Hackenberg, Peake Sign Jets Contracts

Round 2 Penn St. QB and Round 7 Clemson WR Bring Total to 4 of 7 Draft Choices Inking Deals

The Jets have signed two more of their draft choices, second-round quarterback Christian Hackenbergicon-article-link.gif and seventh-round wide receiver Charone Peakeicon-article-link.gif.

At Penn State, the 6’4”, 228-pound Hackenberg started 38 games and became the only 8,000-yard passer in school history. He also established PSU marks for touchdowns (48), completions (693) and total offense (8,215). Last season, Hackenberg threw for 2,525 yards with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Peake (6'2", 209) enjoyed his best season at Clemson last year as a redshirt senior, making 50 receptions for 716 yards (14.3 yards/catch) and five TDs. For his Clemson career he had 99 catches for 1,172 yards (11.8 yards/catch) and 10 TDs.

Four of the Jets' seventh draft choices are now signed following today's signings and last week's announcement that fourth-round corner Juston Burrisicon-article-link.gif and seventh-round punter Lachlan Edwardsicon-article-link.gif had signed.

So that leaves Lee, Jenkins, and Shell.

Christian Hackenberg signs with Jets

Posted by Josh Alper on May 12, 2016, 3:29 PM EDT

Carson Wentz wasn’t the only rookie quarterback to sign his first NFL contract on Thursday.

The Jets announced that they have signed Christian Hackenberg to a four-year deal. The team also signed seventh-round wide receiver Charone Peake, leaving them with four of their seven 2016 draft picks under contract.

Hackenberg, who went 51st overall, generated a sharp split of opinions coming out of Penn State. The Jets came down on the side that saw his size and arm strength as building blocks for a player who can contribute in the future rather than the one that saw Hackenberg’s collegiate inaccuracy as a sign that he’d fail to make it at the next level.

At the moment, Hackenberg sits behind Geno Smith on the Jets’ quarterback depth chart but the team’s slow dance with Ryan Fitzpatrick about a new contract means that there may still be a change at the top. Fitzpatrick’s return would lessen the chances of Hackenberg seeing early playing time, but that’s probably not a bad thing no matter where you come down on his professional prospects.

That throws a major doovalacky in Villain's QB depth chart.

Where's Petty? :rl:

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, May 12.

TIP: Hackenberg is a project quarterback and would be best served job shadowing during his first pro season. Accuracy concerns and his lack of progress during his collegiate career limit his fantasy value to keeper/dynasty formats, and Hackenberg should be viewed a desperation start if forced into action during the 2016 season.
