The History of Todd Bowles' Gaffes

Jack Straw

Recommended Posts

In only 21 games, Todd Bowles has proven that he's incapable of effectively managing a football team on Sundays. Maybe he's a great coach Monday-Saturday, but on Sundays he's been more bad than good. I figure this thread can serve an historical repository of all of Bowles' coaching gaffes. I can't remember every blunder coach Bowles has made in 21 games, but below is a brief summary of what he's accomplished in his short time as Jets Head Coach.

 Let's review:

1) Jets vs Patriots, week 7 2015: On the Patriots final drive of the game with 5+ minutes left on the clock and the Jets down by 3, Bowles refuses to use any of his timeouts as the Patriots move the ball down the field. The Patriots inevitably score to put them up by 10 and give the Jets (and their 3 timeouts left) the ball back with 1 minute and 13 seconds left on the clock. The most concerning part about this is that Bowles later defended his strategy of not using his timeouts. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2015/10/jets_todd_bowles_clock_management_vs_new_england_p.html

2) Jets vs Raiders, Week 8 2015: Down 14 points with 3:19 left on the clock at their own 21 yard-line, the Jets elect to punt the ball. http://nypost.com/2015/11/01/jets-pitiful-report-card-todd-bowles-should-look-away/

3) Jets vs Jaguars, week 9, 2015: "With 1:30 left in the second quarter, the Jets got the ball at their own 15 with all of their timeouts remaining. Instead of trying to move the ball for one more score before halftime, Bowles ran the clock, forcing the Jaguars to use timeouts. The Jets handed the ball to Ivory twice and Zac Stacy on third down. The decision looked even worse after a 31-yard punt from Ryan Quigley and terrible coverage from Cromartie on the Bortles-to-Hurns touchdown. After the game, Bowles seemed to think the Jets had less time than 1:30, and he said they might have been more aggressive if they had gained some yards on first down." http://nypost.com/2015/11/09/the-foundation-of-jets-success-is-crumbling-under-todd-bowles/

4) Jets vs Bills, week 10 2015: "After scoring a touchdown in the third quarter to cut the Bills’ lead to 22-9, should the Jets opt to kick the extra point instead of going for two? If you make the two point conversion, the score is 22-11 and now you are a field goal, a touchdown and another two-point conversion away from tying it. That would have made the first fourth-down decision a no-brainer for the Jets to kick the field goal. Instead they went for it and got stopped. There is no difference between being down 12 or 13 if you miss the conversion. Then you still need two touchdowns to win the game." http://nypost.com/2015/11/13/todd-bowles-looks-every-bit-the-rookie-with-late-game-gaffes/

5) Jets vs Bills, week 2 2016: "Matt Forte's fourth-quarter touchdown gave the Jets a 12-point lead before the point-after. Bowles sent out his kicking unit for the extra point. There is literally no risk in going for two in that scenario, which would have stretched the lead to two touchdowns. A 12-point lead is not different from a 13-point lead. Either way, two touchdowns beats you. The miscalculation nearly cost the Jets a win. The Bills scored a touchdown with 1:17 remaining. After a time-wasting three-and-out, Buffalo got the ball back with 10 seconds. Of course they didn't score, but if they had, an extra point would have won it because of Bowles' bad decision." http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ftw/2016/09/20/pete-carroll-playing-an-injured-russell-wilson-was-the-biggest-coaching-mistake-of-week-2/90742190/

6) Jets vs Steelers, week 5 2016: "On 4th-and-2 on their own 46-yard line, down 24-13 in the fourth quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The idea was, according to Bowles, to pin the Pittsburgh Steelers deep in their own territory, get a three-and-out and then score. Naturally, the Steelers ripped off a 12-play, 79-yard drive resulting in a touchdown, burning off almost six minutes of the little more than seven remaining." http://www.todayspigskin.com/afc/new-york-jets/todd-bowles-mistakes-costing-jets-much-fitzpatricks-picks/

Feel free to add any that I missed!

The crazy thing is that Bowles coaches totally conservative when we are behind and yet our offense is normally mega risk taking trying to catch up  (part of the reason Fitz is throwing 6 picks in a game)  Too many 'disconnects' between head coach and oc and head coach and gm.

The two point covert thing was near unforgivable, his excuse being he was talking about defense and was not paying attention.

You can screw up as a young or 1st time coach, it happens but you better learn from it and so far Bowles is displaying the same traits that sunk Rex, not leaning from mistakes, not taking ownership of the whole team.

I don't blame him on the 2 point conversions - more than likely he's old school where the adage is "only go for 2 points when you have to".

So yeah, agreed to the core.

the unicorn, finding out he has been suspended for weed, buys a rolls royce, gets high, puts a kid in the car and speeds, and is arrested and booked.  days later, the unicorn tells the media we will never see his name in the paper again, knowing he was recently arrested

bowles finds out from the media, and doesn't even bench the unicorn for 1 play - sets the tone - you don't have to be laurence taylor or troy aikman to get special treatment from bowles, you just have to be a starter on his defense

fitz has a 6 pick game, then 3, and bolwes doesn't even put him on a short leash, he declares his status as safe

this is the problem.  the players know this ship is doomed so they play hard, but not so hard they might get hurt

damn shame

It doesn't get any more obvious than that one if you ask me.  Late in the game, go up by 12, too little time to worry about a td and two fgs.

Our GM needs to hire his own coach. Defantely seems to be a disconnect between the coaching staff and front office on how the team should be run.

Which conversation do you think took place?

Conv#1
Woody: Would you like to be the GM with Bowles as the HC?
Mac: Oh of course, I've been a big fan of Bowles. Wouldn't pick any one else

Conv#2

Mac: No. Only a fool would hire him. He lacks experience and doesn't know sh*t about offense.

He made his choice.

There is simply no defense for Bowles. He has regressed and frankly has no answers on how to fix the mess he has created.  1-6 here we come and if the team continues to play unemotional, uncompetitive and dumb FB, he will be fired at the end of the year.

Did he regress or did we just have an impossibly easy schedule last year?

I didn't include the countless number of times under Bowles that we've received the ball on a kickoff with 40+ seconds left before halftime with plenty of timeouts left and basically took a knee instead of trying to drive the ball down the field for a field goal. The ultra-conservative approach is going to get him run out of town.

Of course 1. But its not like he will turn down a GM job just because he didn't pick the coach. But them not being on the same page is probably a direct result of hiring the coach before the GM.

This fanbase deserves everything they get.  Funny that Mangini got brought up.  The same Mangini people were saying was better than Rex only a couple of years ago.  The same Mangini that got at least 3 years to prove himself, with an arguably, far more talented team.

Bowles isn't getting fired after this year.  Keep crying over it though.

I don't care about Richardson, but I wholeheartedly agree on the Fitzpatrick point. How do you start your QB the next game after he threw six pics in the previous game? The Jets D, despite all its flaws, gave the team a chance even in the 4Q in that game. If the Jets scored an early TD in the 4th, the score would have been 17-10 and it's a new ball game. Add to that the fact that the Jets got the ball into the Chiefs red zone several times, and the team only scores 3 pts. Disgraceful

When this is your backup, a dead body is a better choice.

What defense does one run when the GM furnishes you with 5 starting DTs and no ends or sizable OLBers, a MLB/ILB that runs slower than all the DTs, plus at CB an overpriced has-been, an over-priced never-was, and a cheap never-was?

I'm no great fan of Bowles in the head coaching role so far, but what would a GM-handpicked head coach do with that?

You run a 4-3 and blitz with safetys and hopefully those DTs will create a hole for the safety or CB to run through and breakdown the pocket. You can also all out blitz and send Darron Lee or someone along with it. But otherwise our slow LBers and Corners need to hold coverages for 3 seconds for our blitz to work.

You can't just blitz every down & essentially make blitzing the base defense.

These guys move well - very well -  for men their size at about 300 pounds each. But they don't well compared to 250 pound ends and don't (can't) chase down more mobile QBs.

It's too many big men, made only worse by keeping David Harris on the field for every defensive snap.  Combine that with some sub car coverage in the secondary, and you get the mess we've been seeing for so much of this season.

Then again, showing sympathy to your idea, it could hardly hurt rushing a safety every down. They're so often out of position or miscommunicating in the secondary anyhow. :bag:

Last week. Also after the punt/giving up and Steelers scoring, comes out with the Mad Bomber offense and then a blitzing defense when the game was over. Dude, you ALREADY GAVE UP. If someone from either team was seriously hurt on what amounts to meaningless tough guy BS, there would have been a lot of pissed off players and people. Bowles decided to end the game; be a consistent coward.  Lucky Mike Tomlin didn't smack the crap out of him for that nonsense.
