On Monday the NFL announced the team will be fined $400,000 and will forfeit its first week of 2017 organized team activities (three OTA days). Seattle will also forfeit its fifth-round selection in the 2017 draft. Coach Pete Carroll will be fined $200,000. The NFL and NFLPA independently reviewed the Seahawks' June 6 on-field practice video and agreed the team violated the "no-live-contact" rule of the collective bargaining agreement. The rule restricting excessive on-field physical contact during OTAs was put in place to enhance player safety by limiting contact during offseason workouts as well as an attempt to prevent teams from gaining a competitive advantage during summer months. Seattle was previously fined $300,000 in 2014 and docked OTA sessions in 2012 for violating the non-contact rules. In Monday's announcement the NFL also noted that any additional violations by the club will likely result in "significantly higher fines, the cancellation of future OTA days, minicamp days, preseason or regular season practices, as well as the forfeiture of higher-round or multiple draft selections." For a team that consistently finds diamonds in the rough late in the draft, the forfeiture of a fifth-round pick will sting Carroll and general manager John Schneider. You want them to give up a 3rd round pick and the rights to Russel Wilson? A 5th pick is pretty steep price to pay for an "illegal practice." If that happened to the Jets, I'd be pretty upset. bostonmajet
Plus there were some fines for both the team and perfect Pete. The difference here is that the team didn't whine all over the media. They cooperated with the league and took the punishment in stride. We don't hear media pundits like King arguing that Pete is just pushing the envelope and its just a simple violation for a recent SB winning team. Or crap like if you aren't cheating you aren't trying hard enough. Just like the Saints after bounty gate (although there was a ton of publicity), or when the Colts GM was suspended, or Atlanta with the stadium noise, or when the Redskins and Dallas were penalized for overspending in the uncapped year (okay - on that one Jerry was pretty upset, but at least Kraft calmed him down and told him to take one for the league). You have to wonder what the real punishment to the Pats and Brady would have been if they just cooperated. Alas we will never know.

bostonmajet
Yeah, for all those saying 5th round big deal; forget marshall, just don't give us sh*t about some GM wasting a 6th round pick, or trading it to move up, or even 'lets carry Geno for the year from the compensatory pick'. Either 3-day picks are important, or they are not. Yes, you are less likely to hit on 5th then on a 3rd, but still. If the Pats lost a 5th for some other stupid thing (like the time he put a player in the penalty box for not showing up for OTAs) the world (at least the media) would cry that the NFL is out to get the Pats and people just hate them for winning. This is the third time they have been punished for the same violation (2012 and 2014 were the other times). Imagine the punishment the Patriots would have gotten if they "cooperated" with the league in the deflated balls investigation in 2014 and then were "caught" again in 2015 and 2016. If you know the penalty for an infraction yet \ you choose to do it anyway then you deserve what you get.

Quote so nice, you said it twice. I agree, for some things. It's hard to lay out a penalty for every infraction, but for a practice like this, yeah. That being said, this is the second time they were busted for this in 3 years.

And I agree with that as well. But specifically lay out what those ramifications are prior to the violation occurring rather than allowing one person to be the sole judge, jury and executioner. Just because they broke the same rule multiple times, didn't mean they didn't cooperate with the investigation. It is like the Pats holding on every damn snap. Apparently the punishment isn't enough for Seattle to change their ways. Just like the 10 yard penalty doesn't deter the Pats from holding. The point wasn't whether or not the punishment was a deterent, but more like did they cooperate. Well, they made everyone available for discussion; no phones destroyed. I don't know; imagine if the Pats gave them access to the people they wanted; the lawyer didn't demand all the questions up front, and Tom didn't destroy his phone. Maybe just a fine - who knows. There is a big difference in breaking the rules (like Seattle did) and when you get the balls measured and after they are approved run into the bathroom and deflate them. One is cheating and the other is cheating and going out of your way to hide it. May not be a big distinction to you, but to me it is.

Bruce Harper
I guess this means that the Hawks hold the early season lead in cheating over the Pats this year. The Pats will not let this stand.

It sounds like you are just trying to force a comparison to the Patriots because you want to talk about the Patriots. That's fine. But these are apples (one violation, less than full cooperation, one package of penalties), oranges (the same violation on 3 different occasions, full cooperation (such as it is), with escalating penalties each time) and grapefruits (the same violation on multiple occasions, in a situation where there is no meaningful concept of cooperation, and the penalty is the same every time). Nope; I just commented on how they were fined and lost a draft pick but it wasn't a national media issue. They took the penalty and moved on. That is where the comparison started. Personally, I think the punishment should be worse for multiple penalties, but didn't originally go there. This 'forced comparison' came as a response to a question about 'hey you said this, but imagine what would have happened if the pats did that'; just responding to that comment... No worries; these things get kind of twisted as they progress. And normally you have filter out the bickering between two (or more) posters yelling at each other over some personal attack (not talking about us), so the context is lost. For the record - I haven't been a fan of Pete since his college team got screwed for breaking the rules just as he bailed to make big money in the NFL. I guess it isn't him as much as the NCAA and NFL that clamp down on the players for this crap but let the coaches move on without reprisal. Then my hatred for the Pats took over.... Il Mostro
The NFL should let the other teams in the Seahawks' division have a lottery for the forfeited pick, giving one of their division rivals a bonus pick and make that pick trade-able.
