varjet
I think the complete lack of enthusiasm for this group is further evidence that of the Dumpster Fire that is the Jets roster. The only reason one would be compelled to keep any of them is that there are no viable replacements for them on the roster. With a top 5 pick I am thinking the Jets' best move is to trade the first 2 rounds down for more picks. This roster needs help.
LIJetsFan
Geez, that's not a very impressive list.....actually it's the opposite of impressive. Hopefully Winters is a grateful/cooperative resign but otherwise none of these guys will be missed in the slightest. What a f'ing team! kelly
Jets' Free Agency Landscape Posted 2 hours ago Eric AllenSr. Reporter/Director, Internet ProgrammingEmail @eallenjets On the Inside Team Could Be Active in Free Agency, Wants to Build Through the Draft In one month, the NFL’s free agency and trading periods will commence. The Jets have 10 players who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents and three who fall into the restricted free agent category. After general manager Mike Maccagnan made a pivotal move to kick off the offseason with the extension for RG Brian Winters, the Jets have several critical decisions to make in the weeks ahead.According to OvertheCap.com, the Jets are currently more than $7 million over a salary cap projection of $168 million. Although NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated last week in Houston that the cap could jump to $170 million, the Green & White must make some moves to get under that final number. “The long-term goal has always been to build through the draft. We do have some ability the way the contracts were structured to make determinations on how to proceed going forward if we decide to either create cap space or keep the player,” said Maccagnan at his season-ending news conference. “We’re no different than we were originally. Again, our long-term goal is to build through the draft.”The Jets can clear space in several ways including the restructuring of existing contracts, the release of players and through trades. Then in early March, the Jets and the NFL’s other 31 teams will explore the open market. “We’ll potentially be active like we have been. I think what you end up doing is you try to target players. It depends on the value of the player and if we can ideally find players that are younger in terms of free agency,” Maccagnan said. “But, of course, those players tend to be the higher-dollar, higher-contract guys, so the trade-off is you kind of pay a premium for a younger, pro free agent, first-time contract guy. But you’re always kind of balancing that. But I would say simply we’ll be active potentially in free agency.” VIEW GALLERY | 13 Photos Jets' 2017 Free Agents Jets UFAs (10) S Antonio Allen: Rejoined the Jets on Sep. 8, Allen was primarily a special teams performer in 2016 and was placed on injured reserve in December. kelly
Eric Berry or Nick Perry ? | Which big-name free agents could Jets target ? Star power? The Jets don't have salary cap space right now. Seriously. They actually don't have any. They're nearly $8 million over the team cap threshold ($168 million projection). But, with a few moves, they can free nearly $50 million (see how here), which is more than enough to sign a big-name free agent. Which guys could be on their radar? Here are a few to watch. Alshon Jeffery (WR) The Jets don't need a receiver yet. But if they cut Brandon Marshall or Eric Decker, they could use a young, top-notch wideout. Jeffery is just that. Martellus Bennet (TE) The Patriots are set to have $61 million in salary cap space. If they want Bennett, who caught 55 passes for 701 yards and seven scores last year, back, they can have him. But Bennett's personality doesn't really mesh with Bill Belichick. Does the old-school ball coach want to deal with Bennett and Rob Gronkowski? DeMarcus Ware (OLB) It's an unlikely signing, but Ware would be the perfect fit for the Jets. He can still play, and would be a great mentor for Jordan Jenkins and Lorenzo Mauldin. The only issue? Why would Ware, who will turn 35 in July, want to spend the final year or two of his career at One Jets Drive? He'll likely go to a contender. D'Qwell Jackson (ILB) If the Jets cut linebacker David Harris, Jackson could be a nice replacement. He won't cost too much, can still play, and they can sign him now (the Colts cut him last week).Jackson, 33, was a bit banged up last year, but had 150 tackles in 2015. Trumaine Johnson (CB) Todd Bowles loves big-bodied cornerbacks who excel in press. That's Johnson. He's 6-2, 208 and still young (27). He'll cost a pretty penny on the open market, though. After what happened with Darrelle Revis, would general manager Mike Maccagnan be willing to throw another huge contract at a cornerback? Nick Perry (OLB) Nick Perry is the best pass-rushing outside linebacker on the open market. He's a weird player, though. Before this year, he was considered a bust. He had 12.5 sacks from 2012 through 2015. In 2016, he had 11.0 sacks. He's a potentially risky signing. Some more on that here. Stephon Gilmore (CB) Another physical, in-your-face cornerback with an attitude. The Jets could use that on defense. Again, this comes down to Maccagnan. After getting scorned by Revis, does he want to hand out another huge contract? He may elect to draft a cornerback, instead. Eric Berry (S) If Berry hits the open market, the Jets should do everything they can to sign him. He'd be the perfect acquisition. He's young, a leader and a dynamic player. He's the type of guy who elevates everyone around him. He's probably the best safety in the NFL. The Jets secondary needs an overhaul. Berry can be their new cornerstone. > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2017/02/eric_berry_or_nick_perry_which_big-name_free_agent.html#incart_river_index
NYDreamer
This makes the most sense. Young player who has experience at both tackle positions. He provides depth if not starter material. http://nfltraderumors.co/jets-trying-re-sign-ot-ben-ijalana/ Jets Trying To Re-Sign OT Ben Ijalana Nate Bouda 9 hours ago Jets 0 Comments According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the Jets are attempting to re-sign OT Ben Ijalana before the start of free agency next month. New York just picked up $10 million of cap space by declining LT Ryan Clady‘s option, but they also have another area of need that will have to be addressed this offseason. It’s possible they could try to bring Clady back at a reduced cost, but it seems likely he’ll want to see what his options are. Ijalana, 27, is a former second-round pick of the Colts back in 2011. He lasted just over a year in Indianapolis before he was waived and later claimed off of waivers by the Jets. Ijalana has returned to New York on one-year contract each of the past two seasons. In 2016, Ijalana appeared in all 16 games for the Jets and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 60 offensive tackle out of 78 qualifying players. kelly
With free agency approaching (March 9), we're analyzing the biggest needs on the New York Jets' roster, examining possible upgrades : Position : Quarterback 2017 cap hits of top returnees : Christian Hackenberg -- $1.1 million Bryce Petty -- $753,000 Pending free agents: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith. Key stat: Among the 39 quarterbacks with at least 125 pass attempts, Petty finished last in passer rating (60.0) and last in Total QBR (19.4). Fitzpatrick wasn't much better -- 35th and 32nd, respectively. Money matters: This will come as a shock to no one, but the Jets have the lowest quarterback cap total in the league -- $1.8 million. Actually, Fitzpatrick's ghost is counting nearly three times more than Petty and Hackenberg. That's because there's a $5 million "dead" charge for Fitzpatrick. Big picture: Let's be blunt: The quarterback situation hasn't been this unsettled since early 2009 -- the three-month window between Brett Favre's departure and Mark Sanchez's arrival in the draft. The big story this offseason will be Hackenberg, who didn't see the field as a rookie. He's a bigger question mark now than when he was picked in the second round. The organization hasn't given up on him, but he needs to show marked improvement. It would be a major upset if Hackenberg or Petty emerges as the opening day starter. Free-agent market watch: Kirk Cousins, Mike Glennon, Brian Hoyer, Josh McCown, Matt Schaub, Mark Sanchez, Case Keenum, EJ Manuel, Matt Barkley. Also could become available: Tony Romo, Tyrod Taylor, Colin Kaepernick, Jay Cutler, AJ McCarron, Robert Griffin III. The game plan: The Jets need to come out of this offseason with a starter. Ideally, they'd get him as a free agent, not a trade. This team needs to preserve its draft picks. Finding a match for John Morton's offense (likely a form of the West Coast system) is important. Not counting Cousins, who probably won't hit the open market, the best of the bunch is Romo. He probably will be released, but he's not an ideal fit for the Jets. He's too old (37 in April) and too risky because of durability issues. Bottom line: I can't imagine Romo wanting to play for a rebuilding team. Kaepernick is familiar with Morton from their days with the 49ers, but he'd bring a distraction the Jets don't need. The Jets are expected to have interest in Glennon, but anything more than a one-year guarantee would be too risky for a player with his limited track record. See: Brock Osweiler. Taylor is a dynamic athlete who protects the ball, but he's not natural in the pocket and doesn't have the passing skill to thrive in a West Coast system, which is predicated on accuracy and timing. If the Jets settle for a low-cost, bridge quarterback, the answer could be Hoyer, who is serviceable when healthy. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/66890/free-agent-mission-for-jets-find-a-starting-quarterback
NYDreamer
I happen to like this offseason plan the best and would fine with it. http://turnonthejets.com/2017/02/primesport-turn-jets-12-pack-dont-edition/ Welcome back to another edition of the Turn On The Jets 12 Pack, brought to you by PrimeSport, official sponsor of the New York Jets and the Big East Tournament. Make sure you subscribe to our TOJ Podcast here and our Slight Work Podcast here. Today we look at 12 things the Jets SHOULD NOT do this offseason… 1. Kick The Can – In a perfect rebuilding world, the Jets are going to make the hard decisions of moving on from Brandon Marshall and Nick Mangold. In a less optimal rebuilding world, one or both of them will finish out their contract and play here next year. In the worst possible rebuilding world, the Jets will lower their 2017 cap hits by spreading their guaranteed money into 2018 or beyond. The Jets absolutely cannot kick the can down the road with any player on their roster over 28 years old. The same goes for David Harris, Darrelle Revis, Matt Forte or Steve McLendon. 2. Invest Old – Similar to the first one but the Jets should not be spending heavily on any free agents over 30. This means no Andrew Whitworth (35), no Martellus Bennett (30), no Lorenzo Alexander (33), no Trent Cole (34), no Brandon Carr (30), and definitely no Josh McCown (37). They should be targeting free agents in their mid 20s who could be stepping into larger roles here than they had in their previous situations. 3. Overestimate Sheldon Richardson’s Value – The Jets need to accept the reality they may have to settle for a 3rd or 4th rounder in return for Sheldon Richardson, who needs to be traded. Richardson was suspended twice last year (once by the league and once by his own team), which gave him more suspension than sacks (1.5). The year before he was suspended for four games. There is no question Richardson is immensely talented. There is no question his production the past two years on and off the field has been a step down from his first two years. When the Jets decided to pay Muhammad Wilkerson big money, Richardson’s chances of getting a payday here ended. The Jets have failed to find a way to effectively play Richardson, Wilkerson and Leonard Williams together and now it is time to move on, even if it doesn’t return a premium draft pick. The Jets won’t have Richardson in 2018 so don’t waste another year experimenting around with your three big name defensive linemen, start figuring out how to move forward with just Wilkerson and Williams. 4. Lose Draft Capital – The Jets need to build out the lower and middle class of their roster. Over the past two years, they have only drafted 13 players. They are already down a pick heading into this year’s draft. They should looking to obtain more picks by a mix of moving Richardson, Brandon Marshall and trading down when it makes sense. They do not have enough ammo to aggressively be moving up in any round and again, they shouldn’t be shy about parting ways with veterans for more draft picks and they absolutely should not give away any draft picks for veteran players. 5. Don’t Pass The Torch – Players like Steve McLendon and Matt Forte will likely be here because of their contract situation but that does mean they need to remain full time starters. Beginning in OTAs and minicamp, Deon Simon and Bilal Powell should be seeing larger roles, if not becoming the starters outright. Despite the names on the back of the jerseys, the Jets shouldn’t be shy about demoting the necessary players, if a younger upgrade is available on the roster. 6. Half Ass Tight End – Assuming Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Brandon Bostick can hold down tight end is unacceptable. Neither player is capable of being a full time tight end, particularly in a new offense that will emphasize the position more. The Jets need to be aggressive in both free agency and the NFL Draft about improving the position. 7. Double Down – Everybody knew Christian Hackenberg was a project and/or a reach in the second round. If the Jets internally do not believe he is a future starter here after watching him the past year, they cannot be shy about targeting a quarterback early in the NFL Draft. Yes, there will be further blowback about the Hackenberg pick but that doesn’t matter, if your scouting department thinks Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Mitch Trubisky or whoever is more likely to be the guy than Hackenberg, pull the trigger. If the Jets made a mistake with Hackenberg, they are only compounding it by passing on quarterbacks the year after. 8. Go Full Osweiler – Whatever veteran quarterback the Jets invest in, it should be a low cost deal that they can out of in 2 years without long term damage. The two most expensive options would likely be Tyrod Taylor or Mike Glennon. You don’t pay Taylor more than 8-10M per year with 2 years guaranteed and you don’t pay Glennon more than 5-7M per year with 2 years guaranteed. The worst thing the Jets can do is replicate Brock Osweiler’s contract for somebody like Glennon. 9. Play The PR Game – The most marketable names on the Jets are Marshall, Revis, Mangold, Decker and Forte. This should have no bearing on what football decisions are made around those guys. Be 6-10 with young players. Don’t be 6-10 with big name veterans. It is okay to turn the page to the younger players on the roster (Enunwa, Powell, Anderson, Lee, Jenkins, Williams) and whoever is added this year. Also don’t feel the need to chase JAY CUTLER or TONY ROMO because everybody knows who they are. 10. Be Cheap With Young Talent/Depth – Names like Ben Ijalana, Josh Martin, Wesley Johnson and Corey Lemonier aren’t household ones or even players who may be starters next year (outside of Johnson), that doesn’t mean there isn’t value to them providing depth. The Jets can bring all these guys back for cheap and should do it. 11. Maintain Status Quo On Special Teams – Nick Folk can probably be replaced by Ross Martin. Lachlan Edwards needs competition. Jalin Marshall cannot be your primary returner, especially on punts. Go find competition in the draft or free agency.

The primary Job of a NT is to clog the middle of the defense and keep the OGs off the inside lbers in a 34 defense . McLendon is more of a Penetrating DT than a run stuffing DT . #27TheDominator
Now we need to address TE in the draft and free agency? Get bent. I like Bostick. TE is like S, you try to fill it with a bargain from various places. Basketball players, blown up WRs, your extra tackle on blocking downs. For S, I look to converted CBs or QBs, Those are not places where I look to use high picks. Develop somebody you lazy ****s. Look at the best TEs in the game: Kelce and Graham were 3rds, Gronk a 2nd, Delanie Walker a 6th, Greg Olsen was like the last pick in the 1st, but Gates was an UDFA. As for McClendon, Tinster, I think Bowles runs a different D. He wants more penetration. I also think that Bowles is why Richardson is not playing as well. First of all, he is the most versatile, so Bowles is most likely to stick him out of position. Second, I just think the system is different. His sacks were down, but Richardson still was among NFL leaders in tackles for a loss.

kelly
The annual Hot 100 Free Agents list has been posted Posted by Zac Jackson on February 27, 2017, 2:00 PM EST Getty Images Before the spending begins, let the arguing begin. The annual PFT Hot 100 Free Agents list has been posted. We know most of the top players — starting with No. 1 Le’Veon Bell — won’t be allowed to come near the open market, but we still ranked them among players at all positions who stand to get paid, handsomely, sometime in the next couple of weeks. The list includes all sorts of players, young and old, who figure to make a bunch of money if they actually hit the open market next week. Because a lot can and will change between now and then and then certainly throughout March when the market actually opens, we’ll update the list as teams pass on contract options and roster bonuses and release other players to make way for their new and expensive acquisitions. The status of each player will be noted as he receives a tag, signs an offer sheet or signs a contract, and the ranking order can change as more players become free when the movement begins. It wouldn’t be a terrible idea to bookmark the list for reference or even for argument’s sake. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/02/27/the-annual-hot-100-free-agents-list-has-been-posted/
Tinstar
If this kid Pennell shows anything and can stay out of trouble, he will make Maclendon a cap casualty after the june 1st cuts when we can save 3+mil and have under 2 mil in dead money in a 2 year span .
