Yankees to sign deal with StubHub to be official ticket resale partner

Darren RovellESPN Senior Writer

The New York Yankees will announce Monday morning that they are transferring their resale business, Yankees Ticket Exchange, to StubHub, which will take over for Ticketmaster as the team's new fan-to-fan ticket exchange.

Financial terms were not available, but the business is believed to be worth more than $100 million to the Yankees over the term of the contract.

The deal brings to an end a long battle between the team and StubHub, which began in 2012 when the Yankees were one of two teams -- along with the  Los Angeles Angels -- to opt out of Major League Baseball's deal to renew StubHub's role as the league's official secondary ticket market maker.

It also ends a controversial move that the Yankees and Ticketmaster made at the start at the season, when they banned print-at-home ticketing and PDFs in favor of mobile transfers.

The public reasoning for doing so was the avoidance of fraud, as PDFs can be printed many times, and the first person to scan a copy of a PDF gets in while the others get denied. But the move also benefited Ticketmaster, since StubHub does not allow for mobile transfers because it doesn't have access to the bar codes as Ticketmaster, the official partner, does.

What this meant was that if someone if someone wanted to sell a ticket on StubHub, they had to get it to StubHub's office near Yankee Stadium by the day of the game at the latest. It was an inconvenience at best for a business that has become known for its ease.

For those who bought the tickets, they had to pick up them up at a StubHub office located more than a half-mile away from Yankee Stadium.

The deal will close that StubHub office, but it is not known yet how the new arrangement will work between StubHub and the Yankees under the new deal, which will begin after the All-Star Game.

Yankees Are Said to Enter Deal With StubHub

Bedeviled by dwindling attendance and criticism from fans about their ticketing policies, the Yankees are entering into a partnership with StubHub, a longtime nemesis, to take over the Yankees Ticket Exchange from Ticketmaster, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

Details were to be released Monday at a news conference. The agreement will begin immediately and run through the 2022 season, according to people close to the negotiations. Sources close to the deal requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it.

The Yankees have long accused StubHub, a nationwide ticket-resale broker, of undercutting the value of their tickets by making cheap tickets available on the secondary market. The Yankees, in turn, have been accused of making their tickets too expensive.

With the Yankees scuffling, average attendance has fallen to over 8,000 below their mark for 2010, when the Yankees were defending champions.

Beyond feeling uninspired by the Yankees’ play, some fans have been angered by their ticket policies. The team’s decision this season to enact mobile ticketing and do away with print-at-home tickets was seen as a shot at StubHub.

The ban on print-at-home tickets made it more cumbersome to buy tickets through StubHub and forced some fans who had trouble with mobile ticketing to wait in lines to resolve their problems. Now, it seems, the Yankees have turned to an old foe for help. BILLY WITZ

Feeling good about PDF's and/or mobile ticketing returning.

But where does it say that ticket prices have no floor?  Stubhub allowed seats to be purchased at any price, high or low.  Is that the case with the Yankees deal?  Or did they cap the floor to the Yankees liking which puts us back to square one?

NFL Ticket Exchange now allows pricing below face just like stubhub in case you didn't know. It was announced about a month ago.   At least for football.  Have no idea about baseball.

Yankees beef with StubHub months ago were:

1. PDF counterfeiting.

2. Incompatible technology for Yankees on StubHub's QR code platform.

3. Setting an artificial price floor for seats so they could control the aftermarket.

Sounds like #1 and #2 are addressed, looking forward to hearing about #3.

After years of feuding, the Yankees and StubHub announced an agreement on Monday under which the company will become the team’s official ticket reseller but with caveats that include a floor on how much tickets can be discounted.

StubHub will replace the Yankees Ticket Exchange, which was offered through Ticketmaster and remained the primary source for Yankees tickets. The new system will begin operation on July 7, for tickets for the July 15 game.

Fans who do not sell tickets by July 7 on the Yankees Ticket Exchange will have to re-list them on StubHub, which will have a floor for pricing: a 50 percent discount on the price of an individual ticket at the full season-ticket rate.
