IDK but recently Maverick Rowan and Derryck Thornton had no problem reclassifying

this is the 3rd time K has done this after Dawkins and Thornton.  I don't understand how these kids keep falling for his act and how it's legal that a kid who has been to 3 high schools can graduate early.  the sad thing is before Bagley officially announced his decision he told a reporter how K was helping him reclassify.  he's just a bad man.

I like the baseball and football rules as they are

I think baseball could work but the problem is there isn't a minor league system like baseball.  The D league is ok or the other option is overseas where a baseball player knows they will be playing in this Country if they come out.  I do think they should allow those that want to the opportunity to declare out of HS and if you show up on campus you should have to be there for min of 2 years.

  • 1 month later...

The defending champs open up practice today, looking forward to seeing this team play.  should be another good year- will it be Nat'l title good?  I don't know but should at least compete among the top teams in the Country. they will play a little different w/ no proven low post options but they have so much talent outside the post they will be tough.  Last year I think I said ceiling of Nat'l title and floor of rd of 32.  I kind of have similar expectations this coming season.

my hunch was wrong, I thought the NCAA would try to hammer the Heels but instead found NO VIOLATIONS.  although it has sucked to have recruiting suffer the last few years the heels are STILL the best program in college basketball despite all of it and this nightmare for the school is finally over.  Enjoy the unveiling of another banner tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!  UNC gets off!  Woohoo!  They're totally innocent of any wrong-doing!

Never mind that they should have lost accreditation over this.  But because their fake classes weren't offered solely to athletes and because the NCAA is completely inept and has no jurisdiction in this area, UNC gets off.

Gross and disgusting, and of course the non-UNC alum fanboy is here to tell us all how UNC is the best at everything.  Disgusting.

it's so much fun when people who have no clue about the case spout off as if they do.  enjoy the banner ceremony tonight!

what do you think about your former coach being involved w/ Pitino? I'm sure he did things very different than Rick, right?  at least you have someone who follows the rules now.  I wish he would have went somewhere else, you don't deserve someone as good as him.

as great as today has been and will be it really sucks that essentially UNC was on probation all these years for not breaking any rules and doing things the right way. it shows how great Roy is that he could still make 2 title games and win another title but they were unfairly punished and nitwits who don't have a clue will still spout off as if they did.

Hey schools of America!  Guess what?  The NCAA just ruled that fake classes are OK!!  Just as long as you offer them to EVERYONE.  You MIGHT face some accreditation issues.....or maybe you won't.  Who cares??  The FBI can only impact shoe money right now, and the NCAA just opened up a giant loophole for you.

Hooray!!!  Fake classes for EVERYONE!!!

After punting UNC case, NCAA exposed as powerless, obsolete

For an organization run by university presidents (and we’ll get back to that in a second), the NCAA on Friday reverted to the principles of its most conservative football coaches: A punt is never a bad play.

That’s what the NCAA did with the North Carolina case, after seven years of investigation, millions of dollars in legal fees (well spent, as it turns out) and three very different bills of indictment.

The NCAA punted.

And not just on the North Carolina case, either. It punted its entire mandate.

If the NCAA can’t punish North Carolina for decades of what was clearly, to any outsider, academic fraud designed to keep athletes eligible, what’s the point? Already exposed as feeble and inept by the FBI, which shed more light on the seedy side of basketball recruiting in one pun-laden press conference than the NCAA ever has, Friday’s admission that it has no way to punish North Carolina for decades of self-described scandal opens the door to fake classes everywhere.

As of Friday, there’s no reason for any athlete to be called a “student-athlete” anymore. They’re just athletes, because the NCAA is powerless to enforce the other half of its beloved phrase. And as if it just couldn’t resist applying a coda to highlight this, the NCAA ruled N.C. State freshman Braxton Beverly ineligible for having the temerity to attend a summer school class at Ohio State, the kind of capricious nonsense at which the NCAA excels.

The NCAA can knock around a kid who transferred before his freshman year even really began, but years of academic fraud to benefit athletes remain outside its purview.

The infractions committee clearly wanted to find some way to penalize UNC but found itself pinned between its own mission and the university’s clever lawyering. University presidents, who run the NCAA and make its rules, don’t want the NCAA poking around in academics, what they insist on calling “curriculum,” leaving it up to the schools to decide what is and what isn’t academic fraud.

North Carolina figured out, in mid-investigation, that even if it called what happened in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies “academic fraud” when dealing with its academic accreditor, as long as it didn’t use those words with the NCAA, there was nothing the NCAA could do. So UNC started coming up with all kinds of other ways to describe the classes – “pivoted dramatically,” the report says – and left the committee on infractions a prisoner of its own bylaws.

If you can seethe in print, the infractions committee’s decision positively seethes about this particular gambit, to the point where it loses all control of its grammar.

“The membership trusts academic entities to hold themselves accountable and report academic fraud to the NCAA and has chosen to constrain who decides what constitutes academic fraud,” the report reads. “Because of this limitation, UNC’s decision to support the courses as legitimate combined with a stale and incomplete record that does not allow the panel to drill down to the course and assignment level – even if the panel had wanted to second guess the courses – it can not conclude academic fraud occurred.”

It all cascades from there. Without that foundation, the rest of the case crumbles to nothing.

Clearly, the committee wanted to find some way to punish North Carolina. That has been clear for months, since the committee demanded a new Notice of Allegations (the third) that was written far more starkly than the two that preceded it. But there will be no punishment.

“It’s important to understand that the panel in no way supports what happened,” said SEC commisioner Greg Sankey, the chairman of the infractions committee. “What happened is troubling. ... The panel applied the membership’s bylaws to the facts and albeit times the position shifted and we were skeptical of positions taken, the panel couldn’t conclude violations. That’s reality.”

So there will be no punishment for anyone else who decides their athletes don’t necessarily need to go to class, after all. The door is now open for universities to create entire Potemkin departments for their athletes. Who’s going to stop them?

Certainly not the NCAA, a prisoner of the narrow vision of its own leaders, unable to enforce its core mission, thoroughly exposed as weak, powerless, ineffective and obsolete.

they did punish North Carolina and punished them for something they didn't do.  The News-observer was behind it from the start and they created the false narrative that is so often repeated by lazy journalists and fans that wanted them strung up. These were not phony classes, they were easy classes which every University has. athletes comprised less than 30% of students taking these courses so please explain how these was some grand scheme to keep athletes eligible?

I refer you back to the link below to know all you need to know about the N and O.  keep in mind the all the talking heads followed the Dan kane investigative piece.

but please keep quoting the N and O:lol:  it just shows what you know about this case.

I wouldn't talk about the FBI as they took down the former employer of your last HC.  there's a much greater chance your former HC was involved in paying players than Roy and his staff doing anything wrong w/ regards to academics.  Be careful and enjoy the Heels success.  Now they won't be hampered by the negative recruiting that has slowed them down to only one Nat'l title this decade.

Your tears and whining are brightening my day.

and s usual the injuries begin, Joe Berry out about a month w/ a broken hand. It happens every year. Better now than later in the year though he was playing hurt throughout the Tourney last year too.  Hopefully he will only miss a couple of games and they are deep in the backcourt but he is their most important player.

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The University of North Carolina coaching tree, including UNCW's C.B. McGrath, is branching out to raise money for the governor's North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund.

Roy Williams, the Hall of Fame head coach of defending NCAA champion North Carolina, has invited head coaches with UNC ties from UNCW (C.B. McGrath), UNC Greensboro (Wes Miller) and East Carolina (Jeff Lebo) to join the Tar Heels in a basketball "jamboree" on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

The four-team "jamboree" will begin at 3 p.m. Each school will play a total of 40 minutes, divided into three segments against the other teams.

Tickets are $20 and go on sale on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017. Tickets may be purchased at the UNC Athletics Ticket Office at the Williamson Athletics Center next to the Smith Center, at GoHeels.com or by calling 1-800-722-HEEL. Students from UNC Chapel Hill will be admitted with a valid student ID.

UNCW, ECU and UNCG will have a limited number of tickets available through their athletic ticket offices. Information on tickets available at the UNCW Athletics Ticket Office will be announced at a later date.

"Coach Williams asked me if I'd be interested in playing an exhibition game for hurricane relief and I thought it was a great idea," said McGrath. "It's a win-win situation for us and the fans. We have an opportunity to raise some money to help everyone and the fans can see some good basketball for a day.

"It's a small part that we can do. Their lives have been destroyed and, hopefully, the money we raise can help them get back on track. It's important for our guys to understand how we can use basketball to do something important like this."

The Seahawks, two-time defending champions in the Colonial Athletic Association, open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 11, against NCAA Division II North Carolina Wesleyan at Trask Coliseum.

McGrath was an assistant coach at UNC from 2003-17. ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo played at UNC from 1985-89 and UNCG Head Coach Wes Miller played at UNC from 2004-07 (his brother, Walker, is a freshman on the Tar Heel basketball team this year).

UNC Head Coach Roy Williams:
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our universities, our basketball programs and college basketball fans to help people in need. The recent hurricanes caused so much damage. We have a unique opportunity to engage with three schools that are part of the UNC system, whose coaches also have close ties to our own program, to partner in this event. I hope fans of all four teams and people who just want to find a way to make a positive impact will come out and support this relief effort."

ECU Head Coach Jeff Lebo:
"Here in eastern North Carolina we know first hand how devastating the effects of a hurricane can be and have been the benefactor of the generosity of so many in the past. We are privileged to be part of this event with the opportunity to raise money for those affected by these catastrophic storms and give back to those who unselfishly gave to our community when we were in need."

UNCG Head Coach Wes Miller:
"We're honored that Coach Williams included us in this event and we are thrilled to be a part of it. Most importantly, it is for a tremendous cause, but it's also an opportunity for us to compete against three quality in-state programs."

heehee, the special group has returned w/ such funny jokes! It's so amusing watching people who don't have a clue continue to talk especially a guy from UNCW where the last coach was involved w/ Pitino, a guy from UConn who watched his team get banned from the tournament for a year and phone card Nova fans.  The bottom line is the NCAA didn't have a case b/c Carolina did nothing wrong.  It was an easy class, there are easy classes at every school.  Players weren't steered there, grades weren't changed, coaches didn't write papers like at Syracuse or change grades.  the guy who set out to destroy Carolina and led to the investigation was proven a fraud but this is the way things work today, mindless fools believe everything they read at first and don't want facts.  anyway,

you know as much about this issue as you do college basketball or the NFL.  I feel bad that your little minds are so influenced by headlines, it's the college sports version of "hands up, don't shoot".  Never happened but b/c simple minds saw headlines they believed it.  The classes were real, the work was real.  Do some research but in the meantime please enjoy:

junk, All you have is headlines.  You can't say d*ck either way because you have no connection to the school.  Laughable that you rip others for reading headlines from journalists and believe them.  Yes, because they all just make stuff up.  All of them except the ones that defend UNC, that is.

And no one cares about UNC's tainted titles.  They've been cheating since Dean Smith and shouldn't be an accredited university.  Which is something actual students and alums should care about. Who outside of Chapel Hill and non-student fanboys like you really cares what their basketball team has won?
