Jets have to re-sign Geno

Being a locker room leader and being a great player on the field are two different things.  Fitz was both a great leader and a great quarterback in 2015 when he set the Jets record for TD's in a single season and the combo of 14-15-87 was on fire.  In 2016 he was terrible on the field but took his medicine and his demotion with class and didn't make trouble for Petty or Hackenberg.

No one is making the case for Ryan Fitzpatrick to be a Jets starter.  No one.  But when it comes to how we handle the two kids and who we bring in here to be the veteran backup, Fitzpatrick is in the conversation.  We need a backup that 1) knows he's not ever going to start, 2) has shown he can mentor young guys, and 3) would be a good cultural fit for Petty and Hackenberg as they figure out the NFL.  Well, tell me who else is out there that hits these three marks, is already on our cap, and already has a relationship with Petty and Hack.  Exactly.

SAR I

Your Delusional. How can you be a great leader when you choke in a leave it all on the field game? How? sh*tz shortcomings as a leader and a player are exactly why this team choked on the field against the Bills in 2015 AND the reason why he was demoted as the starter this year.. His piss poor play got him demoted and your talking about his leadership ability. sh*tz is not on our cap anymore. He will be a FA, will have to learn a new offense, and if your smart you don't want this guy anywhere near a young impressionable QB unless its to show that QB what not to do. Its all moot anyway as sh*tz will not re-signed as He has practically come out and said this. His remarks about how the coaches and management didn't believe in him anymore support this. I would be surprised if sh*tz is even on an NFL team as back-up in 2017. That's how bad his performance was this past season. Anyone who thinks otherwise should probably re-think their position.

Yes he did at a post game press  conference with his poor pitiful me speech after throwing 6 picks in 1 game.... "I'm pissed off and I will just play pissed off, ya know when the coaches don't believe in me, the GM doesn't believe in me, the owner doesn't all I can do is believe in myself." Really Ryan? That was lower than anything Geno ever did to throw the whole front office under the bus for maybe losing confidence in a guy who just threw 6 picks in a single game. It was the worst I had ever see ANY NFL QB play in my life. Hack couldn't have played that terrible in that game.

Someone has to tell me why every conversation about Ryan Fitzpatrick has to be interjected with "but Geno Smith".  It's insulting.  Ryan Fitzpatrick actually accomplished something in New York.  Geno Smith hasn't played a single game in 2 years.

As far as what is "low", I don't recall Ryan Fitzpatrick posting up dick pics, pouting on the sidelines, refusing TV interviews, boycotting print media, or getting his face busted open by an angry teammate.  Geno's dead, folks.

The Jets aren't in a position to grab a top free agent QB prospect this offseason.  No one wants to come here.  No different than head coaching prospects, it's why Bowles was retained.

Once you understand that reality you start to understand who among the slim-pickings will be best suited to back up Petty and Hackenberg and that's why Fitzpatrick is in the conversation.  And if your opinion is that we have to cut bait with every Jet who played like ass this year, well, you'd better get a big bus because I can see about 40 players hitting the road you're prescribing, you don't have a team in your world.

And what are we talking about here?  The third string emergency clipboard holder?  Who really cares anyway.  Ryan Fitzpatrick may be the best candidate for the role of mentor/emergency QB in the NFL, that's not much of a debate.  If the guy lives here and doesn't want to move and will take the league minimum, sign him and move on to more important needs.

I don't agree, if I were an available QB I would love to come here.  Frst off I would virtually be guaranteed the starting job.  I would have good receivers : Decker and perhaps Marshall.  I would also have young and up and coming receivers: Robbie Anderson & Quincy Enunwa  I see no reason why we couldn't get a top FA QB if we desired.  Also any team looking to fill it's QB position via trade or FA didn't win either this season.  Perhaps the exception would be Denver, but they will land Romo.

Yes, the Jets QB situation is this bad. The team basically has no choice but to re-sign Geno Smith. Fitz sucks and is almost certain to be let go. I'm not that into college football, but even if DeShaun Watson falls to number six, the stats say that he's a turnover machine and wouldn't be ready on starting day. Speaking of turnover machines though, he would still probably be better than Fitz. Unless the Jets sign a big name free agent or swing a deal for, say, Mike Glennon, there's really no one left but Smith. Petty hasn't shown that he's a starter, and as we all know, Hackenburg probably still won't get playing time.

What other options do we have beyond that?

Yes let's sign a malcontent below average qb coming off an injury, great idea.

I want no part of Fitz here next year....I'd rather bring Sanchez back to sit on the bench. At least if he had to play he can throw further than 20 yDs downfield into a 5 mph breeze. And if Fitz is here, both Petty and Hack will be injured. Book it. Fitz would be starting by week 4.

If he is willing to play for a 1 yr deal at 2 million, ok maybe.. But that is it.. He was grossly overpaid this yr and worse made the offseason a complete circus distraction. 2 million take it or leave it, and don't give him more than 10 minutes to decide..

No.  If you came to New York you would be riding the bench with the clipboard as Petty comes out as the #1 and Hackenberg as the #2 next year.

Read between the lines.  We are retaining our questionable head coach.  Our owner has stated it's not a must-playoff year.  We have two young quarterbacks and next season is going to be about a youth movement all over the place, we're not the destination of a bonafide starting quarterback that other NFL teams would covet.

Yes, we're talking league minimum for a third-string emergency quarterback here.  We need someone to play the Mark Brunnell role.  Sanchez and Fitzpatrick are probably the two  best quarterbacks out there to do that right now.  Both are consummate team-guys, neither ruffled feathers when they were benched, both were supportive of the youngsters that supplanted them.

Geno Smith won't get a job in August, he'll be that quarterback waiting by the phone for the season-ending injury to a starter somewhere, whomever turns out to be next season's Teddy Bridgewater.

So, yeah, let's name a thread after him.

If we are to consider available ex-Jets quarterbacks as emergency/mentor guys it would be (in this order):

Ryan Fitzpatrick
Mark Sanchez
Greg McElroy
Brooks Bollinger
Ray Lucas
Dick Wood
Geno Smith

Fitzpatrick refused to sign a deal because he didn't see himself as a "mentor", when asked about the future he said he could care less, he made it clear he's all about himself and what benefits him. If they bring back Fitzpatrick he won't be here to be a backup he wants to start. He's made that very clear.

Look if Geno is healthy he should get a job. His price tag will be inexpensive and there is a need for Qbs in the NFL esp if they have experience. But he'll have to compete for a backup job against guys who might even come cheaper. And win a job. He got the backup job last year here but in exhibition games didn't play as well as Petty did. With all of the injuries a good chance that Geno will actually get on the field and play in 2017 somewhere. His new team won't accept excuses either he plays well or does not. Only a few fans here want to give him a pass on everything.

2016 Fitzpatrick signed the last deal the Jets gave him, he was negotiating as our starter, as a man who set the Jets record for TD's in a single season I'm not sure why you found that offensive.

2017 Fitzpatrick is nothing more than a backup, he's 35 years old, no one is going to offer him anything more than the clipboard role.  So we might as well inquire.  No reason not to take the guy who is already wearing green and lives here.

I think you misunderstand how the typical Jets fan feels about Ryan Fitzpatrick.  You do this because of your Geno Smith agenda.  There are no Ryan Fitzpatrick fans, he sold no jerseys, he had no talk shows.  He was signed as a backup and became the starter by accident, had a record-setting year, turned around the franchise for a moment, and was a no-brainer as our starter this year.  Jets fans don't hate Ryan Fitzpatrick.  If anything, we pity him the same way we pity ourselves.  If he signs as a backup here, there will be no outcry.  It's a smart business move.

We will have to disagree here.  I believe that Geno suffers from the double-whammy that affects a ton of 4th and 5th year guys and forces their unceremonious exit from the league:

He's done nothing on the field and he's been a baby off the field.  There are plenty of 28 year old quarterbacks with similarly bland on-field resumes but with none of the disastrous off-field baggage.

Since neither will survive another season like this, Mac & Bowles aren't betting their job security on Petty or Heckenberg.  No owner worth their salt would ever publicly say playoffs or bust, but if this team goes 5-11 with little or no improvement there will be changes.  Our starting QB is not yet on this team.

Disagree.  Our owner conceded that we are in a rebuild and that means the pressure on Maccagnan and Bowles isn't about wins and losses, it's about players showing talent and playing hard for a few years.

I'm not sure how old you are, but there are fans born in 1986 who only know the Jets as a perennial playoff contender, as a team that only needs a head coaching change or a quarterback change to get back to seriously competing for a wildcard because that's what we did from 1997 to 2012, a decent run of 15 years where the core of the team was good enough to allow minor changes to have major impacts.  Well, the Jets are now what we were from 1987 to 1996, a 10 year dark period where we were wandering aimlessly with no talent and no direction.  And in that no-man's land there are no starting QB's worth anything that we could either afford or would want to be here.

As far as age, let me put it this way, I remember Super Bowl III. LOL!   I would agree with you if Petty or Hackenberg were true "can't miss" prospects.  While I do not believe that Mac has given up on Hackenberg it is obvious he is a long term "project." Gone are the days when a regime has 5 year to build a team ala Walt Michaels.  In this day and age of social media and PSLs fans and owners are not patient regardless of public redoric.  The Jets cannot go 5-11 as they did this year with Mac/Bowles surviving.  Bowles may be a "questionable" HC, but he isn't stupid and neither is Mac, they will bring in a vet QB who has the ability to start and instantly improve this team, IMHO.

Your a funny guy. Naive but funny. I say your Naive because Money makes the world go 'round bro. The Jets will have a ton of cap space if they cut the deadwood. There are QB's who will take that money. Not necessarily the one I want but there are guys who will take the money no matter who its from. Hell the Jets take your money don't they?

The reality is sh*tz will not re-sign with this team. He has said it himself. There was an article in either the Post or News that even quoted him saying this before the season finale. My opinion is simply that sh*tz will not re-sign. My opinion is simply that the Jets are going to do what the Jets are going to do. There is no way to predict what they will do because you cannot predict stupid. Based on your posts you have a lot of experience with this.

Doesn't matter. Look at the guys starting games in the playoffs. They have no experience and look it. He can play at least as bad as them. There will be jobs. To me Fitz should have more value than Geno. Because like a lot of his career he has been elevated to starting games due to injuries. Three times he's won a starting job and played very well. If I'm a team looking for a vet backup who can start I'd sign him. He might play well after a wakeup call in 2016. But if I'm a coaching staff I do not give Fitz full reins. Because he has Sanchezian tendencies for self destruction.

That's not simplifying anything, that's just more of your misinformation.

You are quoting Ryan Fitzpatrick a year ago when he was publicly posturing for a starting job coming off of a very successful 2015 season.  Show me the quote from the past two weeks where Ryan Fitzpatrick is demanding a starting NFL job or thinks he's even worthy of it.

This is what Ryan said in his conference before the Bills game:

“I don’t think any of us expected this, I don’t know outside looking in what people expected, but it’s tough. The way that it’s gone, and for me, especially my playing and things I could’ve done better, that’s what makes this so hard.”

“I still enjoy playing, I still like being out there and competing. My boys are getting old enough now, where it’s kind of cool and fun for them to come to the games. I think as long as I still enjoy doing it, then I’ll keep doing it.”

And this is what Ryan said after his last game with the Jets:

“It was a season I came in with high expectations, I didn’t meet my own expectations or anyone else’s, probably. But mine are probably higher than everybody else’s. So there’s some disappointment there. But that’s just the way it went.”

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with what goes on here, with what goes on in my career, I don’t want to speculate about it.”

Wow.  Such a demanding guy.  Do everyone a favor and stick to facts not your recollection of what the guy said during a contract dispute last year.
