Does he know what competent coaches look like?

You could have a point here. If your HC has been paying any attention to his young QBs then maybe he should hire a OC that can compliment the QB's on the roster.

Without mentioning your boy's name directly (lol), any vet we sign is coming to a new system too.

This team, in case you hadn't noticed, was an embarrassment. They ALL deserve to be fired. The fact that Kacy Rodgers is still employed ANYWHERE, let alone the NY JETS is a travesty.

The most money went into the defense. It's inconceivable that Rodgers stays. It's actually inconceivable that Bowles stays. Both defensive minded with a terrible Defensive performance week after week. Bowles called the defensive plays most of the season.  Never gelled, never improved and actually regressed throughout the season. They made the announcement too soon to keep Bowles. Gailey coached a good offense. Fitz was the problem not Gailey. No long ball threat keeps the secondary tight and as I said in another post guys were open A LOT!!! Fitz just couldn't get the ball to them. Special teams sucked too. There will be some good HCs available by the end of the season. Another sad chapter in the Jets organization or should I say disorganization.

Pepper Johnson seemed like one of the better position coaches. Apparently, this purge has nothing to do with people doing a good job. This strikes me as 100% ridding the room of objective, or challenging, opinions to further insulate Bowles with yes-men as he fails miserably.

So, basically, it's Rex Ryan all over again.

Unless Johnson shot his way out of town with a promise from his rabbi, Bill Parcells, he could move on to better things rather than face the ax again with this impending debacle next January.

Interestingly enough, Wade Phillips was the head coach of the Bills back in the 90s. He was given an ultimatum to fire some coaches or be fired...he chose to be fired.

I feel like Gailey knew he was on the chopping block and opted to retire rather than accept a firing that would probably be his last. This way he can take a year off and come back somewhere else.

The only semi-head scratcher for me is the RB coach. Our problems at RB this year was not running Powell enough and trying to use Forte as a bulldozer. That's not as much an RB problem as an OC problem. I dunno, maybe he was cut for other reasons. The rest needed to go. Rogers too.

Maybe Shipp was one of the coaches that ripped Hack?

The ship is sinking.

No good OC will come here for a year.  #1 pick in 2018.

You may be right on offense, but there are some former head coaches like Pettine and Doug Marrone who had proven defensive success who may be available, why not them instead of Rodgers?  Why pick coordinators that have to cut their teeth here.

There's alot to choose from, why the Hell do we feel we need to go for Fillippo who's been with half a dozen teams and struck lightning in a bottle once with Carr in the Raiders organization.

It's Bowles' defense.  The position is only a figurehead position.  Besides, how are you going to convince someone good to come here when they know they're going to get fired after a year anyway?

Bowles is on thin ice.  He may not even make it through the season next year.

Doug Marrone is an offensive coach.  He is the offensive line coach/interim head coach with Jacksonville.  He used to be the offensive coordinator with New Orleans under Payton.

You're not going to convince anyone good to come here to work with Bowles...that's the damn problem, and why if you're gonna fire everyone nearly under him which is an act of desperation at least in appearance then you should fire Bowles also.  Just like when we tried this with Rex, what you're gonna get is Sparano/Mornigweg 2.0.  It is doomed to fail...and now you have young QB's going to be subjected to 3 OC's in 3 years etc.

Just do what is right and start again...screw what everyone thinks about that decision.  You'll get better people in here starting from scratch than you will asking them if they want to hitch their wagon to Todd Bowles.

Jeesh.

Agreed.  I think it's a fait accompli.  We'll have to tolerate another crappy season then hit the reset button again in 2018 with new coaches, etc.  Tired of this.

I don't know how many more of these dances the Jets have left.  No one is going to want to work for the Johnson brothers.

Lame duck OC leading two young QB's to oblivion?

It has little to do with the Johnson Brothers, and more to do with the situation you're bringing people into.

Given the chance to build something of their own, most will come.

Asking people to come here to hitch their wagon to a losing proposition though is not gonna work

Really feel as if Chan just fell on the sword.  If anything, the offensive play calling wasn't the reason for this terrible season, it was Fitzpatrick.  There were countless times where there were completely easy reads for easy passes, which were ignored into incomplete passes or interceptions.

I have no idea why anyone who even stepped in the defensive film room is back.  I'd fire everyone from the DC to the janitor that cleans their conference room.

http://turnonthejets.com/2017/01/new-york-jets-chan-gailey-gone-coaching-staff-shook-wrong-way/#more-35223

New York Jets Offensive Coordinator Chan Gailey “retired” today in conjunction with the firing of quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo, Defensive Line Coach Pepper Johnson, Defensive Backs Coach Joe Danna and Running Backs Coach Marcel Shipp. The headline news is Gailey and his apprentice Patullo being on the way out, while Defensive Coordinator Kacy Rodgers will return for his third year as the Jets Defensive Coordinator.

This collection of decisions stinks of a PR/face save move, rather than a proper audit of the Jets problems in 2016. Chan Gailey was not great in 2016 but was the least of this team’s problems and was coming off a terrific 2015 season, where he worked magic with Ryan Fitzpatrick. He has been Todd Bowles’ best hire by a substantial margin. There have been whispers about Gailey retiring but he didn’t sound ready to stop coaching as recently as last week and the Jets also fired Patullo, who Gailey specifically brought with him to the offensive staff, in many people’s mind as a prospective successor.

Gailey hasn’t been shy about expressing concern about the Jets decision to carry four quarterbacks and the grooming process for Christian Hackenberg. It is fair to wonder if internal disagreements about Hackenberg’s long term ability factored into this decision.

Gailey’s top two moves in New York were utilizing Quincy Enunwa in a hybrid H-Back/wide receiver role and supervising over his development from a practice squader to the team’s lead receiver and moving Eric Decker into the slot, where he thrived. He regressed last season as he struggled to properly use Bilal Powell, adjust to the absence of Decker and coach around Ryan Fitzpatrick’s general awfulness.

Potentially more concerning is the decision to keep Rodgers, who oversaw a horrid defensive performance in 2016 and sounds hopelessly out of touch when talking to the media. Rodgers is close with Bowles and this appears to be cronyism taking precedent over performance, a pattern than helped do in Rex Ryan here in New York. It is easy to make the 65 year old near retirement the scapegoat, it is less easy to hold your friend accountable for not doing his job.

The Jets would be wise to cast a wide net for their Offensive Coordinator search and not box it in to somebody who claims they can “fix” Hackenberg, who now has an even more uphill battle to succeeding with his OC and QB coach both leaving. Mike McCoy is a popular name being thrown around but he’ll have his choice for more appealing jobs and will be difficult to coax to New York with the current depth chart at quarterback.

The Jets making changes is a good thing. However, they may not have made the right changes today. Let’s hope when it comes to making player decisions, they properly audit their talent, unlike what they did with their coaching staff.

One of the 1st things I thought about when the season was over was getting rid of Chan Gailey, and elevating Kevin Patulla as the Offensive coordinator . The other thing that was an immediate thought was the firing of several assistants coaches on defense along with the defensive coordinator  .  When it was reported that Gailey was considering staying around as an advisor, I thought it was to assist the young Patulla in his 1st stint as OC, as a sounding board . After all, the young man has been an understudy to Gailey as a quality control coach, a WR coach and finally as a QBs coach . He came up under Gailey the right way, and his taking over had to be in Gailey's plans .

I can see why Todd Bowles might not want to trust his last stand as the Jets HC to a 1st time OC so I have no issue with this decision in that regard . Furthermore, with all the candidates available, why not try and go after someone who has done the Job before .

As far as the defense is concern, I knew Pepper Johnson was done here and I also believed that Joe Dana was done due to the way the secondary played this past season . the thing that I paused on after further consideration was firing the DC .  Now don't get me wrong, with the Performance of this defense this last season, the man in command of that unit needs to be held accountable . The problem is, who exactly was in command of that defense . Yes, Kacy Rodgers held the position of DC where supposedly he created the defensive game plans, ran the defensive practices and basically did what a DC does from Tuesday to Saturday . The problem as I see it, was on Sunday, Todd Bowles called the defensive signals .

Now consider this for a moment and maybe you might see where I paused .  Gailey ran the offensive practices and called the plays . He used his prote'ge'  Patulla on the sidelines to communicate with his QBs whenever the Jets came off the field . The offense didn't produced and the QBs are a problem for the Jets .   ON defense, Rodgers was a figurehead on the sidelines on Sundays and with the Defensive Line under  pepper Johnson(fired) and the Defensive backs under  Joe Dana (fired)  under producing, I could make a case for keeping Kacy Rodgers . It is reported that late in the year, Rodgers started to call the defense, but by then, the team was a mess .

Todd Bowles was not going to fire himself, and Kacy Rodgers has an excuse  and 2 fall guys who coached the best and highest paid players on the defense .  If it were me, I would fire Kacy Rodgers, but I can see why he would be kept on . The Jets are going to run Todd Bowles Defensive Scheme  regardless of who the coordinator is, and Kacy Rodgers knows it . He's the HC, and if that he wants to run, then he has the right to do it or he should not be the HC . Hiring another DC and forcing him to run Todd Bowles's defensive scheme would be a bigger mistake .  These 2 men are tied together and will go down together but this coming year, I hope it's with Kacy Rodgers calling the game day signals .

No more excuses .

End Sermon .

That is all .
