Abraham not a lock to be in NY

By Dan Leberfeld

Date: Mar 15, 2005

The John Abraham story took an unexpected turn.

When the Jets made their star defensive end the franchise player this off-season, it was thought to be a given he would sign a one-year deal for $6.6 million, the average salary of the top five players at his position.

Not so fast.

Abraham has decided not to sign the deal, and will spend the next few months attempting to get a lucrative deal from another club. If he's able to do that, the Jets can either match that offer, or receiver two first round picks from the club that signs Abraham.

Peace abe...you selfish c*cks@cker.

two number ones this years and next-let's face it this has Parcells written all over it.Rolling the dice at any cost especially the next ex head coach who'll surely get fired trying to clean up the damage Tuna is causing now.We KNOW the great one will skip town doing to Jones and Dallas what he did to us-FAILING TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP like he promised

I can see Abe in Dallas. They just cut Wiley too. Parcells is creaming his Cowboy thong.

He's not goin anywhere. Who's gonna offer him a 'lucrative' deal?? ESp. a guy who's been known to be "injured".

Other teams aren't gonna give up there 1st rounder(s) for him.

Just my opinion.

The Jets have lost three starters and a key backup in free agency. Now, they're ready to call John Abraham's bluff.

According to Abraham's Baltimore-based agents, Anthony Agnone and Rich Rosa, the Jets have broken off talks on a long-term contract with their Pro Bowl defensive end and are willing to let other teams negotiate with Abraham until July 15.

"It really shows the player right to his face that, 'Hey, we'll use every effort we can to keep you for a year, but we're not going to make a commitment to you,' " Agnone said.

Abraham, who received the Jets' franchise designation last month, almost certainly will be a Jet one way or another this season. But things have gotten contentious.

Agnone said Abraham refused to sign the one-year tender worth $6.7 million, giving other teams until July 15 to sign him to an offer sheet. That seems wildly unlikely, considering that the compensation would be two first-round picks -- the first of which could be in the upcoming draft.

It's all posturing, but posturing can get ugly. Not only did the Jets reject Agnone's long-term proposal, they didn't even make a counter-offer -- and they yanked a proposal off the table that they made in November, Agnone said. The Jets declined comment through team spokesman Ron Colangelo.

Because they were not able to sign Abraham to a long-term deal by 4 p.m. yesterday, the Jets will not negotiate with him until after July 15. That's because they'd lose the franchise designation -- for Abraham or anyone else -- if they signed him to an extension without Abraham signing the one-year deal first.

It's complicated, but unless Abraham receives a blockbuster offer that the Jets do not match, he will have to sign the one-year deal at some point or risk a lengthy holdout. Once he signs it after July 15, the Jets and Abraham's agents can continue talks on a longer contract.

Basically, the Jets still hold the cards.

Another option would be to seek a trade for Abraham, as the Rams are doing with their franchise player, tackle Orlando Pace. That is not an option the Jets are currently considering.

In any event, Abraham will miss the offseason program and minicamps, a risk the Jets were well aware of when they franchised him. Rosa called the team's strategy "positioning more than anything."

It is believed that Sean Gilbert is the only franchise player to command the compensation price of two first-rounders -- in 1998, when the Redskins sent the defensive tackle to Carolina. Gilbert struggled and eventually was released. Washington used one of its picks to select linebacker LaVar Arrington.

I'd give this walking vagina up for the 11th pick.

The 11th pick brings a lot of flexibility. It ensures us either Alex Barron, Shawn Merriman, Erasmus James, or one of the top two corners.

I'd make the trade if I were Dallas. Since the Cowboys won't sniff the playoffs, Abe would be able to play in every game without catching the flu or worrying about his bank account.

This happens all the time with players who are franchised.

Abraham knew he was going to be franchised last year.

I called it a few months back. Don't be shocked if Parcells makes an offer to John Abraham.

He wouldn't mind at all giving up two first round picks. He's in a win now mode and is going for broke here. He has the cap space to get a deal done.

He'd be willing to give up one of his first rounders this year and one next year. This might be Tuna's final year in dallas anyway.

Parcells is probably thinking, Shawn Merriman or John Abraham...... David Pollak or John Abraham........He'd rather have Abraham a 3 time pro bowl DE still in his prime.

Dallas has no pass rush. Abe is what they need.

As for my feelings on John. I love the player but The Jets are doing the right thing. They can't give Abraham a long term deal until he proves that he can play a full season on a high level.

Until that day, Abe will be franchised again next year unless someone forks over two first round picks. We have full control of this situation.

If we took the 11th Pick here's what I would do

11th Overall ... LT Alex Barron

26th Overall ... 4-3 DE/Lethal Edge Rusher, Demarcus Ware

GJ&H-

That's 2 #1 picks for this part-timer, plus we stilll have our own...are you draftniks salivating at the possibilities?

What's really funny is some Jet Fans calling

Abe Greedy etc, but that's exactly what St Martin

(Not the Island)did when he left the Pats to

come to the Jets for the Big Bucks!! And besides

his Huge Contract he cost us picks as well..I

think it was a 1st and a 3rd(Ham do you remember?)

And what will the Hermophiles say?? I thought

players just love to play for the Grillmaster??

Hell Hermie couldn't even get his Best Bud John

Lynch here!! It's always Fun in Jetland wading

through the BS to get to Reality.. Can't

figure why Guys want to play for the Tuna?? Don't

they realize Herm has made the playoffs 3 out of

4 years??

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth...this team has guys that work their a$$ off on the field like Ellis and Curtis giving money back and restructuring (hell even Chad offered) and this guy is grasping for more. For once can a professional athlete show some integrity. The Jets have stuck by him and his inmature antics.... jacka$$

if i knew you weren't an old beach bum, i'd say you were on crack Savy

even for you comparing Curtis to Abe is a huge stretch, obviously you will take any opportunity to bash Martin although you will dispute that in your response

Abe basicallt held out last season because he was worried about his money, thats greedy and selfish

Curtis was a RFA that signed an offer elsewhere, it happens all teh time, can you tell me what NE's offer was at the time....none it was a tender offer for one year and he went elsewhere....he never held out or refused to sign or anything like Abe is doing now

he is a POS and needs to go and you know that as well as me, besides how does Herm come in to the conversation here??? oh yeah it's his fault that abe hasn't signed because herm is a soft pushover right

oh wait thats right Herm benched Abraham because HE wanted to bench his ass for DUI not because teh league wanted it done, but yeah you're right Herm is still soft for benching that guy in a playoff race

If they dont sign him and we get 2 #1's then screw him, make him stay here, dont reward the piece of crap, wuss who let his team down to protect his free agency.

TJ, I'm talkin about a trade

Cowboys are not signing Abe to an offer sheet and surrendering two #1's ... but we might be able to swing a deal for one #1 {11 Overall}

demarcuse ware is really good, but what about Justin Tuck???
