster) then ONE person said he wanted it. Hardly the "how many people..." that infers many were calling for something no one called for.

And I said that many said similar things about different players.  My point is that someone somewhere is always asking for a change.  You want to count them all - go right ahead.  We have multiple threads calling for Fitz to sit. Multiple threads saying the were frustrated by Bowels/Chan.  Even that thread said that wining 6/7 games he would like to start over (not 11).

Fitz sucks and will never win more than 6 games, start Geno.  We lost 2 sit Fitz.  Pryor is hot garbage, get rid of him... I can go on and on.  But, I am done.

My point all along is that fans and media always want to pull the plug, but in Cleveland it is likely to be a good idea.

If we lost 9 of our last 11 (with this cushy schedule and vastly improved roster), it would mean something was seriously wrong with the coaching. Something that wasn't going to magically get better next year or the year after that. That was the most extreme argument made by one person on this site. So that one example was one person calling for him to be fired after one massive failure of a season, not after 8 games.

So again, there was no widespread type of calling for him to be fired after 8 games. This example of one person isn't even an example.

Got it.  An example of 1 isn't an example.  Nobody else agreed with him.  The rants over sitting Fitz don't count.  The rants over Pryor being a bust don't count.  My original post said nothing about Widespread.

You win, take one aspect of my post and go to town with it.  Because this site NEVER has any overreacting knee jerk comments like lets blow up the team, or Bowels doesn't adjust, yadda, yadda, yadda.

This is silly and I am moving on.

It's not an example because it's not an example, and your original post certainly alluded to it being a lot of people (unless you asked the "how many" question with the idea that the answer was 1 or 2).

Why not just be happy with the season instead of focusing on which posters here you think needs to be put down? I certainly am now happy with the season, but it doesn't mean I've had nothing negative to say about this or that Jet (far from it). There's plenty of justified criticism here towards coaches and players; now, in the past, and there surely will be in the future. It's a Jets fan site, not a Jets corporate site where critiques of any Jets coach or player is heresy. People get emotional rooting for their favorite teams. How many times have you read someone saying a play, pass, play call, roster, etc. is literally the "worst ______ I've ever seen" when it in surely is not (unless said person has just started following football the prior week)? Fans of all teams in all sports exaggerate like this, including calling young players busts shortly into their short careers. Let it drift.

If you think you're too good of a fan for the rest of us, you're welcome to that opinion. You'll be in good company, as there are probably several hundred posters here who feel that way. :)

Go Jets!

I am perfectly happy with our team.  Nor do I think it is unreasonable to be upset about things. Was just commenting on Cleveland having to start over and how all too often people have knee jerk reactions. Fire this guy, bench that guy; no time to gel.  But it sounds like my comments hit a little too close to home.  Wasn't signaling anyone out, but you sure did.

I believe you are the one who blew those comments out of proportion; never did I say I was a better fan either. The 'if you think you are better' IMO s a just a way of calling someone out.  Either way, I am happy to move on from this - way more time on this subject than I thought - slow work week not withstanding...

Well I went on with it because you replied, of course.

I'm certainly happy to move on as well. We just like it if critiques are left to the Jets rather than other posters here (T0mShane criticism notwithstanding).
