(Photo by Mike Ehrmann | Getty Images) PrintEmail By Connor Hughes | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Email the author | Follow on Twitter on December 31, 2016 at 7:00 AM, updated December 31, 2016 at 7:05 AM FLORHAM PARK -- For the last two years, the Jets haven't had a tight end. Well, at least not one who made any form of an impact. Where did it all go wrong for the Jets in 2016? They had guys who could block, maybe sneak out into the flat once or twice a game. But no difference makers or playmakers. No guys the opposition ever paid attention to. If it's up to Austin Seferian-Jenkins, that will change in 2017. "Absolutely," Seferian-Jenkins told NJ Advance Media this week. "I will be that guy. No doubt in my mind."As this year comes to a close, no one is happier to see the calendar change than the Jets' 6-6, 262-pound tight end. The last 12 months have been one controversy and obstacle after another for the 24-year-old. His season began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was thrown out of practice during training camp, then cut from the team a month later following a second arrest for a DUI. The Jets claimed him off the waiver wire, but injuries have kept him from making a difference on the field. In total, he has played nine of 16 games. He has 13 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown. Williams wants to be a leader in 2017 Leonard Williams plans on being more vocal next season. "It has been a challenging year," Seferian-Jenkins said. "Everything we've gone through as a team, what I personally experienced in Tampa, the losing season. I'm just thankful I get to come out here and play football." Off-field issues behind him, Seferian-Jenkins said his sole focus is how he can not only get on the field, but stay there. Which means, more than anything else, rounding out his game.In college at Washington, Seferian-Jenkins was seldom asked to stay in and run or pass block. He was arguably the team's most athletic player, so the coaches wanted him out running routes. He finished his collegiate career with 146 catches for 1,840 yards and 21 touchdowns in 37 games. With the Jets, though, Jenkins knows he needs to do more than just catch passes. Who's in and out vs. Bills? The Jets aren't exactly healthy heading into this weekend's game. "S---, yeah," Seferian-Jenkins said. "If I want to play, I have to block. It's really just about understanding that. I have a great positional coach in Jimmie Johnson. He definitely helps me in understanding the techniques. I never used to block. It takes time."In early December, coach Todd Bowles said Seferian-Jenkins had gotten "a lot better" at blocking. It's a big reason why he saw his playing time increase before suffering a hamstring injury, which will sideline him for this Sunday's season finale against the Bills. Seferian-Jenkins admitted he's nowhere close to where he wants to be as a blocker, but he's making progress. That's "the biggest thing," he says.Seferian-Jenkins said he'll take a few weeks off after the season to rehab and get his body right, then hit the weight room. He wants to report back for Jets' organized team activities in May in "the best shape of [his] life." He'll talk to the training staff about how he can get quicker and faster, too. The Jets told Seferian-Jenkins the tight end position is there for the taking. He wants to grab it."I'm going to stretch the field vertically, and I'm going to do everything in between," Seferian-Jenkins said. "I'm excited for the opportunity next year. I want to come back and be a force to be reckoned with." > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/12/austin_seferian-jenkins_confident_he_can_be_jets_p.html#incart_river_index Franchise Saved! kelly
Earth to Jets: Time to re-discover tight-end position 7:00 AM ET Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email print comment With free agency approaching (March 9), we're analyzing the biggest needs on the New York Jets' roster, examining possible upgrades: Position : Tight end 2017 cap hits of top returnees : Austin Seferian-Jenkins -- $1.1 million Eric Tomlinson -- $540,000 Braedon Bowman -- $540,000 Pending free agents: Brandon Bostick (RFA), Kellen Davis. Key stat: Everybody knows former offensive coordinator Chan Gailey rarely used tight ends in the passing game. These numbers prove it: During the last two seasons, the Jets were dead last in tight-end receptions (26), last in yards (268), last in touchdowns (one) and last in targets (54), per ESPN Stats & Information. Thirty-one teams utilized the tight end, and then there was the Jets. The closest team to them in tight-end receptions was the Cardinals with 97. Money matters: They have no financial restrictions. Not a single dollar is guaranteed, so they can cut everybody and start from scratch, if they choose. Big picture: New coordinator John Morton comes from an offense (Saints) that employed three wide receivers and one tight end as its base package. He also has roots in the West Coast system, which is tight end-friendly. Therefore, it's safe to assume he will place a high priority on finding a pass-catching tight end. Seferian-Jenkins, who had 10 catches in limited opportunities, has the ideal skill set, but he has consistency issues -- on and off the field. He's subject to a personal-conduct suspension stemming from a DUI arrest last fall. Free-agent market watch: Jared Cook, Martellus Bennett, Vernon Davis, Jermaine Gresham, Jack Doyle, Dion Sims, Anthony Fasano. Also could become available: Lance Kendricks. The game plan: Cook and Bennett are the best of the bunch, but they'll both turn 30 before training camp. The Jets should stay away from older vets unless they're willing to take a one-year contract. Cook and Bennett will undoubtedly have long-term offers from teams. Morton knows Davis from their days with the 49ers. He had a decent year for the Redskins (44 catches, 581 yards), but he's 33 years old. The Jets made a play for Gresham in 2015, but he has lost a step. Doyle (59 catches) won't stretch too many defenses, but he's good in the red zone (five touchdowns) and only 26. There are some quality tight ends in the draft; that might be the Jets' best bet. Somehow, they need to come out of the offseason with a starting-caliber player at this long-lost position. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/66913/earth-to-jets-time-to-re-discover-tight-end-position
#27TheDominator
Everybody likes to squawk about the Jets not having any tight ends, but they carried plenty. They just all sucked. Gailey didn't use a TE? That is good to know. Can somebody please explain to me why we carried so many on the ******* roster? They started the year with Bostick (converted small school WR that embarrassed himself on the Packers on sides kick) and Kellen Davis (an offense against humanity). They picked up Braedon Bowman off waivers, but he tore his ACL. Borderline practice squad type. They picked up ASJ off waivers after his DUI. They signed Tomlinson off the Texans practice squad and carried him on the active roster most of the year IIRC. That is four or five guys (at least three at a time) taking a roster space that supposedly isn't used, all while they supposedly use Enunwa at TE. They also have Jason Vander Laan who is a small school QB being converted. He is the NCAA QB rushing leader or something and was in camp last year and a practice squad guy. kelly
On Wednesday, the New York Jets lost more than 50 percent of their tight end production with the news that Austin Seferian-Jenkins will be suspended for the first two games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. OK, the numbers are a bit misleading. Though the percentage is accurate, we're not talking about a huge sample size. Seferian-Jenkins made 10 receptions last season, the rest of the tight ends accounted for eight, easily the lowest numbers in the league. Translation: Bleak turned bleaker with the suspension. As of today, the only tight ends under contract (and not suspended) are Eric Tomlinson, Braedon Bowman and Jason Vander Laan. Combined career catches: Zero. This wouldn't be a thing if Chan Gailey still were the offensive coordinator -- he didn't use tight ends in the passing game -- but the Jets will be switching to a West Coast-style offense under his replacement, John Morton. They've already said tight end will have a more prominent role than in the past. Even with Seferian-Jenkins, hardly a lock to make the team, the Jets need an infusion of talent. There's not much left in free agency, which leads us to the draft. Alabama's O.J. Howard is being hailed by talent evaluators as an elite talent, raising the question: Could the Jets take him with the sixth overall pick?ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay believes Howard is worthy of a high pick. In his latest mock draft, he has Howard going fourth to the Jacksonville Jaguars. That's what you call an outside-the-box prediction -- way outside the box. Consider: In the modern era (since 1970), only one tight end has been drafted in the top five -- Riley Odom, picked fifth in 1972 by the Denver Broncos. Since 1996, only three have cracked the top 10 -- Eric Ebron (10th in 2014), Vernon Davis (sixth in 2006), and Kellen Winslow (sixth in 2004). McShay, in a conference call Wednesday with reporters, acknowledged "it might be stretch" to have a tight end at No. 4, but he added: "Ultimately, when you look at this year’s class, I think from a character standpoint, the maturing that he went through, the ability to stretch the field vertically, the ability to create after the catch and then the improvement he’s undergone as a run blocker and even in pass protection at times, I think O.J. Howard is one of the most complete prospects." Howard was under-utilized at Alabama, finishing his career with 114 receptions for 1,726 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 15.1 yards per catch, which is outstanding for a tight end.So let me pose this question: If you thought you were getting the next Rob Gronkowski, would you take Howard at No. 6? Considering their multitude of other needs, it would be an absolute stunner if the Jets picked Howard that high. But it's a deep draft for tight ends, and they have to face reality: With or without Seferian-Jenkins, who has only one year left on his contract, the Jets need to add a young, athletic tight end to a pipeline that dried up years ago. > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/67549/could-the-tight-end-needy-jets-do-the-unthinkable-in-the-draft

kelly
Rich CiminiESPN Staff Writer The Jets have a visit scheduled Monday with free-agent TE Mychal Rivera, a source confirmed. Rivera is a former sixth-round pick who spent his first four seasons with the Raiders. He has 146 career receptions, 1,413 yards and 10 touchdowns. kelly
Mychal Rivera slated to meet with Jets Posted by Josh Alper on March 17, 2017, 2:16 PM EDT Getty Images The Jets learned this week that tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins will be suspended for the first two weeks of the 2017 season and they’ll reportedly kick off next week by visiting with another player at the position. Peter Schrager of FOX Sports reports that the Jets will have Mychal Rivera in for a visit on Monday.Rivera was a 2013 sixth-round pick by the Raiders and has played in 61 games for the team over the last four seasons. He set career highs with 58 catches and 534 receiving yards in 2014 and has caught 50 passes for 472 yards during the last two campaigns. The tight end hasn’t been a major part of the offense for the Jets since Todd Bowles took over as head coach before the 2015 season. Rivera’s addition might not change that, but a new offensive coordinator in John Morton could lead to more attention being paid to the position. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/17/mychal-rivera-slated-to-meet-with-jets/
