Saul Goodman
For two consecutive seasons with John Morton coaching wide receivers, Saints quarterback Drew Brees helped engineer the NFL’s No. 1 passing offense. Now Morton finds himself the Jets’ new offensive coordinator. “He’s been around some great coaches and some great play callers,” Brees told WFAN’s Boomer and Carton. “He’s been with a lot of teams with head coaches that know how to win, know how to lead, and are great play callers.” Brees tried to describe what kind of offense Morton would implement with the Jets. “He knows the origins of the West Coast offense and he stays true to that but he’ll also evolve,” Brees said. “It’s his time. The one thing I appreciated about [Morton] each and every week, is he always had a ton of knowledge and insight into the West Coast offense.” It would mark a difference of sorts from the system Jets’ quarterbacks have run in the two seasons Chan Gailey was with the organization. The most pronounced change should come, Brees says, in the terminology used. "It depends on the style of the West Coast offense. Everyone has their own spin,” Brees said. “It is definitely an adjustment and the verbiage can get pretty lengthy but there are ways that you can simplify that.” Before Morton implements a system, he’ll have to decide who will run it. joegreen
What does anyone think of Mike Sherman as QB coach? He's done some good things in Miami and GB. He could coach up some of the younger QBs.

Based on titles he hasn't been a QB coach..He's been HC, OC, OL, TE coach...Now HC for a H.S. in MA...Looks like Darrell Bevell was QB coach when Sherman was GB HC Doesn't really do much for me..I'd rather get a coach w/QB focused experience i.e. played/coached
joegreen
good point, but with Morton inexperienced, it may be useful to have a previous OC on staff. Maybe SHerman would be good with the OL and TE?

Morton apparently adopted Gruden's famously maniacal work ethic. In his coaching days, Gruden was known for setting his alarm at 3:17 a.m. every day. Morton followed similar sleep patterns the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints, according to coach Sean Payton. "I tell you, you're going to get this 4 a.m., 5 a.m., midnight-type grinder," Payton said of his former receivers coach, who was hired five days ago by the Jets. Call him a chip off the 'ol Chuckie. Payton, who appeared Friday on ESPN New York radio's "Hahn & Humpty" show from Super Bowl LI, said Morton routinely took advantage of the Saints' "sleep room," as he called it. Payton said they have an air-conditioned room with 10 beds, allowing workaholic coaches to sleep at the team's facility. "Johnny was one of those guys who would be in there," Payton said. "He'll have his little CPAP machine going, keeping everyone else awake." Turning serious, Payton said of Morton, "He's a tremendous football coach. I think it's a great hire. I hate losing him." Payton said Morton has "some strong beliefs. He's a great communicator, a great teacher." As we mentioned the day he was hired, Morton likely will run a version of the West Coast offense. Two of his coaching mentors, Gruden and Jim Harbaugh, employed a West Coast system.

He knows how to coach a rookie QB and run an offense. I think the West Coast offense is better than GAily's offense. He's older so he won't be angling for another HC job, and can focus on just being an OC. He may be willing to work for a cheaper contract since he is not in demand. There is one not so strong connection to Jeremy Bates. They shared play calling duties at USC for one year. When Pete Carroll was hired by Seattle, Bates left with him to become the OC. After one year, Bates left due to philosophical differences. Went on to work for the Bears as their QB coach. Was supposedly instrumental in Cutler's development when Bates and Cutler were together in Denver. Bates was not retained when Trestman was hired. Most recently, Bates was coaching QBs at Shanahan's QB camp in L.A. Albert Breer @AlbertBreer Per sources, the Jets are targeting ex-Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates to be their new quarterbacks coach. Bates comes highly recommended by Jon Gruden and Mike Shanahan, and worked with new Jets OC John Morton under Pete Carroll at USC. Ian Rapoport @RapSheet 9m9 minutes ago Had him in mind before locking up John Morton. Was last a QB coach in 2012 Great call, nyjbuddy!

Only fear is his work with upcoming free agents: Jay Cutler and Matt Barkley. He is truly a good QB coach that has spent his non-NFL time developing QBs. Would be good for Petty and Hackenberg. Also wish they could have waited until the end of summer and just have Petty and Hackenbreg train with him out in Los Angeles. Would have given some them time to work on somethings until he officially came onto the staff.

C Mart
New Jets OC John Morton gets Sean Payton’s seal of approval March 29, 2017 3:33 PM PHOENIX — Jets fans may not know much about new offensive coordinator John Morton, but Saints coach Sean Payton couldn’t stop singing his praises. “ ‘Johnny Mo,’ he’s very prepared. You’re going to be impressed with him,” Payton said Wednesday of his former assistant during the NFL owners meeting. “He’s not going to be a media darling. But he’s talented, he’s going to work his tail off. We had 2-, 3-in-the-morning nights during the year. That’s just how it is. But he’s a fantastic teacher, he knows the offense. He’s also going to make sure he’s going to look closely at the personnel. And we talk all the time about making sure the offense is built around the ingredient and it’s not the other way. And I think he’ll do a good job of assessing with the staff, ‘Hey, here are our strengths and let’s play to them.’ ” That’s good news for Jets fans, considering how predictable and unimaginative at times the offense was under former coordinator Chan Gailey. But Morton, who twice was hired by Payton since 2006 and spent the past two seasons as the Saints’ wide receivers coach, is more than capable of improving the Jets’ underachieving offense, Payton said. And the longtime head coach is excited to see his former pupil become a first-time play-caller. “You want to see guys have success on your staff and go on,” he said of the 47-year-old Morton, who rejoined the Saints in 2015 after serving as their offensive assistant and passing game coach in 2006. “ . . . It’s his first opportunity and I think he’ll do a real good job. I said this to him, there’s no better city than New York to go have success as a play-caller. You go in there and make an impression. “That happened to me in 1999, first time having a chance to call plays right in the middle of the season,” added Payton, a former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator for the Giants. “I was young. Those are good memories and good opportunities.” Morton will certainly have a lot of long nights trying to assess the Jets’ current roster, which at the moment doesn’t have a starting quarterback. The team signed veteran Josh McCown last week, but he’ll be expected to compete with the inexperienced Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. Coach Todd Bowles will ultimately decide which of the three will be their Week 1 starter, but it will be up to Morton to put whichever player in the best situation to be successful. “Listen, he’s been around [Jon] Gruden, [Jim] Harbaugh, myself. He’s very meticulous. I think he’s going to be outstanding,” Payton said, adding that Morton was one of three Saints assistants who presented plays to Payton each week. “I think most importantly, it’s going to be, ‘Hey, who’s playing quarterback. has that been solved?’ But I think [the media] will be impressed. I think he’s a tremendous football coach, I do. And I know this: There’s not any lack of passion. He’ll be there till whatever hour it takes. He’ll spend a lot of hours there, I’m sure.” Perhaps, the Jets may have to copy Payton and build a sleep room for coaches that the Saints equipped with air conditioning and eight bunk beds. Said Payton, smiling: “It’s a little Google-like. It’s pretty cool.” http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/new-jets-oc-john-morton-gets-sean-payton-s-seal-of-approval-1.13334342
