Is Bryce Petty really on anyone's radar that he gets picked up off waivers?

This just seems silly.

I think it gives the jets more flexibility with him in practice and you can always just juggle the bottom of the roster.  I remember the jets waived and re-signed some poor dude like 5 times in 1 season

while I do believe that these 3 guys are improving, Smith is in his 4th year and unless he gets an opportunity here and "Balls Out", is likely done after this year as a Jet . Petty is going into his 2nd year, and like Smith is going through his 2nd season in the same system and according to reports isn't even ready to challenge for the back up QB Job . Hackenberg who I was hoping the Jets would draft needs to sit this entire year, regain his confidence , allow his body to heal and his mind to be refreshed and we will see what we have next training camp .

Fitzpatrick had a great year in 2015, and the Jets were somewhat trapped into bringing him back because of the lack of trust /development in Smith and Petty .

IMHO, The worst thing that could have happened to the Maccagnan/ Bowles regime was IK breaking the Jaw of Geno Smith .  It was not that initial signing of Fitzpatrick, but the events that caused Geno Smith to lose his starting position as the QB. He might have stunk up the Joint proving everyone right, and Fitz might still have had a great season even if not as productive . What we would all know with absolutely certainty is that Smith is the "Bust" so many think he is .  4 yrs later, and I have no clue what this player is, and that's the real same .Yet another QB mishandled by a Franchise searching for stability at this most important position on a Football team .

Her is what I know for sure, and that is Fitzpatrick is not the future of this team at QB . Yet, we're not even willing to see what could be knowing that the option of a hold the fort is there as the fall back option.

If I were The HC of the Jets, I would not Fitzpatrick play a single down in the 1st 2 pre season Games .  Geno Smith and the kids would get every single rep with Smith getting the 1st half, Petty the 3rd and Hackenberg the 4th . Fitzpatrick plays the entire 3rd preseason game and the 1st half of the 4th  followed by Petty in the 3rd and Hack in the 4th .

You will never develop a QB having him sit on the Bench watching for 3 yrs .  Year 1 you watch, year 2 you make mistakes and year 3 you make adjustments .  This all need to be done in the same scheme and then you can actually see the maturation of a player . What we do is draft a QB, throw him out there, watch him stink up the joint, fire the coaching staff change schemes and do the same frilling thing over again before cutting ties with the QB, signing someone's tired old reject and repeating the process .

We're the Jets, and the cycle needs to stop. Generational curses only stop when someone is wiling to stand up and say enough is enough .

That is all .

Great post Tinstar, nailed it

It is so good to hear from you. I think you might want to stick around here for this season.

I really like the attitude around the team and we just might surprise even our cynical selves!!!!

Yeah, no doubt, got back in the swing of things today. Lots of knowledgeable posters here.  Definitely sticking around

A report on Sunday’s New York Jets training camp practice from Alex Kaczynski…

Offense

QB – Fitzpatrick was accurate, consistent, and looked in better thane expected shape. Multiple times he was able to climb the pocket and rifle the ball down field. The biggest shock of the day was when he connected with Eric Decker for a 60-yard TD. I saw him thread the needle on multiple occasions to Kenbrell Thompkins and Jace Amaro for big gains as well. If I were to give him an overall grade for the day, a solid A- would be appropriate with the one interception to Buster Skrine on a poor read intended for Decker.

As for the other QB’s Geno Smith looked pretty good as well. He still has a lot of velocity behind his throws. He overthrew a few balls on the outside but was on target for the crossing routes. Christian Hackenberg looked good and had a big touchdown play down the right sideline to Kyle Williams. He needs work in the footwork and accuracy department but still has plenty of time to improve. Bryce Petty did not look good at all. It looked like he was forcing many of his passes and overthrowing receivers. The Jets are said to be taking 4 QB’s into the season, but if Hack is able to separate himself from Petty that may change.

WR – The 10 pounds lighter Brandon Marshall looked good physically. Decker was involved on multiple throws over 25 yards, I counted at least four with Fitz. During the post practice interview, he touched on how the team may be looking to use the deep ball more effectively and more often which could be a possibility with more attention to Matt Forte coming out of the backfield.

Thompkins is absolutely dominating training camp and continued that on Sunday. He was involved in almost every series and was showing explosiveness, good route running and speed. He had one drop from Fitz but nothing major. If he were to continue this into the season, the Jets could be scary good throwing the ball. Undrafted rookie Jalin Marshall is out to make a name for himself with a solid training camp so far. He is consistently making plays with the first team offense

RB – Not much here, it is pretty hard to gauge them in training camp, Forte was not active in drills, but was dressed with no pads. At the end of practice, he was seen at the ball machine catching passes. During the post practice interview he was not too concerned with the hamstring injury. He said he knows its only the first week and there is no need to rush anything and re-injuring himself. Bilal Powell somehow looking faster. He gashed the defense on a 50+ yard touchdown run.

Defense

It looks like Bowles and Mac did exactly what they wanted to do in making the defense faster. You can tell that the young guys still have a lot to learn with the new system, but overall they were productive. Watching Skrine go one-on-one with Marshall did give me a bode of confidence that he can play opposite Revis if he is on the outside First round pick Darron Lee came in to the second half of team drills and I was blown away at how fast he actually was.

First play he came in, he had a would-have-been sack getting into the backfield with Geno at QB. Darrelle Revis was involved in team drills for the first time this training camp and looked like he was moving well. He said in his interview that he is more involved in mentoring the younger players and is enjoying that role.

Jordan Jenkins should be a nice addition of speed for this defense. Former first round pick Dee Milliner got beat a few times, but was solid for the first few days in camp. He is defiantly out to prove he is not a bust because this may be his last chance to do so.

Overall, I was actually impressed with how good the entire team looked as a whole. For only four days into camp, I was not expecting what I saw at all. Special teams looked like it was shaping up nicely. Jeremy Ross looked smooth back returning kicks and punts. He looks confident and has some explosion from the get go. Rookie Lachlan Edwards was impressive punting, which has been such a problem for the Jets in recent history and any sort of consistency would go a long way for the battle of field position.

I guess we'll see in preseason. This is projecting to September. Petty looked pretty good in last year's preseason games. We'll see how much he's improved.
