No serious NFL players or coaches have any respect for, nor do they want anything to do with the Jets and their absent English tea sipping owner. The Jets have finally become the Kansas City Athletics

It's $17m even with the workout bonus. Plus it saves $17m (the amount they won't be paying him), not $11m.

He's clearly getting dumped. His entire extension was a stupid blunder, guaranteeing him $37m no matter what, with Mo already on year-to-year deals where he had to keep proving himself..

So all $17 million goes back in our cap space?  I thought only $11 million?

We save what we don't pay out. Even guaranteed money (like that $6m for Revis this year) is new money paid out in 2017.

What you're looking at, and getting confused by in all likelihood, is the theoretical 2018 savings after the other 2 years of amortized signing bonus (at $3m a pop) accelerates to this year. But it's an artificially lower "savings" (seems like only $11m the way you're looking at it). But if they have it all hit this year, then it frees up $6m later. It's 6 in one, half dozen in the other (in this case literally, though in millions).

$3m is already scheduled to come off in 2018 and it will no matter what we do with Mo. What's up in the air is the $6m still left (that would be $3m/year for 2019 and 2020). If we keep him, it'll come off in $3m increments until the end of his contract. If we dump him, well the league rules say you can't keep amortizing past bonus for a player that isn't on your roster anymore. It all accelerates to the current year's cap. The exception is if the player's cut after June 1 (and the league lets a team designate 1 player as a June 1 cut even if we actually cut him in March). If on/after June 1, then the same $3m comes off this year and the rest of the accelerated amount ($6m in Mo's case) hits next year.

It's $9m no matter what, because that was already paid to him back in 2016. But whether it all accelerates to this year or not is just a team's decision.

Most likely they'll let it all accelerate to the 2018 because they have so much space as it is. But in the end there's no net savings one way or the other.

If they cut him they save $17m quite simply because they won't be paying him another $17m.

Jets coach Todd Bowles declined to say whether benched DE Mo Wilkerson will rejoin the team next week. He called it an "internal matter." Wilkerson was benched for showing up late to a meeting last Friday, the second time in two weeks he was disciplined for tardiness.

Too bad we can't bench Todd Bowles for his poor coaching.

"Internal matter" for a 17 million dollar player is pretty important.  The press needs to keep digging and applying pressure on this one.

Would be classic Jets to let him play and watch him get hurt.

They have a nice, easy out - simply shut him down for the year.  This shouldn't be an internal matter but an obvious decision.

Mo Wilkerson's status with the Jets remains up in the air. Coach Todd Bowles said Wilkerson is in the building today, but he declined to say if Wilkerson will play on Sunday. Bowles said they're "still working through some things," adding that the front office is involved. Sounds ominous. Wilkerson was benched yesterday because of chronic tardiness to meetings. He's not expected to be on the team in 2018. One factor the Jets will consider: His 2018 salary ($16.8M) is guaranteed against injury. The Jets may not want to risk an injury by playing him in the last two games.

Mo Wilkerson is at the Jets' facility today but that doesn't mean he will automatically return to his usual role. TBD. Stay tuned. #Jets

When i think of what a beast Wilkerson was 2-3 years ago. Its a shame to see his level of play now. Don't really know what's wrong with him. He'll probably go to the Pats and wreak havoc on the Jets  offense for the next 3 years. At the very least Bellicheat will get him to meetings on time.?

Speaking to reporters, Jets DE Mo Wilkerson showed some remorse for his lateness/benching, saying he "let the team down." He said he respected Todd Bowles' decision to bench him, although he gave the impression he didn't agree with it. Curiously, he wouldn't say if he wants to be back next year; he said it's up to the organization. That's what guys say when they know they're getting cut. The quote that will make fans scream: "I️ feel like I've earned everything I've gotten" — meaning $37M over the last two years.
