kelly
Much has been made about the number of quarterbacks the Cleveland Browns have used in recent years, but when it comes to the NFL Draft, no team has taken more shots than the New York Jets over the last 16 years. From 1999 through 2015, the Jets drafted ten quarterbacks, two more than the Browns during the same period. At the other end, the Dallas Cowboys have drafted just three quarterbacks since 1999. On the other hand, the Browns have drafted four quarterbacks in the first round of the last 16 drafts, more than any other team and something they are expected to do again this year. Meanwhile, five teams have not selected a quarterback in the first round during this time period, including the Cowboys, Chiefs, Saints, Seahawks, and Patriots. > https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/no-nfl-team-uses-more-185039501.html

I still think the Sanchez move was great and would love us to pull something like that off again, actually rated him as a prospect too but he just wasn't good enough. Ultimately we've made only two serious moves at getting a franchise QB in the draft. Both showed glimpses but didn't fulfil their promise for different reasons. Pennington was pretty unfortunate. rex-n-effect
For most of the teams on the high end of that chart it shows the indiscriminate burning of draft picks on QBs is not an efficient approach.

Imagine if it only cost us the equivalent of that trade to move up with the Browns again? Oh happy day that would be. The trade itself was an absolute steal, the player selected didn't work out, but Mangini really ****ed that value up bad by over valuing some of his former players, I wish H Jackson did the same this season, likes Smith, and 2 other back ups on the Jets roster. Can we still trade them Kenyon Coleman and Brett Ratliff? Agree on the trade value. And it also was correct in valuing a potential franchise QB over not just the draft picks but also a pretty good starting end and a decent young safety with upside (and Ratliff lol). Like you say, it sucks it didn't work out but the trade value was unmistakable. It does illustrate the downside, though, of a swing and miss of that caliber investment. Jason brought it up in a great post of his on jetscap a couple weeks ago. You end up with [New Draftee or New Big Money QB] or bust, and if he doesn't work out the rest of your plans are not only meaningless but takes multiple seasons to recover. *sigh* oh, well. Swinging and missing is better than not swinging & going down looking, I suppose.

As per "Ohio State NY Jets Fan" we took 2 #1s and 2 #2's. Unless you take a QB in the 1st 2 rounds (possibly 3 but I'd say 2) it's a real reach. In fact, taking a 2nd round QB is probably a pretty low percentage too because prospects tend to get picked higher even if they're overrated. BowlesMovement
This is why scouting and player development are so crucua. The Jets fired the one guy who was half way decent at scouting and player development because he was boring and all that stuff, and the fans did not want to have a beer with him. Then held on to the dope who was awful at scouting and player development forever, cause he'd be so fun to tailgate with and all that stuff.
